Taxonomy & naming
Pterygoplichthys weberi was formally described by Jonathan Armbruster and Lawrence Page in 2006, in the paper 'Redescription of Pterygoplichthys punctatus and description of a new species of Pterygoplichthys (Siluriformes: Loricariidae)', published in Neotropical Ichthyology volume 4, number 4 (pages 401–409). The type locality is Laguna El Vaticano, in the Río Caquetá drainage near Florencia, Caquetá, Colombia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Pterygoplichthys weberi Armbruster & Page, 2006, with no junior synonyms listed.
The species epithet honours Dr Claude Weber of the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève, whose long career has been devoted to Loricariidae systematics and who produced significant revisions of the genus Pterygoplichthys. Within the family, P. weberi belongs to the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). The genus Pterygoplichthys is diagnosed by having ten or more dorsal-fin rays — usually eleven or twelve — a feature shared with almost no other loricariid genus, and which makes field identification of genus (though not species) unusually straightforward.
Phylogenetically, P. weberi is most closely allied to P. punctatus (with which it was confused prior to the 2006 revision): both share a buccal papilla divided medially, but the two are separated by the degree of division (partial in P. weberi, complete in P. punctatus), the degree of spotting on the abdomen (fewer in P. weberi), and body width. No aquarium L-number has been assigned to this species.
Morphology
Adults reach 8 in standard length (SL) — making this a medium-sized member of a genus that otherwise includes several 15.5–19.5 in giants. The body plan is classically loricariid: heavily armoured with bony scutes arranged in overlapping longitudinal rows, a broad depressed head, ventrally positioned sucker mouth, and the oversized sail-like dorsal fin that gives the group the common name 'sailfin pleco'. In P. weberi the dorsal fin typically carries 11 rays (occasionally 12), one of the characters that separates it from P. multiradiatus (12–13 rays).
Colouration is dark brown to olive-black on the dorsal surface, with a pattern of small, diffuse pale spots on the body; the abdomen carries relatively few spots compared to P. punctatus. The cheek plates of adults bear hypertrophied odontodes — noticeably enlarged spine-like structures — a feature absent in several congeners (P. anisitsi, P. disjunctivus, P. multiradiatus, P. pardalis). The snout is broadly rounded rather than narrow and pointed (cf. P. undecimalis). The lateral keel odontodes are nearly perpendicular to the plates and notably elongated in adults, a key character used in the original description.
Sexual dimorphism in Pterygoplichthys is subtle in captivity. The genital papilla is the most reliable indicator: in sexually mature males it is a small, thick, protruding stump, while in females it is inconspicuous and lies flush with the body. In large, conditioned individuals the broader abdomen of a gravid female can also be apparent in dorsal view.
Habitat
Pterygoplichthys weberi occurs in the upper Amazon basin across Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, with confirmed records from the Río Marañón, Río Ucayali, Río Caquetá, and the upper Río Amazonas proper (FishBase, 2006; Armbruster & Page, 2006). The type locality — Laguna El Vaticano, a floodplain lake in the Caquetá drainage — hints at a preference for slower or impounded reaches rather than swift mainline rivers, though the species also appears in the Marañón and Napo systems, which include faster montane reaches downstream of the Andean piedmont.
Ecologically, P. weberi occupies the soft-substrate benthic zone, foraging on biofilm and detritus adhering to submerged surfaces. Like all Pterygoplichthys, it is a facultative air-breather (Ref. 126274 in FishBase), capable of swallowing atmospheric oxygen through a highly vascularised hindgut — an adaptation that allows it to survive in warm, oxygen-depleted waters during the dry season, including isolated pools and floodplain lagoons where dissolved oxygen may approach zero. Tropical freshwater throughout the distribution; demersal.
Feeding
Pterygoplichthys weberi is an omnivorous aufwuchs and detritus feeder. The large, ventrally directed sucker mouth is lined with fine, comb-like teeth adapted for scraping biofilm — the thin coating of diatoms, cyanobacteria, green algae, and fine organic matter that colonises hard and soft substrates in slow tropical rivers. The species is regarded as an effective algae eater, particularly when young and growing rapidly, though adults in spacious conditions often shift toward detritus and scavenging.
In the aquarium, P. weberi accepts a wide variety of foods: algae wafers and spirulina discs form a sensible dietary base, supplemented by blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, peas, spinach) and occasional protein items such as sinking pellets, bloodworm, or blanched prawn. The large body size of adults means they produce considerable waste, and a high-fibre vegetable-heavy diet is preferable to heavy protein feeding. Driftwood for grazing is beneficial — Pterygoplichthys will rasp at soft wood surfaces and ingest the associated biofilm and fungal matter, though it is not a true xylophage in the manner of Panaque.
Mating
Wild breeding behaviour in P. weberi has not been studied in detail, but the reproductive system is shared across the genus and reasonably well documented in congeners, particularly P. pardalis and P. multiradiatus in the context of invasive population studies. Males are territorial, establishing and defending tunnel burrows excavated in soft mud banks well above the water line or in saturated banks at the waterline. A single male may hold multiple burrows and attract a succession of females.
In captivity, breeding Pterygoplichthys is generally not achieved in typical aquarium settings because the species requires the ability to excavate long (often 2–3 ft) tunnels; soft earthen substrate of that kind is not practical in glass tanks. Males show territorial behaviour even without burrows, patrolling their section of the tank bottom and occasionally engaging in mouth-to-mouth or body-shove contests with rivals. The genital papilla, as described under Morphology, is the most reliable means of sexing specimens before attempting a breeding setup.
Breeding
In nature, Pterygoplichthys weberi — like its congeners — is a burrow-spawner with paternal brood care. The male excavates and defends a tunnel in a muddy bank; the female deposits a mass of bright orange adhesive eggs within the burrow chamber, and the male remains at the entrance, fanning water over the clutch with his pectoral fins and guarding against predators and rival males. Clutch sizes in Pterygoplichthys can be very large, sometimes numbering in the hundreds to over a thousand eggs.
Captive breeding has not been reported for P. weberi specifically (PlanetCatfish, 2010). The primary constraint is the need for appropriate burrowing substrate. Specialist breeders working with this genus in larger outdoor ponds or purpose-built aquatic facilities in tropical countries have had success by providing deep mud or sandy banks, but this is not achievable in standard home aquaria. Fry, when produced, are reported to emerge from the burrow entrance as miniature versions of adults and initially remain close to the burrow under paternal supervision.
In the aquarium
At up to 8 in SL — closer to 10 in total length — P. weberi is a mid-sized pleco that requires a tank of at least 55 US gal for a single adult, with proportionally larger volumes for groups. Like all Pterygoplichthys, it is a robust, adaptable fish that tolerates a wide range of water conditions, but it benefits from clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow. Tropical temperatures of 73–86 °F are suitable; pH can range from around 6.5 to 7.8.
The species is generally peaceful with fish too large to eat, but can be aggressive toward conspecifics and other pleco species competing for the same territory or feeding sites. Multiple individuals can be kept if the tank is large enough and hides/territories are well-distributed. Hard PVC pipes, ceramic tubes, and driftwood tangles all serve as refuges.
Algae wafers, vegetables, and sinking pellets should be offered after lights-out, when this nocturnal species is most active. Driftwood in the tank is appreciated for grazing. As a facultative air-breather, the fish periodically surfaces to gulp air — this is normal and not a sign of distress unless continuous. Weekly water changes of 25–30% are advisable given the significant waste output of a large loricariid. Compatible with most robust community fish; avoid pairing with aggressive cichlids that may nip at the pleco's exposed soft-rayed fins.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pterygoplichthys weberi as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting an apparently stable distribution across portions of the upper Amazon basin without documented evidence of significant range contraction or population decline. The species is not a major fisheries target but is collected for the ornamental trade from parts of its range.
Conservation concern for the genus Pterygoplichthys as a whole centres on the opposite problem from rarity: several congeners — particularly P. pardalis and P. multiradiatus — have become globally significant invasive species following release of aquarium specimens into warm freshwater systems outside South America. P. weberi has not been documented as established outside its native range as of this writing, but the genus's tolerance for environmental extremes, its ability to air-breathe, and its high fecundity make all Pterygoplichthys potential invaders in thermally suitable waters. Responsible disposal of unwanted specimens — never releasing them — is strongly urged.
