Rineloricaria felipponei is a slender, temperate-water whiptail catfish of the lower Río de la Plata basin, named in honour of the Uruguayan naturalist Florentino Felipponei. In a genus dominated by Amazonian species, its cool-water, high-latitude origin makes it an outlier ecologically — and a manageable choice for aquarists who prefer a loricariid suited to unheated or lightly heated tanks.

Taxonomy & naming

Rineloricaria felipponei was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1943 in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (volume 95, pages 319 and figures 7–9), from specimens collected in Uruguay. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Rineloricaria felipponei as a valid species; the original combination Loricaria felipponei is treated as a synonym, reflecting the subsequent transfer of the species into the reinstated genus Rineloricaria.

The genus Rineloricaria (Bleeker, 1862) belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae — the whiptail catfishes — within Loricariidae. Armbruster (2004) placed Loricariinae as one of the five principal subfamilial lineages in the family, characterised by an elongated, depressed body and a filamentous caudal extension in most species. Rineloricaria itself is the largest genus in Loricariinae, with over 60 valid species distributed widely across South America. The species epithet honours Dr Florentino Silvestre Felipponei Bentos (1852–1939), a Uruguayan naturalist, bryologist, and physician who studied and worked in both Montevideo and Paris. Among the Rineloricaria species already covered in existing files within this database, R. felipponei is distinguished by its temperate La Plata distribution — most congeners are Amazonian or Andean in origin.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) — mid-sized by Rineloricaria standards — giving them a total length (with caudal filament) of roughly 5–6 in in well-grown individuals. The body form is the classic Loricariinae silhouette: extremely flattened dorsoventrally, widest across the head and pectoral girdle, tapering sharply into a long, narrow caudal peduncle that terminates in a whip-like caudal extension.

The dorsal surface is covered in bony scutes arranged in lateral and dorsal rows, pale to medium brown with variable darker mottling — coloration that provides camouflage against sandy and gravelly substrates. The ventral surface is lighter and largely unplated. The ventrally positioned mouth is a suction disc with fine, multi-cusped teeth suited to scraping algal and detrital biofilm from hard surfaces. The snout is depressed and pointed.

Sexual dimorphism in Rineloricaria follows the family-wide pattern: breeding males develop prominent odontodes (spine-like projections) on the sides of the snout, cheek region (interoperculum), and sometimes along the dorsal surfaces of the pectoral fin rays. These are absent or greatly reduced in females. Gravid females are noticeably broader-bodied when viewed from above, and the genital papilla is visibly larger and more rounded than the small, pointed papilla of the male. Distinguishing the sexes outside the breeding season is more difficult.

Habitat

Rineloricaria felipponei is native to the lower Río de la Plata basin, with confirmed records from Uruguay and adjacent northeastern Argentina. Field records include the vicinity of Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, reflecting a distribution in the broad coastal drainages and estuarine tributaries that feed the Plata estuary.

This is temperate loricariid territory — unlike the overwhelmingly tropical distribution of most armoured catfishes, the lower La Plata basin experiences distinct cool winters (water temperatures regularly below 59 °F) and warm summers. Substrate preference is sandy or fine gravelly riverbeds with moderate current, though the species also occupies still or slow-moving backwaters and oxbow lagoons associated with the main river system. Submerged vegetation and leaf litter provide microhabitat refugia. The Río de la Plata itself is a massive, turbid, tannic estuary system, but many smaller tributary streams are clearer.

The species is described as demersal and appears to exploit biofilm-covered sand, fine gravel, and wood surfaces. Water chemistry in the region ranges from soft and slightly acidic in highland tributaries to harder, near-neutral conditions in the lowland Plata floodplain; the fish has evolved under naturally variable conditions.

Feeding

Like other members of Loricariinae, R. felipponei is primarily an aufwuchs grazer and detritivore. The oral suction disc is adapted for scraping diatoms, filamentous algae, periphyton, and organic detritus from submerged hard surfaces — sand grains, gravel, submerged wood, and plant stems. The species is not a wood-eater in the manner of Panaque or Panaqolus, but it readily rasps surfaces colonised by biofilm.

In the aquarium, the feeding requirements are straightforward: sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based discs, and blanched vegetables (courgette/zucchini, cucumber, spinach) form an appropriate staple. Small amounts of live or frozen invertebrates — chironomid larvae (bloodworm), Daphnia, and Artemia nauplii — can be offered to supplement the diet, particularly when conditioning adults for breeding. The fish is primarily nocturnal or crepuscular in feeding activity, becoming more active as tank lights dim. Siphoning detritus accumulations into the substrate rather than across open water suits the suction-disc feeding style.

Mating

Detailed courtship observations specifically for R. felipponei are not published in the primary literature, but the general Rineloricaria reproductive biology is well documented across the genus from aquarium observations and field data. Males with developed snout and cheek odontodes actively patrol and defend a chosen spawning cavity — usually a section of hollow driftwood, a PVC tube, or a rock crevice in the aquarium. The odontodes are used in male–male confrontations, with broadside displays and occasional physical contact.

Conditioning males and females with seasonal temperature fluctuations — mimicking the natural cool-winter, warm-summer cycle of the La Plata basin — appears to stimulate reproductive readiness. Several aquarists have noted that a gradual temperature drop to around 64–68 °F followed by a slow return to 75–79 °F, combined with increased feeding with varied, nutritious foods, is effective at prompting courtship. The male's enlarged pelvic fins, documented in congeners, are thought to assist in sperm dispersal over the egg mass under flowing-water conditions.

Breeding

Rineloricaria species in general are substrate-spawning loricariids with paternal brood care, and R. felipponei appears to follow this pattern. The male selects and defends a hollow cavity — ideally a tight-fitting tube of appropriate diameter — and courts the female into depositing her eggs on the interior wall or roof of the cavity. Eggs are adhesive and relatively large for the body size of the female.

Following spawning, the male remains in the cavity, fanning the clutch with his fins to ensure oxygenation and removing infertile or fungused eggs. Incubation lasts approximately 5–8 days depending on temperature; cooler water slows development. The newly hatched larvae carry a yolk sac and begin feeding on biofilm surfaces within a few days of hatching. The male continues to guard the cavity until the fry are free-swimming and independently foraging.

PlanetCatfish records no confirmed captive breeding reports for this specific species as of 2025, so the above draws on the well-established reproductive biology of congeners such as R. lanceolata, R. fallax, and R. parva. Aquarists interested in breeding this species should provide multiple tubes of 1 in internal diameter, soft acidic water in the 68–75 °F range, and a seasonal temperature cycle.

In the aquarium

Rineloricaria felipponei is not a commonly traded species — it lacks an L-number and its temperate origin places it outside the mainstream tropical pleco trade. However, it is occasionally available through specialist breeders and Uruguayan or Argentine fish exporters, and represents an interesting option for aquarists seeking a non-tropical loricariid.

The species' cool-water origin is its most distinctive husbandry consideration. Optimal temperature is in the range 64–75 °F; sustained temperatures above 79–81 °F may cause stress. This makes it suitable for unheated tanks in temperate climates, or for setups shared with cool-water South American species such as some Gymnogeophagus cichlids or southern-hemisphere characins. A standard 20–30 US gal aquarium is sufficient for one or two adults; sand or fine gravel substrate is strongly preferred over coarse material, and multiple hiding spots — hollow driftwood, terracotta pipes, smooth-bore PVC tubes — are essential.

Water chemistry should be soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5. The fish is peaceful toward other species and is not prone to fin-nipping. Tank hygiene matters more than precise water chemistry: Rineloricaria are low-oxygen-tolerant via facultative air-breathing but thrive in clean, well-filtered conditions. Avoid high-protein feeding regimes. This is a shy, nocturnally active catfish that spends most daylight hours sheltered in its chosen crevice.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria felipponei as Data Deficient (DD) in February 2021. This status reflects incomplete distributional and population data rather than a confirmed absence of threat — the species' restriction to the lower La Plata basin of Uruguay and adjacent Argentina means its known range is geographically limited, and detailed survey data are lacking.

The lower La Plata basin faces significant pressure from agricultural runoff, urban development around Buenos Aires and Montevideo, channel modification, and water extraction. These factors affect sediment loads, water quality, and instream habitat for benthic fishes. Without targeted surveys confirming population trends, the conservation status cannot be upgraded to a risk category — but the DD designation should be read as a knowledge gap rather than reassurance.

The species is of no commercial fisheries interest and receives no legal protection outside general Uruguayan and Argentine freshwater biodiversity legislation. Captive breeding records are essentially absent, making R. felipponei a species whose wild populations represent the only known reservoir.
