Taxonomy & naming
The species was described in 1974 by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas, as Chromidotilapia finleyi, in her survey of the freshwater fishes of the Mungo and Meme rivers and Lakes Kotto, Mboandong and Soden in west Cameroon (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology series, volume 26). The type locality is the Nyoke River, a tributary of the Mungo River southeast of Lake Kotto; the holotype is held at the Natural History Museum, London, registered BMNH 1973.5.14.553, with a long series of paratypes from the same collection. For a quarter-century the fish sat in Chromidotilapia, a catch-all for these West African pair-bonding cichlids. In 2001 the Austrian cichlid specialist Anton Lamboj revised the Chromidotilapia batesii/finleyi complex and split off a new genus, Benitochromis, to hold finleyi and several allied species; the combination Benitochromis finleyi (Trewavas, 1974) has been the valid name ever since (Catalog of Fishes; Stiassny, Teugels & Hopkins 2007). The genus name comes not from this fish's own range but from the Benito River in Río Muni, Equatorial Guinea, the type locality of the genus's type species Benitochromis batesii, compounded with the ancient suffix -chromis long used in cichlid genus names. As erected and later expanded, Benitochromis is a small group of Lower Guinea endemics; it now contains roughly six described species (finleyi, batesii, conjunctus, nigrodorsalis, riomuniensis and ufermanni), and aquarists have long suspected further undescribed forms hide under the trade labels 'finleyi' and 'batesii'. A practical taxonomic wrinkle worth flagging: because the genus is so uniform and the colour forms blur together, several Benitochromis have been imported and sold under one another's names — most notably the coastal species later named Benitochromis nigrodorsalis, which moved through the trade for years as 'Chromidotilapia finleyi Moliwe'. The specific epithet honours Lee Finley, a long-time American aquarium hobbyist who, in Trewavas's own account, generously supplied the photograph used in the original description.
Morphology
Benitochromis finleyi is a modestly sized, fusiform cichlid. FishBase records a maximum of 3 in standard length (the body without the tail fin) from Lamboj's revision, but that figure measures only preserved museum material; trade and aquarium sources consistently describe well-grown fish at roughly 4–4.5 in in total length, and that larger figure is the one a keeper should plan around. The body carries 14–16 dorsal-fin spines and 8–10 soft rays, with three anal spines — a fin formula typical of the genus. Colour is where the fish earns its keepers: the cheeks, gill covers and forward flanks shimmer with iridescent blue, set against a warm olive-to-brassy ground. Lamboj's diagnosis stresses what finleyi lacks as much as what it shows — the dorsal-fin membrane is pale, without the dense black band seen in some relatives (and named outright in Benitochromis nigrodorsalis); there are normally no strong vertical bars on the flanks, and usually no flank markings at all, though a stressed fish may briefly show two faint horizontal bands. Males often carry a scatter of reddish spots in the caudal-fin membrane, but these never flood the whole fin. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle, which trips up new keepers: males grow somewhat larger and more intensely coloured, while ripe females are rounder and fuller-bodied, and in this genus females can actually be the more boldly patterned sex during breeding. The safest sexing comes with maturity and condition rather than from any single fin or spot.
Habitat
This is a Lower Guinea endemic with one of the tighter ranges of any kept cichlid: it is confined to the Mungo and Meme river drainages and the immediately surrounding region of western Cameroon. Old reports from Bioko (Fernando Poo) in Equatorial Guinea, and from the lower Ntem in Cameroon, have never been confirmed and are treated as unreliable. Within that range it is a fish of running fresh water rather than open lakes — the Cichlid Room Companion records it from creeks flowing into the Mungo and from river pools, the small, shaded, leaf-littered habitats characteristic of the West African coastal forest belt. The in-situ water is soft and acidic to neutral: FishBase and the IUCN assessment give a pH range of about 4.8 to 7.0 and a hardness of roughly 1 to 7 dH, with reported temperatures around 73–77 °F, cooler than the rift-lake cichlids most aquarists know. No published study reports a depth band for the species; as a small fish of forest creeks and pools it lives in shallow water, on the order of the first metre or two, and the value given here reflects that habitat type rather than a measured figure. One trait keepers note, and the trade confirms, is that despite this soft-water origin the fish is unusually adaptable in captivity and tolerates harder, more neutral water than its native streams would suggest.
Feeding
Benitochromis finleyi is a benthic omnivore and substrate picker rather than a specialist. The Cichlid Room Companion characterises it as detritivorous and omnivorous, working the bottom for whatever the leaf litter and sediment yield; FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.3, the middle of the food web, consistent with a fish that takes both animal and plant material. In the wild its diet is best inferred from habitat and from close relatives — small invertebrates such as insect larvae and crustaceans picked from the substrate, supplemented by detritus and the aufwuchs of submerged wood and leaves. In the aquarium that generalist mouth translates into an easy fish to feed: keepers report it takes flakes, pellets and frozen and live foods readily, and a varied diet leaning on small live and frozen invertebrates is what conditions it for spawning. There is no evidence of the dental or jaw specialisation seen in the rift-lake trophic specialists; this is an opportunist of the forest-stream bottom.
Mating
Outside of breeding, Benitochromis are sociable — Lamboj notes that non-breeding fish, both juveniles and adults, often gather in loose groups of up to twenty. Reproduction changes everything. The species forms pair bonds, but in this genus the bond is notoriously weak, and that fragility is the single defining fact of keeping the fish. Pairs that court and spawn happily can turn on each other without warning: keepers describe a male that holds and harasses the female after she has taken up the eggs, sometimes driving her into hiding and forcing her to spit the clutch, and pairs are widely compared to pike cichlids for their tendency toward sudden, violent 'divorces.' The experienced answer is to let fish choose their own partners — raising a group and allowing a harmonious pair to form naturally, rather than throwing a male and female together — and to break the male's focus on the female with robust dither fish such as Congo tetras or another tough cichlid, so his aggression has somewhere else to go. Even then, a pair that has spawned successfully several times may eventually fail, and the cooler-headed breeders keep the option to separate the fish on hand.
Breeding
Benitochromis finleyi is a biparental, pair-bonding, ovophilic (egg-brooding) mouthbrooder with delayed uptake — a mode worth unpacking, because it is the species' most remarkable trait and the reason the hint that Benitochromis are 'cave-spawning then mouthbrooding' is only half right for this fish. The eggs are first laid on an open surface, a flat rock or a cleared patch of substrate (not inside a cave, as the congener Benitochromis batesii does), and only then are they taken up into the mouth — the 'delayed uptake' that distinguishes this style from cichlids that brood from the moment of laying. What follows is the genuinely unusual part: both parents brood, and they share the load by passing the clutch back and forth, transferring the eggs and larvae from mouth to mouth several times a day. Keepers and Lamboj alike describe the transfer as a head-on ritual — the parents face each other, the holding fish jerks its head and wiggles its pectoral fins, and the clutch is propelled into the partner's mouth; inexperienced pairs can take an hour to manage it, while practised ones do it in seconds. Spawns are modest — hobby observations in the genus run on the order of forty eggs, with FishBase rating the fish a low-fecundity species. Young are free-swimming in a little under two weeks (roughly ten to twelve days at typical temperatures) and are then guarded by both parents for some weeks, often taken back into the mouth at night. It is this shared, mouth-to-mouth brooding that makes the fish a prize for advanced keepers — and the same weak pair bond that makes getting there difficult.
In the aquarium
Benitochromis finleyi is a fish for a patient, experienced keeper rather than a beginner, and the single factor that determines success or failure is aggression management. The minimum useful tank for a pair is 25 US gal (roughly 80 × 35 × 14 in), but experienced keepers invariably recommend something longer — 47 in or more — so that the fish can establish a territory at one end without controlling the entire tank. A planted, heavily decorated layout with driftwood, tangles of root, and a fine-grained dark substrate mimics the leaf-littered forest-stream floor from which the fish comes, dampens aggression by breaking sight lines, and shows the fish's iridescence to best effect. Flat stones and broad leaves (live or dried Catappa) serve double duty as aesthetic elements and potential spawning sites.
Water chemistry should stay soft and on the acidic side: a pH of 6.0–7.0 and total hardness under 8 dH is the practical working range, with 6.5–6.8 and 3–5 dH being the sweet spot where the fish colours up and pairs condition most reliably. Temperature should be held at 73–77 °F; this is a cooler-water fish than most West African cichlids found in the trade, and chronic warmth above 81 °F stresses it. Filtration should be gentle enough to avoid strong turbulence — the natural habitats are slow pools and low-gradient forest streams — but the water must be clean: Benitochromis are intolerant of dissolved organic build-up, and poor water quality is the most commonly reported cause of unexplained fish losses. Weekly water changes of at least 25–30 % with well-conditioned, soft water are considered non-negotiable by dedicated keepers.
The weak pair bond described in the mating section is not a theoretical concern — it is the single commonest reason keepers fail to breed the fish. Throwing a random male and female together in a bare tank almost always results in one killing the other. The standard approach is to raise four to six juveniles together, allow natural pairing, then move the bonded pair into a dedicated breeding setup. Even then, the male's tendency to redirect aggression at the female after spawning — once she has taken up the clutch and he can no longer fertilise — makes it wise to furnish the tank with robust dither fish: a shoal of hardy West African tetras (Congo tetras work well) or other similarly sized fish absorbs enough of the male's attention to take pressure off the female. Some keepers install a removable divider and are prepared to separate the pair if the male becomes dangerously persistent.
Tankmates are best kept from the same biozone: Congo tetras, smaller West African barbs, or dwarf cichlids of similar water requirements (West African species rather than South American) can co-exist without raising the temperature of the tank's social dynamic. Avoid combining Benitochromis with other chromidotilapiines unless the tank is genuinely large, as inter-species aggression is predictable. Slow, long-finned fish or small neon-sized tetras that cannot take a bite are unsuitable and should be excluded.
Feeding in the aquarium is straightforward by comparison. The fish accepts high-quality flake and micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, cyclops and similar invertebrate foods without hesitation. A varied diet weighted toward small live and frozen invertebrates — earthworm pieces, bloodworm, brine shrimp — is recommended in the weeks leading up to a spawning attempt, as it conditions both sexes and appears to strengthen the pair bond. The fish is not difficult to feed; the difficulty lies entirely in the social dimension of keeping it.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Benitochromis finleyi as Endangered (criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), in an assessment by T. Moelants dated 16 February 2009 and published in 2010 — a designation the Red List itself now flags as needing updating. The listing rests on the species' very small, fragmented range: a Lower Guinea endemic known from at most three locations in the Mungo and Meme drainages, with both its extent of occurrence and area of occupancy small enough to qualify. The named threats are specific and local. The streams of the upper Mungo basin run through intensively farmed land, and the assessors single out sedimentation and agricultural pollution from banana plantations as degrading the habitat; tellingly, the assessment notes that the area has been heavily surveyed without the fish being refound, a worrying sign for a species this localised. There is no commercial fishery for it and no CITES listing; collection for the aquarium trade is small-scale. Because finleyi is a narrow-range forest-stream endemic rather than a wide-ranging generalist, the basin-level pressures bearing on it are precisely those of land-use change — deforestation, plantation runoff and the siltation of clear forest creeks — rather than the warming-and-fishery story that dominates the great rift lakes. That same vulnerability is why the species has become a focus of hobby conservation efforts such as the C.A.R.E.S. preservation program, which encourages aquarists to maintain self-sustaining captive lines of at-risk cichlids; for a fish whose wild stronghold is a few squeezed Cameroonian streams, the captive population is not a luxury but a genuine hedge.
