Taxonomy & naming
Gobiocichla wonderi was described in 1951 by the American ichthyologist Robert H. Kanazawa, who erected the new genus Gobiocichla for it in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History. The type material was collected from the Niger River at Sotuba, near Bamako in what was then French Sudan and is today Mali; the holotype (FMNH 50423) is held at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The species has accumulated no synonyms and the original combination has stood unchanged. Within the African cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae it belongs to a small, distinctive genus that remained monotypic for three decades until Tyson R. Roberts described a second species, Gobiocichla ethelwynnae, in 1982 from the rapids of the Cross River in Cameroon. The two species are strongly rheophilic and share the elongate, goby-like body that gives the genus its name, but they are geographically isolated in separate West African drainages — wonderi in the Niger system, ethelwynnae in the Cross. The genus is one of a handful of cichlid lineages that have independently evolved a current-adapted form, a case of convergence with the unrelated rheophilic fishes of the same rapids.
Morphology
Gobiocichla wonderi is a small cichlid, reaching only about 2.5 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of its family and far smaller than the larger riverine cichlids of West Africa. Its body is strikingly elongate and, in cross-section, vertically oval rather than the deep, laterally compressed disc typical of cichlids; the overall impression is of a goby or a small loach, an adaptation for life pressed against the substrate in fast water. The fin counts are distinctive: the dorsal fin is long and low, carrying an unusually high 22 to 24 spines followed by 8 to 10 soft rays, with the anal fin bearing 2 to 4 spines and 8 to 10 soft rays, over 33 to 35 vertebrae. The squamation is only slightly reduced, the upper jaw is moderately protrusible, and the groove between the upper jaw and snout runs continuously around the snout. A dark blotch on the soft dorsal fin — the so-called 'Tilapia mark' — is present in both juveniles and adults. The colouration is generally subdued and cryptic, in keeping with a life spent clinging to rock, with darker markings and barring that break up the outline against current-washed stone. Sexual dimorphism is weak and poorly documented; the sexes are not reliably distinguished on external appearance alone, and mature fish are most readily told apart by behaviour and breeding condition rather than by colour or finnage.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Niger River system of West Africa, where it is restricted to the rapids of the middle and upper Niger. Confirmed records span Mali (including the type locality at Sotuba near Bamako), Guinea in the headwater reaches, and Nigeria in the middle river, where it is associated with the cataract and rapids stretches such as those around Busa and the Kainji area before the river was dammed. It is a true rheophile, found only in swift, turbulent, well-oxygenated water flowing over rock — the white-water habitat that excludes most cichlids. Here it lives among boulders and bedrock in the fastest reaches, using its slender, flattened body to shelter in cracks and the slack micro-currents behind stones while remaining within the broader torrent. The Niger in these reaches is warm tropical fresh water; rapids cichlids of this kind occupy water that is typically near-neutral and warm, broadly in the range of about pH 6.5 to 7.8 and roughly 75–84 °F, with the defining environmental variable being not chemistry but current speed and oxygenation. As a shallow, rock-bound rapids specialist it lives at modest depth, within the upper few metres of the water column where the flow is strongest.
Feeding
Gobiocichla wonderi is an aufwuchs grazer. It feeds mainly on algae attached to rocks — the biofilm of microscopic algae, diatoms and associated micro-organisms that coats stone surfaces in fast, sunlit water — which it rasps from the substrate. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.0, consistent with a near-strict herbivore and grazer rather than a predator. This trophic role fits its habitat precisely: the rock surfaces of well-lit rapids are among the most productive algal substrates in a river, continually flushed with nutrients and oxygen by the current, and a fish able to hold station against that current has near-exclusive access to the standing crop. In the rapids community it functions as one of the substrate grazers, scraping the same algal film that supports other rheophilic fishes, and its small size and clinging habit let it exploit micro-surfaces in turbulent zones that larger, deeper-bodied grazers cannot reach.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour in Gobiocichla wonderi is documented chiefly from aquarium observation, and the wild courtship has not been described in detail. The species is reported to form pair bonds, but the bond is weak by cichlid standards — a loose and comparatively low-investment pairing rather than the tight, mutually defended partnership seen in many substrate-spawning cichlids. Pair formation precedes spawning in a cave or crevice, the kind of sheltered rock cavity that is abundant in its rapids habitat. The relatively muted sexual dimorphism is consistent with this weak pair bond: where the sexes do not differ dramatically in colour or ornament, mate assessment turns more on behaviour and the holding of a suitable spawning site than on visual display. Territoriality appears to centre on the chosen cave rather than on broad areas of substrate, which suits a fish whose entire life is organised around securing position in turbulent water.
Breeding
Gobiocichla wonderi is, on the available evidence, a cave spawner that practices weak pair-bonding — eggs are laid and fertilised inside a sheltered rock cavity, in the manner expected of a rheophilic crevice-dwelling cichlid. The detailed breeding account comes from aquarium observation rather than the wild. There, the female takes the dominant role in brood care: she does the guarding and cleaning of the eggs and larvae largely on her own, with the male providing little assistance during this phase. The young become free-swimming at roughly three weeks after spawning, at which point both parents share in guarding the brood for about a further month before independence. The male is therefore the less involved parent throughout, a pattern that matches the species' loose pair bond. Specific clutch sizes for wonderi have not been reliably published; small crevice-spawning cichlids of comparable size typically lay clutches on the order of a few dozen to a couple of hundred eggs, but a firm figure for this species is not on record, and the genus as a whole is poorly studied in this respect.
In the aquarium
Gobiocichla wonderi is an uncommon specialist in the hobby, occasionally imported as a curiosity under names such as the 'goby cichlid' from the upper Niger, and it is emphatically not a community fish for the unprepared. Everything about keeping it follows from its single non-negotiable requirement: powerful, well-oxygenated flow. A successful tank is a 'river' setup — strong circulation from a powerhead or river-manifold, very high oxygen saturation, scrupulous filtration, and a rock-and-cobble aquascape that provides the cracks and crevices the fish uses for shelter and spawning. Without brisk current the fish languishes; this is a rapids animal, not a still-water cichlid. A modest footprint suffices for so small a species, but the tank must be set up for flow rather than volume, with the rockwork arranged to create the turbulent, oxygen-rich micro-habitat the fish evolved in.
Water should be warm and near-neutral — broadly 75–84 °F and around pH 6.5 to 7.8 — and, above all, clean and highly oxygenated; the species' tolerance is for current and oxygen rather than for a wide chemical envelope. Feeding plays to its biology: it is an algae grazer, so a sunlit tank that grows a good film of aufwuchs on the rockwork is ideal, supplemented with spirulina-based and other vegetable foods and small frozen items. It will not thrive on a meat-heavy diet. Tankmates, if any, should be other small rheophiles that share its preference for fast water and will not outcompete it for grazing surfaces or harass it; large or boisterous cichlids are a poor match. Breeding in captivity has been achieved and is the source of most of what is known about its reproduction, but the fish remains a project for an experienced keeper willing to build and maintain a true high-flow biotope rather than a candidate for a general cichlid tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Gobiocichla wonderi as Near Threatened (criterion B2a), in an assessment published on 19 August 2019 by Olaosebikan, Awaïss and Lalèyè. The species qualifies as Near Threatened on the basis of a restricted and fragmented area of occupancy combined with ongoing habitat pressure. Because it is confined to the specific, rare habitat of Niger rapids, it is intrinsically vulnerable to anything that alters river flow — and the threats the assessors list reflect exactly that exposure: dams and water management, agricultural expansion (annual and perennial non-timber crops), logging and wood harvesting, and agricultural and forestry effluents polluting the river. Damming is the central concern for a rapids specialist: impoundments such as those on the middle Niger drown the very cataract habitat the fish depends on, replacing fast, oxygen-rich, rock-bound water with slow reservoir conditions in which it cannot live, and they fragment the remaining populations. The population trend is recorded as unknown. The species carries no CITES listing. For a fish whose entire existence is tied to free-flowing rapids in a heavily developed and developing river basin, the long-term outlook depends on whether stretches of unregulated, turbulent Niger water remain.
