The arrow cichlid, Amphilophus zaliosus, is a slim, silvery fish that lives nowhere on Earth but Laguna de Apoyo, a single volcanic crater lake in Pacific Nicaragua. It is a textbook case of sympatric speciation: genetic and morphometric work shows it evolved in place — in under about 10,000 years — from the stout ancestral Midas cichlid, Amphilophus citrinellus, reshaping itself into a lean open-water hunter that shadows schools of silversides. That whole story plays out in roughly 22 km2 of water, and the fish now shares that water with introduced tilapia and a translocated predator it never evolved to face. The IUCN lists it as Critically Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

George W. Barlow and his student John W. Munsey described the fish in 1976 as Cichlasoma zaliosum, in T. B. Thorson's volume Investigations of the Ichthyofauna of Nicaraguan Lakes. The holotype (CAS 29104), with paratypes at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS 29105) and the Smithsonian (USNM 212181), came from the east shore of Lake Apoyo. It was the first new species pulled out of the Midas-cichlid tangle after a long era of taxonomic lumping, when Barlow, Robert Rush Miller, Jaime Villa and others had collapsed a chaotic pile of nineteenth-century names down to just two valid fish: the Midas cichlid, Amphilophus citrinellus, and the red devil, Amphilophus labiatus.

The genus name Amphilophus joins the Greek amphi (on both sides) and lophos (crest); the epithet reads almost as a portrait, pairing zale (wave-born, for the open water it lives in) with isosus (like an arrow, for its slender body), which is also where its common names come from — arrow cichlid, and in Spanish mojarra flecha (The ETYFish Project). The species was moved from the wastebasket genus Cichlasoma to Amphilophus by the early 2000s, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both treat it as valid there; the IUCN carries Cichlasoma zaliosum Barlow, 1976 as its sole synonym. It sits in the "citrinellus" species group within Amphilophus and is one of several Midas-complex cichlids endemic to Lake Apoyo, alongside more compact relatives such as Amphilophus astorquii, Amphilophus chancho, Amphilophus flaveolus and Amphilophus globosus. Its closest look-alike lives in another lake entirely — the elongate Amphilophus sagittae of Lake Xiloá — which principal-component analysis (Stauffer & McKaye 2002) separated from Amphilophus zaliosus on small but consistent differences.

Morphology

The arrow cichlid is built like its name: an elongate, streamlined body that stands apart from the deep, blunt profile of a typical Midas cichlid. Out of breeding dress it is a plain silvery-gray, marked with a row of about seven dark dorsolateral blotches and a spot at the base of the caudal fin, with thin lips and no frenum. One absence matters for a Midas-complex fish — it has no gold morph at all. The orange-to-white polymorphism common in most other populations of the complex is simply missing from Lake Apoyo.

Bring a fish into breeding condition and those dark blotches stretch into vertical bars that often fuse along the flank, so a spawning arrow cichlid can turn an almost uniform glossy black. The sexes follow the genus rule that males run noticeably larger: field workers on the lake report wild males past 6.5 in standard length, while FishBase lists a maximum of about 8 in total length, and the specimens in the original description averaged a more modest 5 in. Body shape and colour are the practical marks that separate it from the sympatric little Apoyo cichlid, Amphilophus astorquii, which tends toward a greenish cast and a more compact build; the two become reliably distinguishable once they pass roughly 3 in.

Habitat

Amphilophus zaliosus lives in one lake and one lake only: Laguna de Apoyo, a steep-sided volcanic caldera on the Pacific side of Nicaragua, near Granada and Masaya. The lake is young and small — its surface does not exceed about 22 km2, and that is the entire world range of the species, so the IUCN sets both extent of occurrence and area of occupancy at 22 km2 and counts it from a single location.

Apoyo is clear, deep and funnel-shaped, and the arrow cichlid works more of that funnel than its relatives do. It is a benthopelagic fish: a near-shore breeder that also ranges habitually into open water and the pelagic zone, where it follows schools of the endemic silverside Atherinella sardina. Its escape behaviour has long been a giveaway — where other Midas cichlids dive for holes in the rocks when hooked, the arrow cichlid bolts outward toward the deep centre of the lake. Nesting concentrates in the rocky near-shore wherever crevices and burrows are available; the IUCN summarizes breeding at about 5–7 ft, though long-term nest surveys on the south shore recorded arrow-cichlid nests deeper, averaging near 32 ft. The water is warm, alkaline and strongly mineralized. Working in the same Thorson volume that named the fish, Barlow, Baylis and Roberts (1976) measured a surface pH of 8.15, a total hardness of 268 ppm as CaCO3 (about 15 dH), and dissolved solids near 2,680 ppm — roughly twenty times the salt content of neighbouring Lake Nicaragua. The crater is thermally stable and well mixed in its upper layers at around 27–29 C, with divers routinely reporting about 28 C. These are lake-wide figures rather than a microhabitat reading specific to the arrow cichlid, but they place it firmly in warm, hard, basic water.

Feeding

Within Apoyo's flock of endemic cichlids, the arrow cichlid is the limnetic specialist — the slim-bodied fish that exploits open water instead of grubbing the bottom. Its elongate shape is the morphological signature of that lifestyle, and Barluenga and colleagues treated it as the ecologically and morphologically divergent counterpart to the ancestral, high-bodied benthic Amphilophus citrinellus. FishBase places it around trophic level 3.3, in line with a generalist carnivore that leans piscivorous.

In the field it is regularly seen pulling up off the bottom to chase the silverside Atherinella sardina through the water column — behaviour that fits both its body plan and its willingness to move out into the pelagic zone. The rest of the time it mixes with the compact members of the complex over rock and sand. Those other Lake Apoyo cichlids occupy adjacent niches, and the habitat itself was historically structured by beds of the alga Chara, which gave cover and substrate to the lake's snails and young fish — a detail that becomes central to the conservation story below. Gut-content work specific to Amphilophus zaliosus is thin, so the "open-water piscivore" reading rests on its body plan, its observed pursuit of silversides, and the FishBase trophic estimate rather than on a published diet study.

Mating

Like other large Central American cichlids, the arrow cichlid forms pairs that turn markedly territorial and aggressive toward intruders as they come into spawning condition. A pair stakes out and clears a nest site, and the breeding fish darken hard — the flank bars fusing into the near-black livery described above — as part of pairing and defending the chosen spot. Hobbyists who have kept the species describe the same temperament: a fish that is manageable outside of spawning but guards a nest with real conviction.

It also times reproduction to dodge its more abundant neighbours. Nest counts on the lake showed the little Apoyo cichlid, Amphilophus astorquii, peaking in November and December, while the arrow cichlid concentrated its spawning in October and February — easing competition where the two favour similar depths. The arrow cichlid is the rarer breeder of the pair: in one survey it accounted for only about 5% of nests, and competition for the best rocky-reef sites is fierce. Pairs will, though, also spawn in holes over otherwise featureless substrate, away from the structure that draws the other cichlids — a flexibility that lets the slender open-water specialist secure a nest even when the prime reef cavities are taken.

Breeding

Like all Amphilophus, the arrow cichlid is a biparental substrate spawner rather than a mouthbrooder: a pair lays adhesive eggs on a cleaned surface inside the nest, and both parents guard and tend the clutch and the young. Brood care runs long — roughly six weeks of shepherding free-swimming fry — and the pair leads the school through open water and over periphyton-covered surfaces where the fry can graze plankton and other tiny food. Nests usually sit in rocky reefs, where competition for sites is fierce, but pairs will also use holes over open substrate. The IUCN places breeding in the dry season, peaking in October and February, at depths of about 5–7 ft where rocky structure offers burrows and crevices.

No clutch-size figure specific to Amphilophus zaliosus is readily available, and the fish has never been a routine aquarium breeder, so its fecundity is better called undocumented than estimated; the only honest yardstick is the genus pattern, with the ancestral Midas cichlid, Amphilophus citrinellus, laying roughly 300–1,000 eggs per spawn (FishBase). One thing is well documented, and it matters for conservation: a study of brood defence found these crater-lake cichlids respond poorly to the introduced predator Gobiomorus dormitor, mounting a deficient defence against a fish their lineage never evolved alongside (Lehtonen, McCrary & Meyer 2012). That naivety — a capable biparental guard failing to recognize a novel threat to its fry — feeds straight into the species' decline.

In the aquarium

This is a rare fish in the hobby, and that fact belongs at the front. As a Critically Endangered single-lake endemic, the arrow cichlid reaches the trade only occasionally — usually through specialist cichlid societies and breeders maintaining small captive lines, not the mainstream ornamental market. Anyone who keeps one takes on a real conservation responsibility, and wild collection should be avoided entirely.

Water: match Lake Apoyo — warm (81–84 °F), alkaline (pH 8.0–8.5), and moderately hard to hard (10–15 °dH). The lake runs far higher in dissolved solids than most tap water (the 1976 Barlow, Baylis & Roberts analysis recorded about 2,680 ppm total dissolved solids), but keepers report success at ordinary hard-tap hardness without recreating that extreme; the non-negotiable is to avoid soft, acidic water, which is the opposite of this fish's lake. Stable temperature matters more than an exact number, and good mechanical and biological filtration suits a fish from a large, clear crater lake.

Tank: give it room. Males reach around 6.5 in standard length in the wild, and this is a territorial cichlid that defends space hard, especially when spawning — a pair alone needs at least 80 US gal, and more is better. Lay out open mid-water swimming room plus a section of stable rockwork with crevices near the substrate for a nest; sand or fine gravel is fine, and a spawning pair will rearrange it and uproot most plants regardless.

Tankmates: not a community fish. Breeding pairs turn intensely aggressive and will batter or kill anything that approaches the nest. Outside breeding it can share a large tank with other robust Central American cichlids of similar temperament, but small or placid fish will suffer, and male-on-male aggression is a genuine risk — a single proven pair kept alone is the practical, ethical arrangement.

Feeding: straightforward. It readily takes quality cichlid pellets, frozen or thawed silversides and other small fish, krill and meaty foods; skip feeder fish (unnecessary and a disease risk) and heavy plant matter, since both its trophic level and its natural prey point to a protein-rich diet.

Breeding in captivity follows the biparental substrate-spawning pattern covered above. Because the species is so seldom available and its wild population so precarious, successful captive spawns are genuinely valuable — document them and pass fry through cichlid-society networks rather than releasing them to the general trade. Overall difficulty is best rated intermediate to advanced: the husbandry is not hard for an experienced cichlid keeper, but the rarity, the aggression, and the sensitivity to soft or acidic water rule it out for beginners. The real challenge is finding one at all.

Conservation

Amphilophus zaliosus is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List (criterion B1ab(iii)), assessed on 22 July 2019 and published in 2020 by Lyons, Contreras MacBeath, Lalèyè and Snoeks; it already held that status in 2009, and its population trend is recorded as decreasing. The listing is not about fishing, which the species barely faces, but about a vanishingly small range — one 22 km2 crater lake, with every individual in the same place. It is not CITES-listed (Not Evaluated) and may be taken intermittently for the ornamental trade, but the IUCN names the dominant threats as invasive and translocated fishes, chiefly Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and the predatory bigmouth sleeper Gobiomorus dormitor.

The mechanism is well documented. Introduced Nile tilapia have grazed down Apoyo's Chara beds — the alga that structured near-shore habitat for snails and juvenile fish — while the translocated Gobiomorus dormitor preys on native fry, and the lake's cichlids, evolved in isolation, put up a deficient defence against a predator they never knew (Lehtonen, McCrary & Meyer 2012). On top of the invasions, observers report falling water levels and spreading residential and commercial development along the shore, with knock-on changes to water chemistry, even though Apoyo lies inside a designated nature reserve. What is at stake is unusual: Barluenga and colleagues' 2006 Nature study made Apoyo one of the most convincing known cases of sympatric speciation, with the arrow cichlid evolving in place from a single colonization by Amphilophus citrinellus in under about 10,000 years. Yet as of the assessment there is no recovery plan, no systematic monitoring, no protected-area coverage and no invasive-species control aimed at this fish — an evolutionary landmark left largely unmanaged.
