Taxonomy & naming
Hermann Meinken described Apistogramma geisleri in 1971, in a short paper in Senckenbergiana Biologica (volume 52, parts 1-2, pages 35-40) that also redescribed Apistogramma borellii — both, he noted, from the Amazon basin. The name is often misquoted with a date of 1965, the year Meinken named the related dwarf Apistogrammoides pucallpaensis, but Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, FishBase, GBIF and the IUCN all fix the authority as Meinken, 1971. The holotype (Senckenberg Museum, Frankfurt, SMF 10617) and two paratypes (SMF 10618-19) came from the Rio Curuçamba near Óbidos, on the lower Amazon in Pará. The species has never carried a junior synonym and has stood as valid under its original combination from the day it was named.
Sven Kullander redescribed it in 1980 as part of his wider work on Amazonian Apistogramma, and that treatment — with his 2003 checklist chapter — remains the standard reference. In the hobby-and-literature classification of the genus assembled by Mike Wise and collaborators (apistogramma.com / TomC's Apisto-sites), Apistogramma geisleri sits in the Apistogramma-regani-group, the most widely distributed of the species-groups and the one filling most Amazon tributaries. Its finer affinities are unsettled: the IUCN assessment explicitly flags a strong morphological resemblance between Apistogramma geisleri and the wide-ranging Apistogramma eunotus, which blurs distributional boundaries between the two and leaves the exact placement of geisleri within the group open. The honest summary is that this is a poorly studied member of a large, taxonomically fluid group, and that further collecting and molecular work could refine — or unsettle — its identity.
Morphology
Apistogramma geisleri is small even by the standards of its genus. The maximum recorded length is about 1 in standard length (Kullander 2003) — a little over an inch — putting it among the smaller Apistogramma rather than the deeper-bodied regani-group fishes that approach 3.5 in. The diagnostic detail lives almost entirely in Meinken's original description and Kullander's 1980 redescription; full in-life colour accounts in the modern hobby literature are sparse, a reflection of how rarely the fish is collected or kept.
In general form it is a typical regani-group Apistogramma — an elongate, laterally compressed little cichlid of moderate depth, carrying the genus's lateral band and dark markings. The most telling published remark about its appearance is the IUCN note that it is hard to separate from Apistogramma eunotus on morphology alone: the two are close enough that where a fish was caught helps decide which it is. Sexual dimorphism is presumed to follow the genus norm — males larger, with more produced finnage and stronger colour than the smaller females — but no detailed account of geisleri's breeding dress or sex differences has been published, and we decline to invent one. The data here are genuinely thin.
Habitat
Apistogramma geisleri is endemic to Brazil and confined to the lower Amazon. Its type locality is the Rio Curuçamba near Óbidos, in the Rio Trombetas drainage of Pará; collection records also place it in the Rio Urubu basin near Itacoatiara, in neighbouring Amazonas. FishBase summarises the range as the Amazon basin around the lower Trombetas, and the Catalog of Fishes gives simply the lower Amazon River basin, Brazil. This is a fish of the great river's northern lower-course tributaries, not of the upper Rio Negro and Rio Branco country sometimes attached to it.
In the wild it is described as naturally infrequent — genuinely uncommon rather than merely under-collected. Like other small Apistogramma it lives on quiet, structured margins near the bottom, within a temperature range FishBase gives as roughly 21-29 degrees Celsius. Beyond that, in-situ chemistry tied to geisleri is scarce, but its home waters are well characterised at the basin scale: the Rio Trombetas is a clearwater river, and central- and eastern-Amazon clearwater tributaries are typically warm, soft and slightly acidic — Duncan and Fernandes (2010) measured Amazonian clearwater at a mean pH near 6.5 (range about 6 to 8) with very low conductivity. A pH band of roughly 6.0-7.0 is the sensible expectation for the soft clearwater this fish occupies, though no reading tied directly to a geisleri collecting site has been published; treat it as basin-typical rather than species-specific.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Apistogramma geisleri has been published. FishBase places it at an estimated trophic level near 3.2 — a figure drawn from the size and feeding habits of close relatives rather than from gut contents of geisleri itself. On that basis, and by analogy with the rest of the genus, it is best read as a small benthic micro-predator: a fish that works the substrate and leaf litter for tiny invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms and other meiofauna — picking and sifting at the bottom as dwarf cichlids do. In the food web of its lower-Amazon tributaries it would hold the same modest niche as its congeners, a small predator of small prey and, in turn, forage for larger fishes. As elsewhere on this page, the specifics are inferred from the genus, not documented for the species.
Mating
The pre-spawning behaviour of Apistogramma geisleri has not been described in any detail, in the scientific or the hobby literature — a consequence of how seldom the fish is kept and bred. What FishBase does record — eggs deposited on the ceiling of a cave and tended by the female — marks it as a female-tending cave spawner, and that single fact carries weight for its mating system. Across the female-tending cave-spawning Apistogramma the usual arrangement is haremic, or facultatively polygynous: a male holds and defends a larger territory overlapping the smaller, cave-centred territories of one or more females, the females doing the close brood care while he patrols the wider ground and courts further partners. It is reasonable to expect Apistogramma geisleri to follow that regani-group template, but no study has confirmed the particulars — pair-bond duration, courtship displays, the degree of harem polygyny — for this species, and we do not assert what has not been observed.
Breeding
Apistogramma geisleri is a substrate-brooding cave spawner with maternal care. Citing the breeding literature for the genus, FishBase records that the eggs are attached to the ceiling of a cave and that the female tends the eggs and larvae — the classic Apistogramma mode, in which the female chooses and cleans a concealed cavity (a crevice, a hollow under wood, or in aquaria a small cave or inverted vessel), lays an adhesive clutch on its roof, then guards and fans the eggs and the resulting wrigglers largely alone while the male holds the surrounding territory. No clutch count, egg- or fry-development timeline, or spawning trigger specific to geisleri appears in the accessible literature, so those figures are left unrecorded rather than estimated. Given the very small adult size, clutches are likely to be modest — congeners commonly lay around 40-80 eggs — but that is a genus-typical expectation, not a measured figure. The mode is known in outline and consistent with the genus; the numbers, for this particular fish, are not.
In the aquarium
Apistogramma geisleri is rarely offered and should be treated as uncommon even by dwarf-cichlid standards — never a trade staple, and usually sourced through specialist importers or the small circle of European and North American breeders who work with obscure regani-group Apistogramma. Approach it as you would any under-documented dwarf: build the tank around what is known of its wild water and fill the gaps with sensible genus-wide generalisations.
Tank: a well-planted 15–20 US gal aquarium suits one male with one or two females. The fish is tiny, so volume buys water-quality buffering and room for each female to hold her own cave rather than swimming space. Give it fine sand to sift, at least one snug cave or hollow per female (clay caves, coconut-shell halves, flowerpot shards), a deep layer of dried leaf litter for shelter and gentle softening, and dim, plant-shaded light.
Water: the non-negotiable. Its Rio Trombetas home is warm, very soft clearwater, and hard or alkaline tap water tends to leave these fish chronically stressed, spawn-shy and disease-prone. Aim for pH 6.0-6.8, hardness below roughly 5 degrees dH, and 75–82 °F — the 70–84 °F on record is the wild thermal range, not licence to keep the tank cool. Reverse-osmosis water remineralised to soft, or peat-conditioned soft water, is the practical route, and stability matters as much as the exact figure.
Social and tankmates: run a harem of one male to two or three females rather than a single pair, since a lone female with nowhere to retreat can be harassed to death. Small, fast upper-water dithers — Hyphessobrycon tetras or Nannostomus pencilfish from the same region — settle the cichlids; avoid large or boisterous fish, and other bottom-dwelling cichlids, which the tiny adults cannot compete with. Females sex out smaller and rounder, intensifying to a yellow-and-black guarding dress in spawning condition.
Common mistakes are the predictable ones: untreated tap water, too few caves for the females to hold territory, and pairing fish instead of running a harem. Given how seldom it reaches the trade, anyone who breeds it successfully genuinely helps keep it in circulation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Apistogramma geisleri as Least Concern, in an assessment by Brazil's Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), last assessed on 7 November 2018 and published in 2022. The reasoning is straightforward: although the species is endemic to a restricted part of the lower Amazon — the Rio Curuçamba in the Trombetas basin (Pará) and the Rio Urubu basin near Itacoatiara (Amazonas) — and is naturally infrequent, the assessors found no significant threats and so declined to place it in a threatened category. The population trend is listed as unknown. It carries no CITES listing and is not evaluated under the CMS.
The species sees limited use in the ornamental trade, within Brazil and internationally, though it is far from a common aquarium fish. There is no dedicated conservation programme for it, and it is not known from any protected area; the IUCN flags the basics — taxonomy, population size and distribution, and life history — as the main gaps. The broader pressures on lower-Amazon tributaries (deforestation, agricultural expansion, shifts in water quality) form the backdrop for any fish of this region, but none has been documented as an active threat to Apistogramma geisleri. For so poorly known a fish the message is watchful uncertainty rather than alarm: uncommon, narrowly distributed, but not — on present evidence — in danger.
