Taxonomy & naming
Sven O. Kullander described Apistogramma juruensis in 1986, in his monograph Cichlid Fishes of the Amazon River Drainage of Peru (Swedish Museum of Natural History). The epithet is a plain toponym: it marks the Rio Juruá, a white-water tributary of the Solimões (upper Amazon), and implies no relationship to any other species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the holotype as ZUEC 1374, in the zoology collection of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP), collected by C.F.B. Haddad and J.R. Santos in 1982; paratypes are held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (NRM), the Zoology Museum of São Paulo (MZUSP) and the Manaus institute (INPA). The type locality is the Rio Juruá drainage at Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil. The name has stood unchallenged since — the Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, the IUCN, and Kullander's own treatment in the 2003 Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America all accept Apistogramma juruensis Kullander, 1986 as valid, with no synonyms.
Apistogramma, within the family Cichlidae (subfamily Cichlinae, tribe Geophagini), is the most species-rich cichlid genus in South America, and specialists and hobbyists alike sort it into informal 'species-groups' to keep it tractable. The Cichlid Room Companion profile (curated by Mike Wise, 2008) and Wise's widely used classification both place Apistogramma juruensis in the cacatuoides-group — which matters in practice, because its closest look-alikes are the very fish it is confused with in the trade. One misconception is worth correcting head-on: casual sources sometimes link Apistogramma juruensis to a 'regani-' or 'gibbiceps-group' affinity, but the authoritative placement is the cacatuoides-group, and the epithet is geographic, not a claim of kinship. The genus name is a small joke at the group's expense — from the Greek apistos ('inconstant') and gramma ('line'), roughly 'of doubtful markings', a nod to the variably developed lateral lines that frustrated nineteenth-century taxonomists.
Morphology
Apistogramma juruensis is small and comparatively plain for a genus famous for colour. Dominant males carry the raised front dorsal-fin rays typical of the cacatuoides-group, a dark lateral band running the length of the body, and broad, wavy stripes across the belly. The diagnostic feature — the one specialists use to separate the real fish from impostors — is the tail. As Mike Wise notes, a true Apistogramma juruensis shows a distinctly separate spot at the base of the caudal peduncle, set off from the lateral band, together with regularly spaced vertical rows of spots across the caudal fin; its abdominal stripes are also broader than on the look-alikes. Wise stresses that this separated caudal spot is visible even on immature fish and never merges into the lateral band as the fish grows, which makes it a reliable field mark rather than something that only appears with age.
Reported size is a genuine muddle, and we flag it rather than repeat a database figure as fact. FishBase and Kullander's 2003 checklist give a body length of just 1 in — but that comes from a small preserved type series and is almost certainly not the adult size of the living fish. Cacatuoides-group males commonly reach roughly 2.5–3 in in total length, females noticeably smaller, and there is no biological reason to treat Apistogramma juruensis as a true micro-dwarf. Like essentially all Apistogramma, it is strongly sexually dimorphic: males are larger, longer-finned and more boldly marked, while females are smaller and, when guarding eggs, turn an intense lemon-yellow crossed by black markings.
Habitat
The species is narrowly distributed and, on present evidence, endemic to Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN restrict it to the upper Rio Juruá drainage in Acre, around Cruzeiro do Sul; Mike Wise pins it more precisely to the middle Rio Juruá near Cruzeiro. This is deep western Amazonia, close to the Peruvian border but — a point worth stressing, because the trade routinely gets it wrong — on the Brazilian side. Fish offered as wild-caught 'juruensis' from Peru are almost always something else. GBIF holds only about two dozen records, most of them museum type material, which fits the fish's reputation as rarely documented rather than genuinely scarce in the water; the IUCN assessment describes it as naturally infrequent and not abundant.
No in-situ chemistry or depth has been published specifically for Apistogramma juruensis, so its biotope is read from its group and the lowland streams it inhabits — values we flag as group-typical inference, not species-level measurement. The cacatuoides-group is associated with white-water and clear-water habitats: the silty, near-neutral to slightly acidic streams and river margins of the upper Amazon, rather than the tea-black, strongly acidic igarapés favoured by blackwater Apistogramma such as Apistogramma bitaeniata. Expect shallow, sheltered margins with leaf litter, submerged wood and a sand or silt bottom — the structured, low-flow microhabitat where small cichlids find cover and spawning caves, realistically only a metre or two deep. FishBase records a temperature range of about 72–84 °F (72–84 °F), consistent with lowland Amazonian streams; a pH band of roughly 6.0–7.5 reflects the slightly acidic to near-neutral white- and clear-water of the group rather than a published reading for this fish.
Feeding
No published diet study exists for Apistogramma juruensis, so its trophic ecology is read from its anatomy and its close relatives. Like other small Apistogramma, it is a benthic micro-predator: a fish that works the leaf litter and the top film of the substrate, picking out aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and taking the organic odds and ends that collect among sunken leaves. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.1 — squarely a small carnivore/omnivore rather than a herbivore or a top predator.
In the community it sits in the middle of the food web: abundant where it occurs, short-lived and fast-maturing, converting tiny invertebrates into food for larger fishes and fish-eating birds. FishBase rates its resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time under fifteen months — the profile of an animal that breeds early, often and in numbers, which is exactly what keepers of the wider cacatuoides-group report.
Mating
Apistogramma juruensis has the harem-polygynous social structure of the cacatuoides-group: a single dominant male holds a large territory that overlaps the smaller, defended territories of several females, courting and spawning with each in turn. Pair formation happens within those female spaces, and once a female is in spawning condition she colours up to the group's intense breeding yellow-and-black and leads courtship at her chosen cavity. Males are larger and more aggressive but invest little beyond territory defence and fertilisation; the female does the close work of nest preparation and brood care.
Direct observation of the true species at this stage is scarce, precisely because so few aquarists have had genuine fish, so much of what can be said is drawn from the near-identical relatives that flood the trade in its place. In those fish the pattern is consistent and well documented — territorial males, cave-holding females, and the brief, ritualised courtship typical of substrate-brooding dwarf cichlids — and there is no reason to think Apistogramma juruensis departs from it.
Breeding
Apistogramma juruensis is a cave-spawning substrate brooder. FishBase records the pattern shared across the genus: eggs are attached to the ceiling of a sheltered cavity — a crevice, a root tangle, a half-buried shell, or in aquaria a coconut hut or an inverted flowerpot — and the female alone tends and fans the clutch, then guards the wriggling larvae and free-swimming fry while the male patrols the wider territory. Sexual maturity comes fast, at roughly three to four months, and resilience is high, consistent with frequent spawning and quick generations.
Species-specific clutch and fry data have not been published for Apistogramma juruensis, so figures here are flagged as group-typical. Keepers of its near-identical relatives, and of the closely associated undescribed Apistogramma sp. 'Cruzeiro' from the same corner of the Juruá, report broods that can exceed fifty fry even from a first-time female, and find the fish no harder to spawn than the familiar cockatoo cichlid. Tellingly, Mike Wise has argued on the Apistogramma community forums that Apistogramma juruensis is uncommon in the hobby not because it is delicate but because its corner of the upper Juruá is simply too far from Brazilian exporters to collect commercially — easy to reach by plane, a long haul by boat, and not worth the expense — and that when fish of this group do reach tanks, they behave as typical, productive cacatuoides-group dwarfs.
In the aquarium
Very few aquarists have ever kept the genuine article, and that is the first thing to say. As the Breeding section explains, commercial fish sold under this name are overwhelmingly Apistogramma cacatuoides or the undescribed 'black-chin' form; true Apistogramma juruensis almost never reaches the hobby, because the upper Juruá around Cruzeiro do Sul is too remote from Brazilian export routes to supply it reliably. If you believe you have real fish — wild-caught, identified by the separated caudal spot and banded caudal-fin rows described in specialist accounts — the guidance below applies. For everyone else, it is sound care for any closely related cacatuoides-group dwarf from the same region, and we note where it generalises from that group rather than from species-specific reports.
Water: as a white- and clear-water fish rather than a blackwater one, Apistogramma juruensis does not need the extremely soft, highly acidic water that Amazonian blackwater Apistogramma require. A pH of 6.0–7.0 is safe, and moderately soft water up to roughly 10 °dH is acceptable, though 5–8 °dH makes conditioning and spawning easier. Keep the temperature within the 72–84 °F band FishBase records, with 75–81 °F a good working target; a modest warming to 79–81 °F reliably nudges conditioning. Well-filtered water with a low nitrate load matters more than chasing exact numbers, and a 30–40 % weekly water change is non-negotiable.
Tank: 15–20 US gal (about a 60 × 15.5 in footprint) suits a single pair; for the natural harem — one male with two or three females, each defending a small territory around her own cave — a longer 20–25 US gal (31.5–35.5 in) gives the females room to co-exist without chronic conflict. Fine sand or small-grain substrate is strongly preferred: this is a benthic micro-predator that sifts the substrate surface, and coarse gravel blocks that behaviour and can abrade the ventral fins. Cover the floor with dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves are the standard), add submerged wood, smooth pebbles and a few low plants such as Cryptocoryne or Java fern at the margins, and give each female at least one cave — a coconut shell half, a small clay pot on its side, or a commercial cichlid cave. The dim, structured tank that results is not just close to the natural habitat; it is the single biggest factor in reducing inter-female aggression and in persuading ripe females to spawn.
Tankmates: a shoal of eight to twelve small mid-water dither fish — ember tetras or rummy-nose tetras — reduces skittishness and normalises activity low in the tank. Avoid any cichlid other than the harem itself; even gentle apistogrammas of other species disrupt territory and readily hybridise. Corydoras catfish share the substrate happily, but Corydoras run large and energetic for a small dwarf-cichlid tank, so Otocinclus or smaller Corydoras species fit better. Exclude predators, anything big enough to see a 2.5–3 in Apistogramma as food, and restless mid-water swimmers that harry the female at her cave.
Breeding and mistakes: condition both sexes on quality live or frozen foods — frozen Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and bloodworm, with small live foods where available — over a few weeks. Spawning follows the harem pattern from the Mating and Breeding sections: the female leads the male into her cave, lays on the ceiling or a smooth wall, then becomes fiercely defensive of a territory well beyond the cave, so do not rearrange the tank during the brood cycle. Remove the male if the tank is small and he is harassing her; in a larger, well-structured tank he can co-exist at a distance. Fry are free-swimming in ten to fourteen days at mid-range temperature and take micro-worm and Artemia nauplii from day one. The common mistakes are pushing pH too low on the assumption that any Amazonian Apistogramma needs blackwater (this cacatuoides-group fish does not), running the tank too warm for long stretches (above 82–84 °F stresses adults and speeds senescence), and underestimating female aggression once a brood is present — a small tank with two females and no visual barriers invites escalating violence no matter how calm things looked before spawning.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma juruensis as Least Concern (assessment dated 7 November 2018, published 2022 by Brazil's Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, ICMBio, and reviewed by P. Reis). The reasoning is straightforward: the species is endemic to the upper Rio Juruá basin in Acre, is naturally infrequent and not very abundant, and faces no identified significant threat. Ornamental collection is legal in Brazil, but the assessors explicitly judged it no meaningful pressure here, precisely because the area is so hard to collect in — the fish's rarity in the trade is a logistics problem, not over-harvest. It is not known from any protected area, and the assessment flags research on its population and life history as the main need. (Older hobby accounts, including the 2008 Cichlid Room Companion page, still list it as 'not evaluated' — they simply predate the assessment.)
In the wider Amazonian picture this is the common, reassuring case rather than the alarming one. Most Amazonian cichlids are Least Concern or have never been formally evaluated, and the pressures they face are diffuse — habitat change and ornamental-trade collection — rather than the fishery collapse seen in the African rift lakes. The broader basin literature (Kullander's contributions to the 2003 Check List, and the Neotropical-fish ecology synthesised by Lowe-McConnell) frames the real long-term risks for the upper-Amazon white-water tributaries as deforestation, agricultural expansion, sedimentation and proposed dams that alter flow and connectivity. For a small, range-restricted, leaf-litter fish like Apistogramma juruensis, watershed-scale disturbance in the upper Juruá would matter far more than any aquarium demand. The accurate summary is the plain one: the species itself is Least Concern, while the basin that holds it is under mounting strain.
