Taxonomy & naming
Chalinochromis sp. "Bifrenatus" is a hobby and database label for an undescribed Chalinochromis. The quotation marks and "sp." mark it as a working name, not a validated species, so no authority or year is attached. tanganyika.si files it as 'bifrenatus striped'. The atlas's own article on Julidochromis popelini refers to "the undescribed Tanzanian 'bifrenatus' form" and describes it with reversed size dimorphism. The form is undescribed, and its identity and range are not documented in the sources behind the atlas.
Morphology
Imperial Tropicals describes the genus pattern of bridle-like marks on the face, and says that in this form the markings continue along the body as two horizontal stripes on the lateral line, rather than the series of dots seen in other Chalinochromis. The seller also says breeding males can show blue fin edges and a yellow body. These are the seller's statements; the atlas has no measurements for the form.
Habitat
tanganyika.si records the form at 11 collection points on the Tanzanian shore, including Cape Mpimbwe, Katondo Point, Kerenge Island, Mkinga, Mswa Point, Mtosi, Mvuna Island and Namansi. Where coordinates exist they fall in the southeastern part of the lake, roughly between 7.3 and 8.0 degrees south. Like other Chalinochromis, it is a fish of rock piles and boulder shores, away from the sand.
Feeding
Not documented for this form. Genus-level only: Chalinochromis are rock-dwelling cichlids that pick small invertebrates and algae-associated food from the rock surface. Imperial Tropicals does not state a diet for this form.
Mating
Not documented for this form. Genus-level only: Chalinochromis form pairs that hold a rock crevice or cave as a territory. The seller says a small group kept together will pair off and defend a spawning site.
Breeding
Imperial Tropicals says a pair uses a flowerpot or cave and lays 40-60 eggs. Genus-level only: Chalinochromis are cave-spawning substrate brooders with biparental care. The clutch figure is the seller's, not a measured value from the atlas's sources.
In the aquarium
Imperial Tropicals lists the form as a mid-sized Tanganyikan cichlid for rockwork tanks. Standard Tanganyika husbandry applies: hard alkaline water, plenty of caves and stacked rock, and a group that is allowed to pair off. Chalinochromis are territorial and can be hard on tankmates and each other in small tanks.
Conservation
An undescribed form has no IUCN category, and none is claimed here. Population and range data for it are not documented in the atlas's sources.
