Taxonomy & naming
Hoplisoma osvaldoi was described in 2024 by Felipe Alonso and co-authors in a study presenting the first combined molecular-and-morphological phylogeny of the Corydoradinae focused on the north-western La Plata fauna. Unlike most corys in the hobby, it was never described in the omnibus genus Corydoras: it was named from the outset in Hoplisoma Swainson, 1838 — the short-snouted lineage (centred on the type species Corydoras punctatus, lineage 9 in the older scheme) that the 2024 revisions resurrected from within the old Corydoras. Its valid combination is therefore Hoplisoma osvaldoi, and there is no 'Corydoras osvaldoi' in current taxonomy; the epithet has at times been seen with the genus name in quotation marks ('Hoplisoma' osvaldoi) because that same study found Hoplisoma to be non-monophyletic and flagged the 'Hoplisoma' paleatum clade, to which this species belongs, as needing further work.
We file the species in our cory atlas under the familiar 'Corydoras' umbrella for findability, but the honest current name is Hoplisoma osvaldoi. The describing study, in the same body of work, also erected a new genus, Urkumayu, for three other north-western La Plata species (formerly Hoplisoma gladysae, H. micracanthum and H. petracinii); osvaldoi was not placed there but kept in the 'Hoplisoma' paleatum clade, as sister to H. paleatum. The epithet honours Jorge Osvaldo Fernández Santos, an Argentine aquarist and fish collector who donated many specimens to scientific collections and championed the country's native fishes.
Morphology
This is a small cory: males reach about 1.8 in and females about 2 in in total length. The body is the typical short-snouted Corydoras-type form — deep and flat-bellied with an arched back, a blunt downturned snout and three pairs of barbels — armoured by two rows of overlapping bony scutes that meet along the dorsal ridge, the head a hard helmet of bone. As in all members of the group, the dorsal and pectoral fins each begin in a stiff spine.
The colour pattern is the species' most striking feature, not for its boldness but for its resemblance to a neighbour: it closely matches the syntopic Hoplisoma micracanthum, with which it shares its habitat, in what the describers interpret as a putative case of Müllerian co-mimicry — two similarly defended species converging on a shared warning appearance. The fish is otherwise identified by a combination of meristic and osteological characters set out in the original description rather than by any single obvious mark.
Habitat
Hoplisoma osvaldoi is endemic to the upper basin of the Bermejo River, part of the La Plata system, in Salta Province, north-western Argentina — known from the Blanco River and associated waters around El Oculto in the Orán department. This is the Andean foothill margin of the La Plata basin, well to the south and west of the lowland Amazon, and the fish there live in cooler, clearer, faster-flowing piedmont streams than most lowland corys.
Water temperatures in this setting are relatively cool for a cory, on the order of 70–77 °F, with a roughly neutral to mildly acidic chemistry (about pH 6.0–7.2). As a callichthyid it retains the family's capacity for facultative air-breathing, gulping atmospheric air at the surface and absorbing oxygen through a vascularised hindgut, though its clear, well-oxygenated streams make less demand on that ability than the stagnant pools some relatives endure.
Feeding
Like other members of its genus, Hoplisoma osvaldoi is a benthic omnivore and detritivore that forages over the bottom, sifting sand and fine substrate with its snout and barbels to take small invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms and organic detritus. In aquaria it readily accepts a mixed and varied diet — granular and tablet foods, frozen bloodworm and good-quality flake — and, as a busy substrate-sifter, does best where the bottom is kept clean and food reaches it on the floor of the tank.
Mating
No detailed reproductive account has yet been published for this newly described species, but as a short-snouted Hoplisoma it can be expected to share the egg-laying, shoaling habits and the 'T-position' courtship characteristic of the whole subfamily: a male aligns at right angles to a receptive female, milt is released and is thought to pass rapidly to the female's pelvic-fin basket, where a few eggs are fertilised before she carries and presses them onto a cleaned surface, repeating the cycle a few eggs at a time, with no pair bond formed.
Breeding
There is as yet no captive-breeding report for Hoplisoma osvaldoi, which has only recently entered scientific and hobby awareness. By analogy with related short-snouted corys, spawning would be expected to follow the standard pattern — a conditioned group, more males than females, brought into spawning by a cool, large water change with increased oxygenation that mimics seasonal rains; adhesive eggs laid in small batches on firm surfaces, with no parental care and a real risk of the adults eating the eggs, so a breeder would remove eggs or parents. Given its cool-stream origin, this species is likely to want lower temperatures than lowland tropical corys for successful conditioning and spawning.
In the aquarium
Hoplisoma osvaldoi is not (yet) an established aquarium fish, but its care can be inferred from its biology and from its short-snouted relatives. It is a shoaling species and should be kept in a group of at least six, with which it is far more settled and active; small to medium peaceful tankmates such as tetras, rasboras and danios suit it, or a single-species tank for breeding.
The two non-negotiables are substrate and temperature. Provide soft, fine sand or very smooth rounded gravel — never sharp gravel, which abrades and infects the barbels of a sifting cory — and keep the bottom clean. Crucially, this is a cool-stream fish: it will do better at the lower end of the cory temperature range and should not be kept tropical-warm, with well-oxygenated, gently flowing, clean water that echoes its clear Andean-foothill streams. It is peaceful and undemanding in temperament; as with all corys, handle it gently, since the fin spines snag in nets and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin dangerous in the small volume of a transport bag.
Conservation
Hoplisoma osvaldoi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — unsurprisingly, given that it was only described in 2024 — so it carries no formal conservation status. What is known gives some cause for attention: it is a narrow-range endemic, confined to the upper Bermejo basin in north-western Argentina, and small-range species in piedmont streams can be disproportionately vulnerable to local pressures such as water extraction, agriculture, deforestation and sedimentation. None of that amounts to a documented threat, but a single-basin endemic warrants monitoring, and a formal assessment would be needed to judge its status. Its existence also underscores how much corydoradine diversity at the southern margin of the group's range remains newly discovered and poorly understood.
