Compact, heavily armoured, and bristling with enlarged odontodes on its pectoral spines and snout, Pseudolithoxus dumus is a dramatic little flyer-type pleco from the blackwater and clearwater tributaries of the upper Orinoco and Negro — a fish whose bold spot-and-bar pattern and pronounced sexual dimorphism have made it one of the more sought-after Orinoco rarities for specialist keepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Jonathan Armbruster and Francisco Provenzano formally described this species in 2000 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 11, number 3, pp. 241–254), originally placing it in the genus Lasiancistrus as Lasiancistrus dumus. The type locality is given as the Río Orinoco, in a backwater behind a sand playa approximately 0.5 hours upstream from Isla Temblador, 3°04'N, 66°28'W, Amazonas State, Venezuela. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Pseudolithoxus, which Armbruster erected to accommodate a group of flattened, heavily odontoded Orinoco loricariids that did not comfortably fit within Lasiancistrus; the parenthesised authority notation reflects this change of genus placement. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pseudolithoxus dumus (Armbruster & Provenzano, 2000); the former name Lasiancistrus dumus is listed as a synonym.

The genus Pseudolithoxus (Greek: pseudes = false, lithos = stone, oxys = sharp) currently comprises a small clade of heavily built, flattened plecos from the Orinoco and adjacent Negro drainages, allied within tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster 2004). P. dumus is notable among its genus as the species possessing the most well-developed odontodes on the pectoral spine and snout — a characteristic that directly informs the species name. The aquarium trade code L244, assigned by DATZ magazine, applies to this species and is widely used in hobbyist literature.

Morphology

Pseudolithoxus dumus reaches approximately 4 in standard length (SL) — a small to medium pleco, compact and robustly built. The body is strongly depressed (flattened dorso-ventrally), with a broad, rounded head and a thick, muscular trunk narrowing to a relatively narrow caudal peduncle. This flattened body plan, shared with several genera in the Orinoco rapids ichthyofauna, is an adaptation for life in high-flow rocky microhabitats.

Coloration is distinctive and variable: the ground colour is pale (cream to light grey), overlaid with large black spots at least anteriorly on the body; posteriorly, these spots may merge to form irregular transverse bars or partial bands. The tips of the dorsal and caudal spines carry contrasting light orange to cream-coloured spots. FishBase records the following meristics from Armbruster & Provenzano (2000): lateral line plates 24–25; dorsal plates 6–9; interdorsal plates 6–7; adipose-caudal plates 6–7; folded dorsal-fin plates 11–14; postanal plates 11–13.

The defining morphological feature of P. dumus, and the source of both its species name (Latin dumus = thorny thicket) and its colloquial 'flyer pleco' nickname, is the exceptional development of odontodes — stiff, spine-like protuberances — on the pectoral fin spine and along the snout. Breeding males develop even more elaborate odontodes, giving the snout a strikingly bristled appearance. This degree of odontode development is unusual even within the heavily armoured genus Pseudolithoxus. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced and clear: males have a broader and more angular head profile, a visibly bristled snout, and a longer, broader pelvic fin with a modified genital papilla; females have a rounder head, fewer and shorter snout odontodes, a regular pelvic fin, and a swollen, rounder papilla when gravid.

Habitat

Pseudolithoxus dumus is known from the upper Orinoco, upper Río Negro, and the Casiquiare canal drainage in Amazonas State, Venezuela — a region straddling the Orinoco-Amazon watershed at approximately 3–4°N. FishBase and PlanetCatfish both confirm distribution in the upper Orinoco and upper Negro/Casiquiare systems, and the type locality (Río Orinoco near Isla Temblador, ~3°04'N, 66°28'W) is in the deep upper Orinoco reach south of Puerto Ayacucho.

The rivers of this region include both white-water (Orinoco main channel) and blackwater/clearwater systems (Casiquiare, Negro tributaries). The PlanetCatfish entry does not specify temperature, but field conditions in the upper Orinoco and adjacent Negro system are typically 73–81 °F, with the blackwater tributaries (Casiquiare, upper Negro) showing strongly acidic conditions — pH as low as 4.5–5.5, conductivity below 20 µS/cm — while the main Orinoco carries slightly less acid, more nutrient-rich white water.

Microhabitat is rocky and high-flow: the flat body of Pseudolithoxus is well adapted to clinging to exposed bedrock faces and boulder tops in areas of turbulent water, much like the related genus Lithoxus (stone fish). The enlarged pectoral-spine odontodes likely provide enhanced grip on rock surfaces in swift current. The fish is cryptic when resting against a dark-spotted rock surface.

Feeding

Pseudolithoxus dumus feeds by scraping periphyton — the epilithic biofilm of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated microorganisms — from exposed rock surfaces using its subterminal suckermouth. The tooth morphology and body form are consistent with a specialist aufwuchs grazer rather than a wood-eater or large-particle omnivore. In the oligotrophic, often highly acidic blackwater rivers where it occurs, periphytic biofilm can be sparse, so the fish may require significant grazing territory.

There are no published dietary studies specific to P. dumus. By analogy with other Orinoco rock-face grazers (related genera Lithoxus, Pseudolithoxus anthrax), the diet is predominantly algal and diatom-based, supplemented by fine organic detritus and invertebrate larvae trapped within the biofilm matrix. The enlarged odontodes on the pectoral spine and snout are defensive and grip-related rather than feeding adaptations; tooth morphology is typical of aufwuchs scrapers.

In the aquarium, a diet of high-quality algae wafers, spirulina tablets, and blanched courgette or cucumber is appropriate. Smooth rocks with an established biofilm coating provide both behavioural enrichment and a continuous low-level food source. Protein supplementation (frozen bloodworm, Daphnia) is likely beneficial in moderation given the very soft, nutrient-poor natural environment.

Mating

Pseudolithoxus dumus has been kept in captivity and photographed in detail — PlanetCatfish hosts a rich image gallery documenting both sexes, the dimorphic pectoral fins and papillae, and multiple developmental stages of the fry — but no formal breeding report is listed on the site as of the most recent records. The pronounced sexual dimorphism makes sexing straightforward and is one of the species' attractions for the specialist keeper.

Courtship behaviour has not been published in detail, but general Pseudolithoxus and Ancistrini patterns provide a framework. Males are territorial around preferred cave or crevice sites on rocky substrates; an established male will defend his territory against rival males using the elaborate odontodes as both visual signal and physical deterrent. In a tank with adequate rocky structure, a male and a compatible female should show the female approaching the male's site after a period of mutual assessment.

Females gravid with eggs develop a noticeably wider body profile. The PlanetCatfish images show clearly differentiated pectoral spines (males have an additional row of odontodes and a more elongated spine) and genital papillae (males with a pointed papilla, females a rounded one). These cues allow reliable sexing even outside breeding condition.

Breeding

Although detailed breeding reports for P. dumus are not registered on PlanetCatfish, the species' presence in specialist collections and the detailed photographic documentation of newly hatched fry, fry at four weeks, five weeks, and seven weeks, and seven-month-old juveniles on PlanetCatfish strongly suggests captive reproduction has occurred among serious keepers even if formal reports have not been submitted.

Based on the body of evidence from the photographs and by analogy with congeners, P. dumus is a cave spawner: the male selects a narrow crevice or cavity in rocky substrate, the female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on the cave wall, and the male remains with the clutch to fan and guard it. Newly hatched fry are large and yolk-rich, clinging immediately to rock surfaces and beginning to graze biofilm within the first week.

For a tank attempt, the requirements are: a dedicated pair (sexes clearly distinguishable), soft acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, conductivity below 100 µS/cm, temperature 75–79 °F), a rocky aquascape with multiple narrow crevices and flat-rock caves, and very high water quality. Strong flow and high oxygenation replicate the Orinoco rapids microhabitat. A period of cooler, softer water followed by a gradual return to normal parameters may help trigger spawning, as it mimics the seasonal blackwater flood cycle.

In the aquarium

Pseudolithoxus dumus is a genuine specialist fish: its requirements for soft, acidic, oxygen-rich water and a high-flow rocky environment place it well outside the comfort zone of the general community pleco keeper, but it rewards experienced keepers with a striking, active, and characterful animal that is markedly different in behaviour and appearance from the more commonly available armoured catfishes.

A tank of 20–30 US gal is adequate for a pair, provided the flow is vigorous and the aquascape is dominated by smooth rock, slate, and ceramic caves rather than substrate. The water parameters are critical: pH 5.0–6.5, very soft (below 6 dH, ideally less than 3 dH), temperature 73–79 °F. The fish will not thrive in hard, alkaline water typical of many community tanks. Reverse osmosis or soft rainwater blended to appropriate parameters is advisable for long-term success.

Flow is genuinely important — powerheads or spray bars directing strong current across the rocks replicate the rapid-flow microhabitat and are essential for health and behaviour. Standard box or canister filtration with a mild return flow is insufficient. Oxygenation should be high.

Diet as described (algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables, occasional protein). The fish is not aggressive toward unrelated species and can be maintained with other soft-acidic-water plecos or small, non-boisterous fish like tetras and dwarf cichlids native to the same Orinoco blackwater system. Inter-male aggression means only one adult male should be kept per cave-dense tank unless space is very generous.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudolithoxus dumus as Least Concern in 2020, based on a distribution extending across the upper Orinoco, Casiquiare, and upper Negro river systems in Venezuela, with no evidence of significant population decline at the time of assessment. The range is remote and relatively undisturbed; the upper Orinoco region in Amazonas State, Venezuela, remains one of the less accessible parts of northern South America and has not experienced the industrial-scale deforestation or agricultural development that has impacted more accessible Neotropical river systems.

Nonetheless, threats are not absent. Venezuela's ongoing political and economic instability has implications for environmental enforcement; artisanal and illegal gold mining in Amazonas State is expanding into previously pristine territories, and cyanide and mercury from mining operations pose acute threats to acidic, low-conductivity systems where the buffering capacity to neutralise chemical inputs is minimal. Cyanide and mercury are particularly devastating to soft-blackwater fish communities, and P. dumus, as a specialist of highly oligotrophic rocky substrates, is likely sensitive to any significant deterioration of water chemistry.

The species is collected for the ornamental trade in small numbers; collection pressure is not considered a threat at current levels. The IUCN assessment should be revisited as mining expansion in the Venezuelan Amazon continues to accelerate.
