Taxonomy & naming
The pastel cichlid was described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1907 as Cichlasoma alfari, in his 'Notes on fresh-water fishes from Mexico and Central America' for the Field Columbian Museum. The type locality is Turrialba, in the Atlantic-slope highlands of Costa Rica; the holotype (FMNH 6032) and a series of paratypes (FMNH 6033) remain in what is now the Field Museum collection. Like many Central American cichlids of its era, the species was long shuttled between catch-all genera. Over the following century it was combined into Parapetenia, Copora, Amphilophus and Astatheros, and it accumulated two junior synonyms: Cichlosoma lethrinus Regan, 1908 (from the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica) and Cichlasoma bouchellei Fowler, 1923 (from Nicaragua), both formally sunk into alfari by Bussing in his standard work on the freshwater fishes of Costa Rica. An early emendation of the epithet to 'alfaroi' by Gilbert and Kelso (1971) never caught on and the original spelling stands. The fish reached its current placement when Říčan, Piálek, Dragová and Novák (2016), in their comprehensive molecular revision of the Middle American cichlids, erected the genus Cribroheros for the so-called amphilophine 'alfari group' — a clade of lower-Central-American sand-sifters that had been nested awkwardly within Amphilophus and Astatheros. Cribroheros alfari is the type species and namesake of that genus, which today holds roughly nine species (including Cribroheros rhytisma, Cribroheros rostratus, Cribroheros longimanus and Cribroheros bussingi). Cichlid Room Companion places it in the tribe Therapsini within the subfamily Cichlinae.
Morphology
Cribroheros alfari is a moderately deep-bodied, oval cichlid of the generalized Central American 'mojarra' build. Reported maximum size is about 6.5 in standard length, with large dominant males approaching 8 in in total length; the bulk of wild and aquarium fish are smaller, around 4.5 in, and some Pacific-side populations mature noticeably more compact still. The common name captures the animal well: at rest it wears soft, washed pastel tones — pearly grey-blue to lavender flanks shading to yellow, pink or pale orange over the throat, cheek and belly, with a scattering of iridescent flecks. The species is geographically highly variable, and fish from different drainages (and from the Atlantic versus the Pacific slope, where it has also been recorded) differ in how much orange they carry on the face and body. A row of dark mid-lateral blotches and a spot on the caudal base are usually discernible, and like most heroines the fish can throw a bold pattern of vertical bars when stressed or during disputes — a flush of dark banding across the whole body is, in fact, the standard sign of an uneasy specimen. Sexual dimorphism is modest but real: males grow larger and heavier-headed, with more produced (pointed) dorsal and anal fin tips, while ripe females are rounder-bellied and often more intensely coloured when in breeding dress.
Habitat
The species is a fish of the Caribbean (Atlantic) slope of lower Central America, distributed from the Río Patuca in Honduras south through the Caribbean drainages of Nicaragua and Costa Rica into western Panama; it is also present on parts of the Pacific slope and is one of the characteristic cichlids of the San Juan ichthyofaunal province that links Lake Nicaragua to the sea. It is strikingly catholic in its choice of water. FishBase notes that it 'inhabits all sections of the river from the fast flowing upper sections to the slower moving lower reaches,' and it has been collected across an enormous elevational span, from about 7 ft to 3773 ft above sea level. Within that gradient it favours sand or mud bottoms where it can sift the substrate, but it is equally at home over pebble, rock and leaf-litter beds in well-oxygenated current, and hobbyist field reports place it near riffles, runs and even close to small waterfalls. Recorded water chemistry is warm and near-neutral: FishBase gives a pH range of roughly 6.5–7.0 and a temperature span of 68–93 °F, while aquarium-trade summaries widen the working envelope to about pH 7.0–7.8 and 73–86 °F over soft-to-moderately-hard water. These are warm, lowland-to-foothill tropical streams, and the fish behaves like a true habitat generalist within them.
Feeding
Cribroheros alfari is a substrate-sifting omnivore that leans toward animal prey — the feeding strategy that gives its genus its name (Latin cribrum, a sieve). It takes mouthfuls of sand or soft sediment and winnows them through the gill rakers, sorting out edible items and expelling the spoil, in the manner of the eartheaters it superficially resembles. Stomach work and field accounts identify aquatic insects as the staple, especially the larvae of Diptera (true flies, including chironomid midges) and Ephemeroptera (mayflies), supplemented by other small benthic invertebrates and by seeds and plant material drifting along the bottom. FishBase places it low on the food web, with an estimated trophic level near 2.6. In its home streams it functions as a mid-sized benthic forager of the sand-and-litter zone, neither a dedicated piscivore nor a strict herbivore but an opportunist that processes the bottom for whatever small protein it yields.
Mating
Like the great majority of Central American heroine cichlids, the pastel cichlid is a monogamous pair-spawner, and pairing reorganizes its social life around a defended territory. Outside breeding the species is gregarious but assertive; as a pair forms, both fish become markedly territorial, excavating and rearranging the substrate and driving intruders from a patch of bottom centred on a chosen spawning surface. The species' temperament is the crux of keeping it: dominant individuals — and especially rival males — do not tolerate one another, and confrontations between two evenly matched fish escalate into genuine, sometimes lethal fights ending in the submission or death of the loser. Courtship follows the familiar heroine template of lateral displays, fin-spreading, jaw-locking tests of strength and cooperative cleaning of the spawning site, after which the bonded pair settles into the complementary roles of substrate-tending female and perimeter-guarding male.
Breeding
Cribroheros alfari is a biparental open-substrate spawner. The female deposits her eggs on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone, a root, or a pit excavated in firm substrate — and the pair guards and tends the clutch together, the female fanning and mouthing the eggs while the male holds the surrounding territory. Fecundity is moderate: FishBase reports clutches of about 300–400 eggs, and notes a clear seasonal trigger in the wild, with spawning concentrated at the end of the dry season just before the rains return — timing that places the free-swimming young into the productive, food-rich early wet season. After the eggs hatch, the larvae are moved to pits and guarded as a school of fry, shepherded by both parents in classic Central American fashion until they are large enough to disperse. In aquaria the species spawns readily for a competent keeper once a compatible pair is established; a temperature near 77 °F and a pH around 7.5 are reported as productive conditions, and the pair will defend eggs and fry vigorously against tankmates.
In the aquarium
The pastel cichlid is a moderately demanding but rewarding fish that turns up only occasionally in the trade, usually through specialist Central American keepers and clubs. Its single most important husbandry fact is its temperament: this is a territorial, sometimes hot-tempered cichlid whose males will not share a tank with one another, and a pair holding eggs becomes intolerant of most neighbours. A pair therefore wants a generous footprint — on the order of 130 US gal or more, longer rather than taller, aquascaped so that sightlines are broken and subordinate fish can escape. Keeping several specimens together is workable only in a large tank with enough cover and floor area to spread out aggression, and mixing two adult males is strongly discouraged.
The tank should reproduce its warm, well-oxygenated stream: temperatures of about 73–86 °F, a near-neutral pH (roughly 7.0–7.8 suits trade-raised stock, though the species spans 6.5–7.0 in the wild), and soft to moderately hard water. Because wild fish live in current — sometimes close to riffles and small falls — generous filtration and oxygenation are recommended; an over-rated canister or sump that turns the water over briskly suits it far better than a placid, low-flow setup. A deep bed of sand is essential, both because the fish is a compulsive digger that will rearrange gravel and uproot loose plants, and because sifting sand is its natural feeding behaviour. Furnish with driftwood, roots, rounded stones and a few robust or potted plants to create territories and visual barriers; keep up substantial routine water changes, as with any medium cichlid producing a heavy bioload.
Feeding is undemanding. As a substrate-sifting omnivore it accepts quality sinking pellets and flake readily, and thrives on a varied menu that includes frozen or live bloodworm, other insect larvae, small crustaceans and the occasional vegetable component to mirror the seeds and detritus it ingests in the wild. Suitable tankmates are robust, similarly sized Central Americans and other fish too large to be swallowed and too sturdy to be bullied — but tankmate choice must always be made against the species' territorial streak, especially once a pair decides to breed.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Cribroheros alfari as Least Concern (assessed 17 June 2019 by T.J. Lyons and W.A. Matamoros, published 2020), reflecting a wide distribution across the Atlantic-slope drainages of Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, an apparent absence of any documented population decline, and the fish's tolerance of a broad range of habitats. It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest, though it is collected in modest numbers for the aquarium trade. The assessment does flag regional pressures on the rivers it lives in — pollution from agricultural runoff, municipal and sewage discharge, and the land-use change that accompanies plantation agriculture across lower Central America — but notes that the direct effects of these threats on the species have not been quantified and that there is currently no indication of a major decline. As a widespread, adaptable habitat generalist, the pastel cichlid is far less exposed than the many narrow-range endemic cichlids of the same basins, and its near-term status appears secure.
