Taxonomy & naming
Panaque schaeferi was formally described by Nathan K. Lujan, Mónica Hidalgo, and Donald J. Stewart in 2010 in Copeia (volume 2010, number 4, pages 676–704), as part of a comprehensive revision of the subgenus Panaque (Panaque). The type locality is the Aguaytía River drainage, Santa Ana River, Cordillera Nacional Park, Ucayali Department, Peru (8°29′51″S, 75°33′36″W), at an elevation of 820 ft. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists Panaque schaeferi Lujan, Hidalgo & Stewart, 2010 as a valid species; the name is not a combination transferred from a prior genus, so the authority is non-parenthetical.
The revision recognised that the specimens circulating under the pre-description hobby codes L203 (the DATZ magazine designation) and LDA065 ('Das Aquarium' code) represent a single, diagnostically distinct species separable from the royal panaque P. nigrolineatus by characters including a larger adult size, differences in the pattern and extent of pale markings on juveniles and subadults, and molecular divergence. Hobbyists had already associated the name 'Titanic Pleco' and 'Volkswagen Pleco' with the fish's exceptional bulk before the formal description appeared.
Within Loricariidae, Panaque schaeferi sits in tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). The genus Panaque is characterised among loricariids by its uniquely spatulate (spoon-shaped) teeth — broadened at the tips relative to the base — which enable the genus to rasp and ingest large volumes of wood fibre, a dietary specialisation found nowhere else in the family to the same degree.
Morphology
Adults of Panaque schaeferi reach 23.5 in standard length (SL) — PlanetCatfish records this as the published maximum, and field collectors working the upper Ucayali drainage have documented individuals exceeding 17.5 in SL in the wild. Total length at maximum size may approach 27.5–29.5 in. Body weight in large adults is substantial; the common name 'Volkswagen Pleco' is an aquarist's comment on the fish's shape and bulk as much as its length.
The body form follows the standard Panaque plan: strongly dorsoventrally flattened, armoured in overlapping odontode-bearing scutes arranged in longitudinal rows, with a broad, flat head bearing a pronounced ventral sucker-mouth. The dorsal fin is tall, with a stout first ray, and the pectoral fins are large and paddle-like. Ground colour in most individuals is dark grey to olive-brown with paler vermiculations or irregular mottling, though the expression of patterning varies with age — juveniles tend to show a bolder pattern of pale spots or streaks that fades or transforms as the fish matures toward uniform dark coloration.
The diagnostic character shared by all Panaque species — the wide, spatulate teeth — is most easily observed in the opened mouth of an anaesthetised or deceased specimen, where the distinctive widening at the tooth tip is unmistakable compared to the uniform-width teeth of other loricariids. Sexual dimorphism in this species is not strongly marked; males tend to develop more elaborate interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and may show heavier odontode growth on the leading pectoral-fin rays. Gravid females are broader through the abdomen.
Habitat
Panaque schaeferi is known from main-channel habitats in the upper Amazon (Solimões) and its principal Peruvian and Brazilian tributaries, including the Ucayali, Marañón, and Purus systems. The type locality in the Aguaytía drainage places it in a highland Peruvian Andean foothill river at 820 ft elevation — a whitewater system fed by Andean glacial melt and seasonal rainfall, characterised by elevated sediment loads, relatively high conductivity, and neutral to slightly alkaline pH compared to Amazonian blackwater tributaries.
Microhabitat is overwhelmingly associated with major driftwood accumulations — large log-jams, root masses, and submerged tree trunks wedged across the river channel or piled on bars and bends. These structures constitute both feeding substrate and refuge for the fish. In main-channel Amazonian rivers these wood tangles can be enormous, persisting for decades as large hardwood trunks resist decay. The species is adapted to moderate to strong current and well-oxygenated water characteristic of fast-flowing Andean whitewater rivers.
Temperature in the upper Ucayali and Aguaytía drainages is warm year-round by Amazonian standards, with PlanetCatfish recording a range of 72–77 °F for the species. The seasonal flood pulse of the Amazon brings significant variation in water level, temperature, and chemistry, and P. schaeferi is presumed to track or exploit these cycles as other large Amazonian plecos are known to do.
Feeding
Panaque schaeferi is a confirmed xylophage — a wood-eater — and the spatulate teeth of the genus are its most critical morphological adaptation. The fish gouges wood from submerged trunks and branches using a scraping action of the premaxillary and dentary teeth, ingesting large volumes of wood fibre along with the biofilm (bacteria, fungi, algae, and detritus) colonising the wood surface. Research on Panaque nigrolineatus (reviewed by Donovan et al., 2019) has established that a substantial portion of the energy budget of large Panaque comes from volatile fatty acids produced by hindgut fermentation of hemicellulose fractions in wood, mediated by a rich community of anaerobic gut bacteria.
In the aquarium, the single non-negotiable provision is ample high-quality driftwood in large pieces. Soft, partly waterlogged wood is preferred over very dense hardwood for a fish this size; Malaysian driftwood, mopani, and bogwood are commonly offered. Because P. schaeferi is large and produces substantial waste from wood processing, biological filtration must be sized generously. Supplementary foods should be vegetable-based: algae wafers, sinking spirulina discs, blanched sweet potato, yam, courgette, and peas are all appropriate. Protein-rich foods should be offered sparingly — a diet heavy in animal protein is harmful to these wood-gut specialists and promotes fatty liver and associated organ pathology.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in P. schaeferi has not been documented in the scientific literature, and captive breeding reports are absent from PlanetCatfish's database, reflecting the practical reality that a 23.5 in loricariid requires an enormous aquarium and is rarely kept in numbers or conditions that promote spawning. What is known is inferred from the biology of closely related species within Panaque.
Like other large Panaque, males are territorial and exhibit strong site-fidelity around preferred cavities or crevices in driftwood. The interopercular odontodes of adult males are larger and more elaborate than those of females, serving both as weapons in male–male contests and as tactile stimuli during courtship. Males will excavate or enlarge cavities in wood using their teeth — a behaviour documented in Panaque nigrolineatus — creating spawning chambers inside large driftwood logs. Rivalry between males at large log-jam sites in the wild can produce visible scarring from odontode abrasion.
Given the species' size and the limited number of specimens maintained in specialist collections, systematic field observations of wild courtship are not available. The reproductive season is thought to track the Amazon's wet–dry cycle, with spawning timed to rising water levels when food availability and habitat structure peak, as is common in Amazonian suckermouth catfishes.
Breeding
No confirmed captive breeding of Panaque schaeferi has been published. The species appears in PlanetCatfish keeper records (29 registered keepers as of 2025) but with zero breeding reports — an outcome consistent with the extreme difficulty of providing appropriate conditions for a 23.5 in catfish. At the scale of captive breeding, the challenges are straightforward but substantial: the aquarium must accommodate multiple large adults, provide extensive high-quality driftwood, sustain extremely high biological filtration capacity, and maintain the temperature, pH, and oxygenation conditions of upper Amazonian whitewater.
Captive breeding of the related Panaque nigrolineatus is also extremely rare, so the broader genus represents one of the gaps in loricariid aquarium husbandry. Cave-spawning with paternal egg care is the expected reproductive mode given genus-level biology: the male would select a wood-cavity spawning site, the female deposit eggs on the interior walls, and the male fan and guard the clutch through incubation. Clutch size in large Panaque would be expected to exceed 100 eggs given body size, but empirical data are absent.
Public aquaria maintaining large loricariids have occasionally documented spawning events in large display tanks, but specific records for P. schaeferi remain unpublished. Conservation aquaculture interest in the species is limited given its Least Concern status, but the hobby breeding gap is notable.
In the aquarium
Panaque schaeferi is a fish for the highly committed specialist. A single adult requires a tank of at least 130 US gal with a 200 × 27.5 in footprint; larger is always better. Growth is relatively fast in warm, well-fed conditions — PlanetCatfish photo series document a captive individual exceeding 12 in TL at two years and 15.5 in TL at four years — so purchasers should plan for the adult's eventual scale before acquiring juveniles, which enter the trade at 4–6 in.
The aquascape must be built around substantial driftwood. Several large pieces — ideally including at least one section hollow enough to serve as a potential shelter — should be provided. Current should be moderate; a good turnover rate (four to six times hourly) with a sump or large canister filter is required to handle the heavy waste output from wood processing. Temperature 72–77 °F, pH 6.5–7.6, and soft to moderately hard water (up to about 15 °dH) are appropriate, reflecting the whitewater Andean tributary origin.
Because of the species' size and feeding habits, it is incompatible with the majority of community fish — it will uproot plants, displace décor, and physically overwhelm small tankmates with its bulk and foraging activity. Suitable companions are robust large cichlids (e.g., oscars, large geophagines) or other large South American catfishes that can hold their own. Two or more males should not be housed together in any tank below ~1,0.5 US gal due to territorial aggression.
Water quality management is the dominant husbandry challenge: wood-eating Panaque produce prodigious quantities of wood-fibre waste, and ammonia and nitrite spikes from inadequate filtration or infrequent maintenance will rapidly stress or kill them. Regular large water changes (25–40 % weekly) are essential.
Conservation
Panaque schaeferi is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN (assessed November 2020), based on a relatively wide distribution across the upper Amazon basin of Brazil and Peru and the absence of documented population-level declines. The species is collected for the ornamental trade at low levels — its size makes it expensive to transport and difficult to maintain, limiting commercial demand compared with smaller loricariids.
The ecological setting is not without threat: the upper Amazon and its Peruvian Andean tributaries (including the Ucayali) experience ongoing deforestation and forest fragmentation across the watershed, with consequences for river sedimentation and, critically, the supply of large-diameter wood input to the river channel. Large woody debris dynamics are fundamental to the ecology of wood-dependent Panaque species: reductions in natural log inputs from riparian deforestation can diminish the microhabitat and food supply these fish depend on over decadal timescales, even without direct impacts on the fish themselves.
Hydroelectric development on Andean rivers in Peru also poses a potential long-term threat to this and related species by altering flow regimes, blocking seasonal migrations, and inundating rapids and wood-accumulation zones with still-water reservoirs unsuitable for rheophilic species. At present, P. schaeferi is not considered at risk, but ongoing land-use change across western Amazonia warrants continued monitoring.
