The São Francisco sailfin pleco is the endemic armoured catfish of one of South America's most culturally and ecologically significant river systems — a basin shared with no other Pterygoplichthys species. Reaching over 12 in standard length and equipped with the hallmark hyper-extended dorsal sail of the genus, this is a robust benthic grazer whose terrestrial burrowing habit during the breeding season sets it apart from most of its tank-dwelling relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Pterygoplichthys etentaculatus was originally described by Spix and Agassiz in 1829, in their monumental work Selecta genera et species piscium quos in itinere per Brasiliam (page 7, plate 4, figures 1–2), from material collected in the Rio São Francisco, Januaria, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Pterygoplichthys etentaculatus, with the combination first moved to the present genus by Eigenmann and Eigenmann in 1889. Several synonyms have accumulated over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Ancistrus longimanus, Glyptoperichthys duodecimalis, Hypostoma etentaculatum, Hypostomus brevitentaculatus, and Pterygoplichthys duodecimalis; all are now subsumed under the 1829 name.

The genus Pterygoplichthys is the principal lineage of sailfin plecos — large, omnivorous, burrowing loricariids placed in subfamily Hypostominae (tribe Hypostomini sensu Armbruster, 2004). The genus is reliably identified by ten or more rays in the dorsal fin, a feature shared by no other pleco genera. No L-number has been assigned to this species; it does not appear prominently in the German aquarium fish trade in the way that Orinoco or Xingu sailfins do, likely because its distribution in the São Francisco basin limits its availability to the hobby.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 12.5 in standard length, with published weights up to 860 g for large specimens. The body is heavily armoured with broad, overlapping scutes. Ground colour is dark brown to olive, with a pattern of cream to pale yellow vermiculations — worm-like spots and reticulations — across the dorsum and flanks; the underside tends to be paler and more sparsely patterned. The dorsal fin is dramatically enlarged, with ten or more rays forming the sail-like structure diagnostic of the genus. Pectoral fin spines are robust.

Like other Pterygoplichthys, the mouth is positioned ventrally and equipped with bi-lobed teeth well suited to scraping biofilm, algae, and organic matter from hard surfaces. The epibranchial organ allows limited aerial respiration — the fish can gulp air into a modified portion of the intestine, an adaptation that underpins its ability to survive in warm, seasonally hypoxic waters.

Sexual dimorphism in P. etentaculatus follows the Pterygoplichthys pattern: in mature fish the genital papilla provides a reliable indicator, with the male's papilla being a small, thick, noticeably protruding stump, while the female's is flatter and recessed. Gravid females may appear broader-bodied when viewed from above, but the distinction is subtle outside the breeding season.

Habitat

Pterygoplichthys etentaculatus is endemic to the Rio São Francisco basin of eastern Brazil, one of South America's great river systems running roughly 2,435 mi from the highlands of Minas Gerais to the Atlantic coast of Alagoas and Sergipe. The São Francisco is a whitewater river with turbid, moderately hard water; FishBase records pH 6.2–7.8 and hardness to approximately 25 dH, with temperatures in the range 72–86 °F.

The species is demersal and associated with soft-bottomed, shallow to mid-depth areas of the river — floodplains, marginal vegetation zones, and the softer substrates of the main channel. Like other Pterygoplichthys it is a burrowing species: breeding males excavate tunnels in soft earthen riverbanks above the waterline or at the waterline, which serve as nesting cavities. The São Francisco basin is characterised by marked dry and wet seasons, with water levels varying considerably; P. etentaculatus tolerates these fluctuations and is capable of facultative air breathing, allowing it to persist in shallow, warm pools during the dry season.

Feeding

Pterygoplichthys etentaculatus is an omnivore with a strong bias toward plant material and biofilm. In the wild, the diet comprises algae rasped from hard substrates, aufwuchs (the complex of algae, bacteria, fungi, and detritus that colonises submerged surfaces), decaying plant matter, and incidental invertebrates encountered while grazing. PlanetCatfish notes it is a good algae eater, particularly when young and actively growing.

In the aquarium, the species accepts a broad range of foods. Algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, and blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, sweet potato) form a good dietary base. Sinking pellets containing Spirulina and vegetable matter are preferred over high-protein carnivore foods. Occasional offerings of frozen bloodworm or similar invertebrates can supplement the diet but should not dominate it. Like most large Pterygoplichthys, this species produces substantial amounts of waste, which has implications for filtration capacity and maintenance schedule in captivity.

Mating

Reproductive behaviour in Pterygoplichthys has been studied most thoroughly in the Orinoco sailfin (P. multiradiatus) and related species, and the pattern is broadly consistent across the genus. Males establish and defend nesting burrows excavated in soft riverbanks — tunnel entrances typically at or just above the waterline, leading to an enlarged nesting chamber. Burrow defence is vigorous; territorial interactions between males can involve jaw-locking and physical displacement.

Female P. etentaculatus in breeding condition develop a visibly broadened body when viewed from above. The male courts females at the burrow entrance and, once accepted, the pair spawns within the chamber. The male then seals himself inside with the egg mass and provides exclusive paternal care. The egg mass is described as bright orange. Clutch sizes in wild Pterygoplichthys can number in the hundreds to low thousands of eggs. Captive spawning of P. etentaculatus has not been formally reported, though related species have been bred in outdoor ponds and large aquaria where appropriate burrowing substrate is available.

Breeding

As with other Pterygoplichthys, P. etentaculatus is a burrow-spawner with strict paternal care. The male excavates a tunnel in a soft earth substrate, spawning occurs within the tunnel chamber, and the male remains inside to fan and guard the bright orange egg mass. PlanetCatfish notes that captive breeding has not been documented for this species; in nature, the male occupies the tunnel throughout incubation.

For other sailfin plecos, incubation lasts roughly 7–10 days at typical tropical temperatures, after which fry emerge from the burrow and begin feeding independently on biofilm and soft organic material almost immediately. The large clutch size — potentially hundreds of eggs — is consistent with the genus as a whole.

Triggering spawning in captivity requires provision of a suitable burrowing medium (deep, compacted clay or loam, or large ceramic or PVC tubes as a proxy burrow) and conditioning adults on a varied, nutritious diet with regular large water changes and potentially a simulated dry season to cue breeding behaviour. The species' size and waste output make it impractical for most home aquarists to attempt breeding.

In the aquarium

At 30+ cm standard length (total length may approach 15.5 in in large specimens), P. etentaculatus is firmly in the category of large plecos that require serious commitment. A single adult needs a minimum tank of around 105–130 US gal; anything smaller will result in chronic stress from restricted swimming space and rapidly deteriorating water quality from the fish's considerable waste output. For long-term maintenance, 160 US gal or more is more appropriate.

Water should reflect the São Francisco origin: temperature 72–86 °F, pH 6.2–7.8, moderate hardness, and excellent filtration and oxygenation. Weekly water changes of 30–40% are essential. Driftwood, flat rocks, and caves give the fish surfaces to rasp and secure resting positions.

P. etentaculatus is generally unaggressive toward dissimilar tankmates but will be competitive toward other large plecos sharing territory. In sufficiently large systems, multiple specimens can coexist if ample hiding places reduce sight-line conflicts. Avoid keeping with small fish that fit in the mouth.

This species is not widely available in the hobby — it is rarely seen in trade compared to the Orinoco or Amazon sailfins — and is practically absent from captive-breeding programmes. Specimens that do appear in shops are typically wild-caught imports from Brazil. Its restricted range and endemic status, combined with ongoing pressure on the São Francisco basin, make it an ecologically sensitive choice and one worth understanding before acquisition.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pterygoplichthys etentaculatus as Least Concern in 2018, reflecting a distribution across the São Francisco basin that, while restricted to a single river system, remains relatively intact with no evidence of severe population decline at the time of assessment.

However, the São Francisco basin faces significant and escalating pressures. The river has been severely impacted by the São Francisco River Diversion project (Projeto de Integração do Rio São Francisco), agricultural runoff, deforestation in the Cerrado headwaters, and the hydrological modifications of multiple hydroelectric installations. Siltation has increased substantially, and seasonal flow regimes have been altered by dam operations. These changes affect benthic habitats and the soft-bank burrowing sites that are critical to successful reproduction in this species.

As an endemic species with no natural dispersal route outside the São Francisco drainage, P. etentaculatus cannot recolonise from adjacent basins if populations are locally extirpated. The 2018 LC assessment predates some of the most significant basin-level hydrological modifications and may not fully capture ongoing trajectory. Reassessment with updated population data would be valuable.
