Taxonomy & naming
Rineloricaria lima was first described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1853, published in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe (volume 6, page 89, plate 6, figures 1a–b). The original genus placement was Loricaria, making the basionym Loricaria lima Kner, 1853. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid=5659; updated June 2026) lists the valid combination as Rineloricaria lima (Kner 1853), with the parenthetical authority indicating the genus transfer from Loricaria. The holotype was collected from Brazil, and the type specimen (held at NMW, Vienna) is probably lost (Isbrücker 1980:107). No junior synonyms are currently listed.
The genus Rineloricaria belongs to subfamily Loricariinae (the whiptail catfishes), one of the five subfamilies of Loricariidae (Armbruster 2004). Loricariinae is distinguished by an elongate, depressed body with a strongly extended, filamentous caudal fin, reduced lateral-plate rows, and typically an unplated or scarcely plated ventral surface — the body plan adapted for life on sand, fine gravel, and leaf litter in slow to moderate current. With over 74 valid species (Fricke et al. 2024), Rineloricaria is the most speciose genus of the subfamily.
Ferraris (2003) treated R. lima as a valid species in the family checklist; subsequent South American faunal works (López et al. 2003, Mirande & Koerber 2015, Nión et al. 2016) have consistently maintained its validity for the Río de la Plata drainage.
Morphology
Rineloricaria lima is a strongly depressed, elongate loricariid in the typical whiptail body plan. FishBase does not record a maximum length for the species, reflecting sparse published data; congeners in the genus range from around 3.5 in SL (R. lanceolata) to over 12 in SL (R. latirostris), and R. lima is generally regarded as a moderate-sized representative of the genus — likely in the range of 6–10 in total length based on Kner's original description and the body proportions typical of the group, though this is not securely documented from measured specimens.
The body is covered in keeled bony plates along the dorsal and lateral surfaces, with a mostly bare ventral surface. The head is broad and depressed, with a notably flattened profile that allows the fish to press closely against the substrate. The snout is slightly projecting. The tail is greatly elongated, tapering to a filamentous tip — the 'whiptail' character — and the filament length relative to body length varies by sex and age.
Colouration in whiptail loricariids is typically cryptic: brown, grey-brown, or tan, with darker spots, patches, or reticulations that break up the outline against sandy or pebbly substrates. Details for R. lima specifically are not well described in the hobby literature owing to the species' rarity in the trade compared with more commonly kept whiptails.
Sexual dimorphism in Rineloricaria generally involves odontode development on the sides of the head and body in males, which become more pronounced during the breeding season, and females are generally broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Rineloricaria lima is distributed in the Río de la Plata basin, which includes the Río Paraná, Río Uruguay, and the lowland rivers of Argentina, southern Brazil, and Uruguay — the Catalog of Fishes records the distribution as 'South America: Rio de la Plata, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.' The La Plata basin is a vast, lowland, subtropical drainage lying south of the Tropic of Capricorn; its major rivers are broad, slow to moderate, and characterised by sand and fine-gravel substrates, marginal vegetation, and seasonal water level fluctuations driven by rainfall.
Whiptail loricariids of the Loricariinae are benthic fish strongly associated with sand and fine-sediment substrates, where their flattened bodies and cryptic colouration make them near-invisible. R. lima likely occupies the slower, marginal sections of Paraná-system rivers — shallow sandy banks, lagoons, and sheltered backwaters with submerged vegetation and leaf accumulations — rather than the main channel.
Water in the lower Río de la Plata system is warm in summer (up to approximately 79 °F) and notably cool in winter (dropping to as low as 61–64 °F in the southern parts of the range), with moderate hardness and near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH. The seasonal thermal variation is a significant ecological feature that distinguishes this species from exclusively tropical loricariids and has practical implications for long-term aquarium care.
Feeding
Rineloricaria lima, like other loricariin whiptails, is primarily a detritivore-omnivore with a strong preference for organic detritus, fine algal material, biofilm, and small benthic invertebrates. The flattened body, subterminal mouth, and feeding position pressed against the substrate are adapted for vacuuming the nutritional layer from fine-grained bottoms — sand, silt, and fine gravel carry rich deposits of diatoms, bacteria, organic particles, and small invertebrates that whiptails exploit continuously.
The teeth are multicuspid and moderately robust, suitable for scraping soft aufwuchs from flat surfaces but not for rasping hard wood. Unlike wood-eating hypostomines, Rineloricaria species do not require or significantly benefit from driftwood in the diet.
In the aquarium, whiptail catfishes of this group accept a broad range of foods presented near or on the substrate: sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, peas, spinach), live and frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, Tubifex, Artemia, daphnia), and fine granular sinking foods. They should be fed after lights-out when competition from diurnal tankmates is reduced. Dietary variety covering both vegetable and protein components is important for conditioning, particularly for breeding.
Mating
Rineloricaria species are tube-spawners, and the general reproductive behaviour of the genus is reasonably well documented from other species (notably R. lanceolata and R. latirostris) even if species-specific data for R. lima are sparse. Males are territorial and compete for access to females and to preferred spawning tubes or crevices; during the breeding season, males develop elongate odontodes along the sides of the head, pectoral spines, and body, used in contest displays and physical encounters with rival males.
Courtship involves the male patrolling near potential spawning sites and attracting the female. The female enters the tube or crevice selected by the male; spawning occurs inside, with the male fertilising as the female deposits eggs. The female departs after spawning, and the male remains to guard.
Seasonal temperature drops appear to be an important spawning cue for La Plata species, consistent with the cooler winter conditions natural to the southern part of the range. In captivity, a temperature reduction of 37–41 °F combined with large fresh-water changes can trigger reproductive readiness. Males in breeding condition are visually distinguishable from females by the brushier, more bristly appearance of the head flanks from the developed odontodes.
Breeding
Rineloricaria lima is a cave-spawner: in captivity, as with other members of the genus, breeding occurs in open-ended tubes (PVC, terracotta, or bamboo) placed on the substrate. The male guards the clutch inside the tube, fanning the eggs with his tail and body movements to maintain oxygen supply and removing any fungused eggs. The female plays no role after spawning.
No specific breeding reports for R. lima are recorded on PlanetCatfish as of 2026, and the species is not commonly kept in the hobby compared with R. lanceolata or the traded 'chocolate whiptail' forms. However, the genus-wide spawning pattern is consistent and well-established: adhesive eggs deposited in the tube, guarded by the male, hatching in approximately five to seven days at typical tank temperatures of 72–79 °F. Fry emerge as free-swimming miniature adults and can take fine sinking foods from the first day.
For breeding to proceed, fish must be well-conditioned on a varied diet that includes protein-rich live or frozen invertebrate foods. A spawning tube of approximately 1–1.5 in diameter and 4–6 in length placed on the substrate provides the appropriate crevice. Multiple tubes in a group setting allow individual males to establish territories without conflict. Cool-season temperature drops (to approximately 64–68 °F) mimicking the La Plata winter appear to be the most effective spawning trigger for this subtropical species.
In the aquarium
Rineloricaria lima is not commonly encountered in the hobby trade and is rarely available as a labelled species; fish sold as 'whiptail catfish' or 'Rineloricaria' are more often R. lanceolata, an unnamed species from the Paraná, or a Colombian import. Keepers specifically seeking R. lima should source from specialist suppliers who confirm origin from La Plata drainage collections.
For the aquarium, R. lima requires a sand or very fine gravel substrate — a hard requirement, not a preference. The fish will not thrive on coarse gravel or bare glass; it needs to perform its natural substrate-pressing feeding behaviour and is prone to abdominal injury on rough bottoms. A tank footprint of at least 80 × 14 in is appropriate for a pair, with groups requiring proportionally more space.
Water parameters should reflect the subtropical La Plata origin: temperature 68–79 °F (cooler than many tropical community fish), pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. Seasonal temperature variation is beneficial; keeping the fish at a constant 79 °F year-round is not detrimental but may reduce long-term vigour. Filtration should provide gentle current — a spray bar directed along the bottom or a gentle powerhead — rather than violent turbulence. The species is not a rheophile.
Compatible tankmates are peaceful mid-water or upper-water fish that do not compete at the substrate: small tetras, danios, and rasboras from cool-temperate habitats are ideal companions that share the temperature range. Corydoras from the La Plata system make natural tank companions. Large, boisterous, or predatory fish are incompatible.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Rineloricaria lima as Data Deficient (DD) in November 2018. The Data Deficient category reflects insufficient information to assign a threat category — not necessarily that the species is without risk, but that the data required to make that determination are lacking. Key gaps include limited survey data on current population size, precise range boundaries, and habitat trends within the Rio de la Plata drainage.
The Río de la Plata basin as a whole is one of the most heavily modified river systems in South America. The Paraná River — the dominant trunk stream of the system — has been extensively dammed, channelised for navigation, and its floodplain reduced by agriculture. Soybean cultivation and cattle ranching have transformed vast areas of the Argentine, Paraguayan, and Brazilian portions of the catchment, with associated sedimentation and agrochemical loading. Uruguay's rivers have experienced similar pressures from intensive agriculture and afforestation with non-native trees.
For a sand-obligate benthic fish with probable restricted micro-habitat preferences, changes to sediment dynamics, water quality, and the connectivity of floodplain habitats are potential stressors. Without a more complete assessment of the species' actual range and population structure, these threats cannot be formally quantified — hence the Data Deficient assessment.
R. lima is not a significant ornamental trade species; it is not regularly exported and has no L-number designation. Captive breeding in the hobby is documented for the genus but not specifically for this species.
