Taxonomy & naming
Thysochromis ansorgii was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1901, in a paper on the fishes collected by Dr William John Ansorge in the Niger Delta (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London). He placed it in the catch-all West African genus Pelmatochromis as Pelmatochromis ansorgii, naming it for its collector. The type locality is the junction of the Ethiop River and the Jamieson River in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and the four syntypes are held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1901.2.8.9-12).
The species accumulated a tangle of synonyms over the following decades, all of them names Boulenger or his contemporaries applied to slight colour or pattern variants of the same fish: Pelmatochromis arnoldi Boulenger, 1912 (lower Niger River), Pelmatochromis annectens Boulenger/Regan, 1913 (lower Niger River), and Ahl's Pelmatochromis maculifer (1929) and Tilapia maculifer (1939), both from Lagos. Loiselle and Welcomme, revising the chromidotilapiine cichlids in 1972, recognised that ansorgii did not belong in Pelmatochromis and coined the genus Thysia for it. That name proved to be preoccupied, and Jacques Daget supplied the replacement name Thysochromis in 1988; Daget formally treated the genus and species in the 1991 CLOFFA checklist (Check-list of the Freshwater Fishes of Africa). The genus name combines the Greek thysis ('impulsive') with chromis, an old name for a perch-like fish.
For most of its history Thysochromis was monotypic. That changed in 2019, when Walsh, Lamboj and Stiassny published a review of the genus (Journal of Fish Biology) and described a second species, Thysochromis emili, from the Noumbi and Kouilou drainages of the Republic of Congo. Using mitochondrial DNA and morphometrics they resolved Thysochromis as two geographically disjunct species: Thysochromis ansorgii confined to the upper Guinean ichthyofaunal province (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria), and Thysochromis emili restricted to the lower Guinean province in coastal Congo. Their work confirmed arnoldi and annectens as synonyms of Thysochromis ansorgii and showed that the long-puzzling Congolese records — two specimens Teugels and colleagues had reported from Lake Koubambi in 1991 — actually represented the new southern species rather than a range extension of ansorgii. The genus belongs to the tribe Chromidotilapiini within the African subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae.
Morphology
Thysochromis ansorgii is a small, deep-bodied and laterally compressed cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum standard length of about 3.5 in; including the tail, total lengths of roughly 4.5–5 in have been recorded, so a large adult is a stout fish of palm-length rather than a giant. The body is deep (about 36-47% of standard length) with a relatively large head (about 32-40% of standard length), a slightly rounded snout, and a small, terminal mouth with equal jaws. The outer jaw teeth are evenly spaced, conical and unicuspid, backed by two to four inner rows, while the lower pharyngeal teeth are bicuspid — the dentition of a generalist rather than a specialist crusher or scraper. The fin counts are typical of the genus: 13-16 dorsal spines and 9-11 soft rays, with three anal spines and 7-9 anal soft rays, and the scales are cycloid.
In life the head and back are a golden-beige, the sides a silvery-beige sometimes flushed with rosy-violet, and the scales are finely dark-edged. The hallmark of the species is a row of four to seven large, irregular dark blotches down the middle of the flank, some of them coalescing into a broken mid-lateral band, with a further series of three to five smaller spots between that band and the dorsal fin. A dark stripe runs from the eye toward the upper jaw, and the cheek and lower gill cover often carry a bluish flush. The pelvic fins are a purplish red with a pale blue leading edge in both sexes, and the dorsal and upper caudal fins are edged in bluish white.
The sexes differ in fin shape and finnage colour. In males the soft dorsal, anal and caudal fins are covered with small spots that form a reticulate pattern, the spinous dorsal carries a red margin with an iridescent blue submarginal band, and the first pelvic ray is the longest, sometimes reaching the anal-fin origin. Females show a reduced or absent reticulate pattern, often brighter red fin margins, a longer second (rather than first) pelvic ray, and a diagnostic series of five to seven silvery-white scales just above the belly. A ripe, sexually active female is unmistakable: her belly turns a deep purple-red and a silvery patch develops in the anal region.
Habitat
Thysochromis ansorgii is a fish of the forested coastal lowlands of West Africa, occurring in the short rivers, swamps, creeks and lagoons that drain to the Gulf of Guinea. Following the 2019 revision, its confirmed native range runs through the upper Guinean province: the coastal basins of south-eastern Ivory Coast (the Agnébi, Mé, Comoé, Bia and Tano rivers, and the Ébrié Lagoon), through south-western Ghana, the Ouémé in Benin, and into southern Nigeria, where it is found in the Ogun and Oshun rivers, the Niger Delta, and the Ethiop, Calabar, Great Kwa and lower Cross drainages. Older reports from the Ogowe basin in Gabon and the Kouilou-Niari in the Republic of Congo are now attributed wholly or partly to its sister species Thysochromis emili, and the species' status in Lower Guinea remains under review.
The waters it favours are the slow, warm, often tannin-stained channels and floodplain swamps of the coastal rainforest belt — soft to moderately mineralised and demersal in habit. FishBase records a pH range of about 6.0 to 8.0 and hardness from roughly 5 to 19 dH, spanning the soft blackwater of forest creeks and the harder, near-neutral water of lagoon margins. Reported temperatures sit in a narrow tropical band of about 75–79 °F. Like most lowland swamp cichlids it lives in shallow water — there is no published depth survey for the species, but its habitats are typically only a metre or two deep, so a shallow band on the order of 0–10 ft is a reasonable inference. The IUCN classifies its habitat simply as permanent inland wetlands: rivers, streams and creeks of the coastal lowlands.
Feeding
There is no dedicated dietary study of Thysochromis ansorgii in the wild, and the species' feeding is best read from its anatomy and its place in the food web. FishBase estimates a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a small generalist omnivore that takes animal and plant material rather than a strict predator or herbivore. Its dentition supports this: an outer row of small conical, unicuspid teeth with several inner rows, and bicuspid pharyngeal teeth — a mouth suited to picking small invertebrates, crustaceans and insect larvae from the substrate and among leaf litter, while also taking algae, detritus and bits of plant matter.
In the soft, leaf-strewn coastal swamps it inhabits, it functions as a benthic-to-mid-water forager working the bottom and the tangle of roots and submerged vegetation. In captivity it is entirely unfussy, taking prepared flake and pellet foods readily and relishing live and frozen invertebrates such as brine shrimp and bloodworm — the behaviour of an opportunistic feeder that has made it an easy fish to keep.
Mating
Thysochromis ansorgii is a pair-bonding cichlid, and pairs form a lasting bond around a defended spawning site rather than the male holding a harem. By the standards of West African cichlids it is mild-mannered: keepers who have spawned it report little more than the normal flaring of gills and lateral displays between rivals as fish stake out territory, and it can be kept and bred without the explosive aggression seen in many substrate-spawning cichlids. The sexes are readily told apart as the fish approach maturity — at little more than 1.5 in females begin to show the silvery scales near the vent and males develop the spotted, reticulate patterning in the unpaired fins — which makes pairing straightforward.
Courtship is signalled mainly by the female. A ripe female intensifies into a deep purple-red across the belly with a silvery patch at the anal region, advertising her readiness to a chosen male, and the pair then jointly select and clean a spawning surface. Hobby experience suggests that small, young pairs settle and spawn more reliably than large, established adults — a quirk that, combined with the species' generally tolerant temperament, makes it one of the more approachable West African cichlids for a first attempt at breeding.
Breeding
Thysochromis ansorgii is a biparental substrate brooder. In the wild and in well-furnished aquaria it spawns preferentially in caves or cave-like structures — a recess under wood or stone, the inside of a flowerpot, or any concealed hollow with a defendable opening — and both parents share the guarding and rearing of the brood. The species is not a mouthbrooder; the adhesive eggs are laid on a cleaned surface and tended in the open-substrate manner of its chromidotilapiine relatives.
It has a reputation among aquarists as a very easy fish to breed, and captive observations fill in the details that field studies have not. Pairs will spawn on the wall of a cave or, when no cave is offered, directly on the aquarium glass or another flat surface. Clutches are modest — on the order of a couple of hundred eggs, in line with the small body size and with congeneric chromidotilapiines — and the fish do not require any particular water chemistry to reproduce: spawnings have been reported in near-neutral, moderately hard water (around pH 7.3 and 4.5-5.5 dH) with no special conditioning. Both parents guard the eggs and then the wrigglers, and once the fry are free-swimming the parents continue to shepherd them; keepers typically watch parental care for one to two weeks before separating the young. The fry are comparatively large and can take newly hatched brine shrimp almost as soon as they are free-swimming, which makes them straightforward to raise. Water chemistry appears to have little influence even on the sex ratio of the offspring.
In the aquarium
Thysochromis ansorgii is one of the more accommodating West African cichlids and a reasonable choice for a keeper moving beyond beginner fish. Its small adult size means a single pair can be housed in a modest tank — something in the range of a standard 20–30 US gal aquarium is enough for a pair, with more room welcome if tankmates are added. Reported set-ups have been as simple as a bare-bottomed tank with a sponge filter and a clump of Java moss for cover, which tells you how undemanding the species is, though a more naturalistic layout of soft or sandy substrate, driftwood, leaf litter and a cave or two suits it better and brings out its colours.
Water chemistry is genuinely flexible. The species occupies everything from soft forest blackwater to harder lagoon margins in the wild, and in the aquarium it has been kept and bred without difficulty in near-neutral, moderately hard tap water; a pH anywhere from about 6.0 to 8.0 and hardness up to the high teens in dH are tolerated, at a tropical temperature around 75–79 °F. Good filtration and routine water changes keep it in condition, but no exotic chemistry is needed. Diet is equally simple: it thrives on a varied menu of quality flake and pellet foods supplemented with live or frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm and similar invertebrates.
Temperament is the species' great virtue. It is territorial only in a mild way — gill-flaring and posturing rather than serious violence — so it mixes well with other calm, similarly sized fish. Reported tankmates have included Pseudocrenilabrus and rainbowfish without trouble, and dither fish such as small tetras or rainbows help settle a pair. The main caveats are the ordinary ones for a pair-bonding cichlid: give a breeding pair their own space, since they will defend a spawning cave against intruders, and avoid very large or boisterous tankmates that would simply intimidate a 3.5 in fish. For anyone wanting an attractive, hardy, peaceful West African cichlid that will spawn readily, Thysochromis ansorgii is hard to better.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Thysochromis ansorgii as Least Concern (assessed 22 April 2019; published 2020; assessors Lalèyè & Moelants), on the grounds that the species has a wide distribution across the West African coastal lowlands with no known major, widespread threats. An earlier 2010 assessment reached the same Least Concern conclusion. The population trend is listed as unknown, and no species-specific conservation actions are in place. It is harvested locally and nationally as a food fish but is not in international trade for consumption, and it carries no CITES listing.
The threats the assessment does flag are the general pressures on West Africa's coastal rivers rather than anything aimed at this fish in particular. In the Niger Delta, oil exploration and the pollution that accompanies it degrade the swampy habitats the species depends on; across its range, deforestation, the spread of urban and agricultural land, and domestic, industrial and farm effluents erode water quality in the lowland creeks and wetlands it occupies. None of these is documented as a population-level danger to Thysochromis ansorgii, but as a swamp specialist of one of Africa's most heavily developed coastlines it is exposed to exactly the kind of habitat loss that quietly thins wide-ranging lowland fishes. The 2019 recognition that the genus contains two narrower-ranged species rather than one widespread one is also a reminder that the apparent security of a 'wide-ranging' cichlid can rest on lumped taxonomy; the true range and status of Thysochromis ansorgii sensu stricto is narrower than the old maps suggested.
