Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the Egyptian ichthyologist Imam Abdel-Ghany Ahmed Mekkawy in 1995 as Tilapia ismailiaensis, in the Bulletin of the Faculty of Science of Assiut University. The type series was collected from the Ismailia Canal at Ismailia, in the eastern Nile Delta region of Egypt; the holotype (BMNH 1993.9.23.6) and two paratypes (BMNH 1993.9.23.7-8) were deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. Catalog of Fishes fixes the type locality precisely at roughly 30°30'N, 32°20'E, about 75 mi northeast of Cairo. A point of genuine confusion attaches to the name: in the same 1995 work Mekkawy erected a second, entirely separate species he also called "ismailiaensis" but placed in Oreochromis (the mouthbrooding tilapias). The two are not the same fish, and the Coptodon species treated here is the substrate-spawning one allied to the redbelly tilapia. When Andreas Dunz and Ulrich Schliewen published their molecular phylogeny and revised classification of the haplotilapiine cichlids formerly lumped under "Tilapia" (2013), they broke that old wastebasket genus apart; the African substrate-spawning, herbivorous lineage that includes Tilapia zillii was placed in the resurrected genus Coptodon Gervais, 1848, and Tilapia ismailiaensis followed its relatives in, becoming the current Coptodon ismailiaensis (Mekkawy, 1995). Mekkawy's own diagnosis explicitly contrasted the new species, morphologically and in muscle-protein (allozyme) patterns, against Tilapia zillii taken from the same stretch of canal — that comparison is the entire basis for the species' separation. Because no modern revision has re-examined the types against the now-large genetic dataset for redbelly tilapia, the possibility that Coptodon ismailiaensis represents a local population or junior synonym of the highly variable, widespread Coptodon zillii cannot honestly be excluded; it should be regarded as a valid but very poorly corroborated species pending restudy.
Morphology
Coptodon ismailiaensis is a small cichlid, with a recorded maximum of about 3.5 in standard length — modest even by tilapia standards and far short of the redbelly tilapia's typical size. The body is moderately deep and laterally compressed, with a straight head profile, a relatively large terminal mouth whose maxilla reaches to below the front edge of the eye, and a large, somewhat dorsolaterally placed eye; the ventral outline of the body is described as straight. Fin counts run to about 15 dorsal spines and 12-13 soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 8-9 anal soft rays. The dorsal fin originates above the rear edge of the operculum and ends in a point, the pectoral fin is pointed, the pelvic (ventral) fins usually reach the vent, and the caudal fin is truncate. The lower jaw bears a mix of unicuspid and bicuspid teeth, and the lower pharyngeal bone is broad, its width about 164 percent of its length — a robust pharyngeal mill consistent with a plant- and detritus-processing diet. In life the ground colour is bright grey to yellowish on the flanks and blackish dorsolaterally, with a rosy to blackish-red ventral surface. The pattern is strongly barred: about nine broad dark vertical bars (seven on the flanks plus two on the head) cross the body, overlain by two dark longitudinal stripes, one running along the back to the end of the dorsal-fin base and a second tracking the midline from the operculum to the caudal base. A black opercular spot is present, and the dorsal fin may or may not carry the dark blotch known as the "tilapia mark." Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in any detail; as in other small Coptodon, breeding adults presumably intensify in colour, but no reliable sex-specific characters have been published for this species.
Habitat
Every confirmed record of Coptodon ismailiaensis comes from a single Egyptian waterway, the Ismailia Canal, and the species is treated as endemic to it. The canal is one of the principal freshwater branches of the Nile: it leaves the river near Cairo and runs roughly 81 mi eastward across the desert to the city of Ismailia on the Suez Canal, supplying drinking and irrigation water to the towns of the isthmus. It is therefore not a natural lake or river but an artificial, slow-flowing Nile distributary — warm, fertile, and heavily used. Published water-quality surveys of the canal describe water that is hard and slightly alkaline, with pH generally in the range of about 7.5 to 8.5 and pronounced seasonal temperature swings, from roughly 63 °F in winter to about 86–88 °F in high summer. The canal is also notably polluted along much of its length: studies repeatedly flag industrial, agricultural and domestic effluent, elevated heavy-metal loads, and water-quality indices ranging from good to poor for aquatic life. As a benthopelagic freshwater fish of this lowland Nile-delta system, Coptodon ismailiaensis occupies the same shallow, vegetated, mineral-rich habitat as the other tilapias that dominate the canal's fish fauna. No in-situ depth range has been published; like its congeners it is a fish of shallow margins and the upper water column, so a depth band of roughly 0–16 ft is a reasonable reading of its habitat rather than a measured figure.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Coptodon ismailiaensis exists, but its anatomy and its placement within Coptodon make its trophic role clear. The genus comprises Africa's substrate-spawning tilapias, which are characteristically macrophyte-eating herbivores and detritivores rather than the fine-particle filter feeders seen among the mouthbrooding Oreochromis. The broad lower pharyngeal bone and the mixed unicuspid-bicuspid jaw dentition of Coptodon ismailiaensis are the tools of a fish that crops and grinds plant material and bottom detritus. Its close relative and canal-mate the redbelly tilapia (Coptodon zillii) is one of the best-studied herbivorous tilapias: in Nile canals and elsewhere it feeds heavily on filamentous algae, aquatic macrophytes, periphyton and associated detritus, taking small invertebrates opportunistically — an omnivore with a strong plant bias. FishBase places Coptodon ismailiaensis at a trophic level near 2.7, squarely in that herbivore-detritivore band. In the warm, productive, weed-rich waters of the Ismailia Canal, the species can be expected to graze algae and soft plant growth and to work over the organic-rich sediment, functioning as a small grazer-detritivore within the canal community.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Coptodon ismailiaensis has not been observed or described — its biology is known almost entirely by inference from its genus. Coptodon are biparental substrate spawners, and across the genus the pattern is consistent: a male and female form a monogamous pair for the duration of a breeding bout, establish and vigorously defend a territory, and clean and prepare a spawning site on the substrate. In the redbelly tilapia, the canal-dwelling relative whose courtship has been studied in detail (for example in Lake Kinneret), pairs excavate shallow nest depressions, perform mutual displays over the cleared site, and become strongly territorial toward intruders during the cycle. There is no reason to think Coptodon ismailiaensis departs from this template, but it should be stated plainly that pair formation, courtship and territoriality in this particular species remain entirely undocumented and are described here only by analogy to its close relatives.
Breeding
As a member of Coptodon, Coptodon ismailiaensis is a biparental substrate spawner — the contrast that originally separated this lineage from the mouthbrooding tilapias. In substrate-spawning tilapias generally, the pair lays a relatively large clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface or in an excavated nest depression; both parents then guard the eggs and the resulting wrigglers and shepherd the free-swimming fry, fanning the clutch and driving off intruders. The redbelly tilapia, the best-documented relative and a canal-mate of this species, builds saucer-shaped nests, deposits clutches commonly numbering in the high hundreds to a few thousand eggs depending on female size, and shows classic biparental brood defence. No clutch count, egg size, hatching time, or fry-development data have ever been published specifically for Coptodon ismailiaensis; the genus-typical figure of roughly several hundred to a couple of thousand eggs per spawning is the only reasonable guide, and it must be read as a congener estimate, not a measurement of this fish. Spawning in the Ismailia Canal would presumably track the warm season, when temperatures climb toward 86 °F — but again, this is inference, not record.
In the aquarium
Coptodon ismailiaensis has effectively no aquarium history. It is not collected for the ornamental trade, it does not appear in hobby price lists or breeding logs, and there is no documented account of it being kept, let alone bred, in captivity. Anyone wishing to maintain it would be working entirely from the husbandry of related substrate-spawning tilapias, above all the widely kept redbelly tilapia (Coptodon zillii). On that basis a few things can be said honestly. This is a warm-water fish: the Ismailia Canal runs from about 63 °F in winter to 86–88 °F in summer, and a maintenance temperature in the mid-20s °C (roughly 75–82 °F) with hard, slightly alkaline water (pH about 7.5-8.5) would mirror its native chemistry. It is small for a tilapia, around 3.5 in, so it does not need the cavernous tank a full-sized tilapia demands; a robust, well-filtered aquarium of a few hundred litres with a sand or fine-gravel bottom, some flat rocks or depressions to serve as spawning sites, and tolerance for the fish rearranging the substrate would suit the genus. The important cautions are the genus-typical ones: substrate-spawning tilapias are herbivorous and will demolish soft aquarium plants, and they become markedly territorial and aggressive when in breeding condition, so a roomy tank and robust tankmates are advisable. None of this has been tested on Coptodon ismailiaensis itself, and it should be regarded as a fish of scientific rather than hobbyist interest — a poorly known endemic that almost no aquarist will ever encounter.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Coptodon ismailiaensis as Data Deficient (assessed in 2007 by A. Azeroual and published in 2010), with an unknown population trend and a range given simply as Egypt. The Data Deficient listing reflects exactly the situation this profile describes: the species is known from a single canal and a tiny type series, has never been the subject of a population study, and its taxonomic status relative to the widespread redbelly tilapia has not been retested — so there is not enough information to gauge extinction risk. That uncertainty is itself a concern, because the one place this fish is known to live is under real pressure. The Ismailia Canal is among Egypt's most heavily exploited waterways, drawing Nile water for the drinking supply and irrigation of the eastern delta and Suez cities, and a consistent body of water-quality research documents industrial, agricultural and domestic pollution, elevated heavy-metal loads, and stretches rated poor for aquatic life. A narrowly endemic fish confined to a single artificial channel of that kind is, in principle, highly exposed to water-quality degradation, abstraction and flow management — but with no monitoring data specific to the species, none of this can be translated into a documented threat. The honest conservation summary is that Coptodon ismailiaensis is too poorly known to assess, and that resolving its validity and surveying its canal home are prerequisites to saying anything more.
