Taxonomy & naming
Pseudolithoxus tigris was originally described by Jonathan Armbruster and Francisco Provenzano in 2000 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 11, number 3, pages 241–254, figure 5), under the combination Lasiancistrus tigris. The type locality is a backwater of the Río Orinoco behind a sand playa approximately 0.5 hours upstream from Isla Temblador, at coordinates 3°04'N, 66°28'W, Estado Amazonas, Venezuela. The Catalog of Fishes (CAS, spid 65981) records the valid current combination as Pseudolithoxus tigris (Armbruster & Provenzano, 2000), within Loricariidae: Hypostominae. The synonym Lasiancistrus tigris Armbruster & Provenzano 2000 is no longer in use.
Pseudolithoxus was erected by Armbruster (2008) to accommodate a group of Venezuelan species previously placed in Lasiancistrus — flat-bodied, wide-finned rheophiles of the Orinoco system. The name reflects the superficially stone-like appearance of these fish when flattened against rock. FishBase confirms the distribution as the upper Orinoco and Ventuari River basins in Venezuela.
In the hobby, P. tigris carries the L-number L257, assigned through the DATZ (Das Aquarium) German aquarium magazine numbering system. The number applies specifically to this species.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 3.5 in SL (FishBase; Fisch-Muller in Reis et al. 2003). The body is the hallmark of the genus: strongly depressed (dorsoventrally flattened), with a wide, pancake-like profile that maximises contact with the substrate. The head is broad, the snout rounded in dorsal view, and the eyes are placed high on the head. All fins are proportionally very large for the body — the pectoral fins especially extend widely outward, functioning as suction devices in current alongside the oral disc.
The colour pattern is what the epithet describes: the body and head are pale grey to cream with numerous broad, irregular, dark brown to black transverse bars crossing the body and extending onto the fins. The exact pattern varies among individuals and can include a reticulated or spotty appearance at fine scale, but the dominant effect is strongly banded. FishBase notes 23–24 lateral line plates, 7–8 dorsal plates, and 4–5 interdorsal plates, with 7 dorsal soft rays.
Sexual dimorphism is reported along lines typical of Ancistrine plecos: breeding males develop elongated odontodes on the pectoral spines and interopercular region. Females in breeding condition are broader across the body. The papilla shape provides a secondary indicator of sex.
Habitat
Pseudolithoxus tigris occupies the upper Orinoco River and the Río Ventuari, a major right-bank tributary in Estado Amazonas, Venezuela. This is a región of ancient Precambrian Shield bedrock — the Guiana Highlands — where rivers run over exposed granite and gneiss, forming extensive rapids (raudales) and rock outcrops. Water in these systems is typically soft and slightly acidic to neutral: low conductivity, pH around 5.5–7.0, temperatures of 73–81 °F, and very high dissolved oxygen from turbulent flow.
The species is a true rheophile, found pressed against rocks and boulders in moderate to strong current. The dramatically flattened body and expansive pectoral fins are adaptations to precisely this microhabitat — allowing the fish to maintain position against rapid flow while grazing the biofilm layer off hard surfaces. It is not found in still or soft-substrate environments. The upper Orinoco and Ventuari are in a relatively remote part of Venezuela (Estado Amazonas), limiting both scientific collecting and commercial ornamental collection.
Feeding
Like other Pseudolithoxus, P. tigris is a periphyton grazer and aufwuchs feeder. In its natural habitat of fast-flowing rock surfaces, the primary food source is the biofilm (algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and associated meiofauna) that coats exposed rock and bedrock outcrops. The oral disc, positioned on the ventral surface, is broad and surrounded by papillose lips — an architecture evolved for rasping thin biofilm layers from hard, often near-vertical surfaces in current.
In aquarium conditions, the species requires a diet dominated by algae-based foods: spirulina wafers, algae tablets, and biofilm growth are the ideal staples. Blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, sweet potato) are accepted. Unlike xylophagous plecos, P. tigris does not need driftwood in the diet, though wood provides surface area for biofilm colonisation. Small invertebrate food items (bloodworm, brine shrimp) can be offered occasionally. Feeding at night or in low-light conditions is most effective, as the species is largely crepuscular and nocturnal in its activity pattern.
Mating
Aquarium breeding of P. tigris has not been formally documented in the published literature, and PlanetCatfish holds no confirmed breeding reports as of 2026. Given the habitat characteristics — fast water, bedrock substrate — successful reproduction in captivity likely requires conditions that closely replicate the upper Orinoco environment: high water flow, elevated dissolved oxygen, cool-to-warm seasonal variation, and hard rocky or slate surfaces.
In related Pseudolithoxus and Ancistrini more broadly, the reproductive system involves male territory-holding around rocky cavities or crevices. Males develop enhanced odontodes and may lock fin spines with rivals. Courtship involves the male patrolling near potential spawning sites and guiding or pursuing a receptive female. The evidence from close relatives suggests cave or rock-cavity spawning, with the male providing post-spawning brood care. No clutch-size estimates are available for this species specifically.
Breeding
No confirmed aquarium spawning of Pseudolithoxus tigris is documented in the literature or in major hobbyist databases as of 2026. The combination of remote wild origin, rheophilic ecology, and specific water chemistry requirements makes this a challenging species to condition and breed in captivity.
Based on the biology of related rheophilic ancistrine plecos (including other Pseudolithoxus species), reproduction is expected to be cave-based, with eggs deposited on rock or hard substrate inside a defended cavity. Successful conditioning would likely require replication of the seasonal Orinoco cycle — a cooler, lower water period followed by warmer, higher water — along with high oxygenation and strong current. Should breeding be achieved, the male is expected to fan and guard the clutch, and the fry would be benthic and rock-clinging from an early stage. This species would represent a significant captive-breeding achievement.
In the aquarium
Pseudolithoxus tigris is a moderately challenging species suited to experienced pleco keepers who can replicate its rheophilic habitat requirements. The most critical element is water flow: a strong current directed across flat rock or slate surfaces is essential. The tank should include substantial flat stone features — slate sheets, flat river rock — positioned to create horizontal and angled surfaces with good water movement passing across them.
Minimum tank size for a single adult is approximately 25 US gal; 40–55 US gal is preferable for a pair, with additional volume if a group is kept. Water parameters: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, conductivity ideally low (under 200 µS), and very high dissolved oxygen (close to saturation). Nitrate and ammonia must be kept near zero. Weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are recommended.
Compatible tankmates are rheophilic species that can tolerate strong current: other Venezuelan or Orinoco-system plecos (kept at low stocking density with adequate territory), small characids, and danionins. Avoid slow-water fish that cannot manage the current, and avoid robust competitors for the limited flat rock territory. P. tigris is peaceful toward other species but can be territorial toward conspecifics over prime rock sites. The species is not common in the hobby and commands a premium price when available; wild-caught individuals are occasionally imported from Venezuela.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudolithoxus tigris as Least Concern in 2021 (criterion date: 4 January 2021). The assessment is based on distribution in the upper Orinoco and Ventuari systems, which are relatively remote and partially protected within Venezuela's Amazon territory.
The upper Orinoco basin in Estado Amazonas is one of the less-disturbed major river systems in South America, though it faces increasing pressures from illegal gold mining (garimpo), which causes mercury contamination and sedimentation. The Yanomami Indigenous territory, which overlaps part of the range, provides some degree of de facto protection. Freshwater Ecoregions of the World recognises the Upper Orinoco as a distinct ecoregion with high endemism. The species' ornamental fish trade pressure is light relative to more commercially significant Orinoco plecos. No captive-breeding supply exists to offset wild collection.
