Taxonomy & naming
Lamprologus tigripictilis was described by Robert C. Schelly and Melanie L. J. Stiassny in 2004, in their revision of the Congo River Lamprologus published in American Museum Novitates (number 3451). It was one of two new species erected in that paper, alongside Lamprologus teugelsi, and brought the strictly riverine, West-African members of the genus to eight at the time (nine today, following the 2014 description of Lamprologus markerti). The genus Lamprologus itself was raised in 1891 by the Dutch zoologist Louise Schilthuis for Lamprologus congoensis, collected at Stanley Pool (Malebo Pool) near the Congo. For much of the twentieth century Lamprologus was a sprawling, heterogeneous assemblage that also held dozens of Lake Tanganyika cichlids; Stiassny (1997) confirmed what Colombé and Allgayer had argued in 1985 — that Lamprologus sensu stricto should be confined to the riverine species of the Congo basin, with all the other lamprologines being Tanganyikan endemics now placed in genera such as Neolamprologus and Lepidiolamprologus. Within the tribe Lamprologini, Lamprologus tigripictilis therefore sits among a small clutch of rheophilic Congo specialists. Its type locality lies in the lower Congo River rapids of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; FishBase, following the description and later work, gives its range as the lower Congo from just downstream of the mouth of the Inkisi River to the Inga Rapids, and notes that earlier records from below Inga (around Matadi and Boma) are now referred to the closely similar Lamprologus markerti.
Morphology
This is a small fish: the known maximum is about 3.5 in standard length, and like its congeners it rarely exceeds the size of a stout aquarium tetra-eater. The body is elongate and relatively shallow — a fusiform, current-cutting shape shared across riverine Lamprologus — with a head length running roughly 29 to 33 percent of standard length. The jaws are nearly even (isognathous), the lower lip sometimes protruding slightly, and both jaws carry pointed unicuspid teeth in outer and inner rows. The dorsal and anal fins each bear spines that lengthen toward the rear and end in tapering filamentous extensions that, when the fish is in good form, can reach back to the middle of the large, rounded, paddle-shaped caudal fin. The pelvic fins are somewhat produced in both sexes. Coloration is the species' calling card: the base body is a dark gray-brown, darker over the back, crossed by nine or ten dark vertical bars of varying thickness along the flanks, with a scaleless dark spot on the gill cover. The dorsal and anal fins are blackish, and the caudal-fin membranes carry rows of black blotches that often merge into roughly six dark vertical bands. Each individual flank scale is edged with dark pigment along its exposed posterior margin, and the regular overlap of these scales produces intersecting rows of thin oblique bands — an effect the describers likened to a chain-link fence or chain-mail. Touches of yellow appear on the cheek and belly, with bluish highlights beneath the eye. As in other Lamprologus, sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow larger and develop a more pronounced nuchal hump on the forehead, while females are plainer and, in breeding condition, can darken to nearly solid black.
Habitat
Lamprologus tigripictilis is a creature of the lower Congo River rapids, one of the most extreme freshwater environments on the planet. This stretch of the Congo concentrates an enormous volume of water into a narrow, rocky channel, generating ferocious current, deep scour-holes, and a turbid flow in which underwater visibility can drop below 8 in. The species occurs in the same rapids habitat as the famous blind cichlid Lamprologus lethops, but where Lamprologus lethops inhabits the deepest, darkest mainstream sections (over 656 ft down), Lamprologus tigripictilis lives in the shallower rocky margins alongside other rheophilic specialists such as Steatocranus, Teleogramma, Nanochromis and Thoracochromis. To survive here, riverine Lamprologus have evolved a reduced swim bladder that lets them sink and hold position on the bottom rather than fight to stay submerged in the torrent. The species is restricted to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, within the Lower Congo Rapids freshwater ecoregion — a roughly 350-km reach of rapids celebrated for its endemic, current-adapted fish fauna. The water is warm and, in keeping with the broader Congo basin, soft and near-neutral, though in-situ chemistry for this particular reach is poorly published; depth records are likewise scant, but the species is a shallow-rapids fish rather than a deep-channel one.
Feeding
Lamprologus tigripictilis is an insectivore that forages over the rocky, current-swept substrate. Examination of gut contents reported through FishBase found sand, detritus, and insect parts — including what appeared to be aquatic insect larvae and an adult dipteran (a true fly) — a profile consistent with a fish that picks invertebrate prey from rock surfaces and crevices and incidentally takes in sediment as it does so. Riverine Lamprologus as a group are insectivorous, with short, simple intestines that reflect this animal-based diet rather than the long gut of an algae-grazer. In its rapids community, Lamprologus tigripictilis functions as one of many small benthic invertivores partitioning the rocky bottom, exploiting the steady drift of aquatic insects and their larvae that the fast water delivers.
Mating
Breeding behavior has not been observed in the wild for any of the riverine Lamprologus, and Lamprologus tigripictilis is no exception; what is known comes from the genus's behavior in aquaria. Lamprologus form stable, monogamous pair bonds. Unusually for cave-brooding cichlids, paired partners rarely share a single cave or shelter, but they remain close to one another and jointly hold a territory. As spawning approaches, the pair's coloration darkens, with females in particular sometimes turning almost entirely black. Males are the larger, more ornamented sex and carry the bigger forehead hump; in several species the males also bear rows of bright silvery dots on the flanks and unpaired fins that the females lack. Territory defense against intruders is shared, and a well-matched pair will hold its patch of rock cooperatively in the lead-up to spawning.
Breeding
Like its congeners, Lamprologus tigripictilis is a monogamous cave brooder. Spawning has been documented in aquaria for several riverine Lamprologus and follows a consistent pattern that almost certainly applies here. The female deposits a clutch of small whitish eggs inside a cave or rock crevice; large females of the genus may lay up to roughly 400 eggs, though typical clutches for a fish this size are smaller. The female takes the lead in tending the eggs and larvae, fanning and guarding them with little or no help from the male, who instead patrols the territory. Eggs hatch after about three days, and the wrigglers — cryptically colored to blend with the substrate — remain in the cave until they have absorbed their yolk sacs, becoming free-swimming roughly six to seven days after hatching. For the first week or so of free swimming the pair actively shepherds the fry, after which the parents shift to defending the territory and tolerating the young within it rather than actively herding them. The fry stay close at first, then disperse, leaving the parental territory some four to six weeks after spawning. Because the young are not strongly led out into open water, this guard-the-cave strategy suits a small fish in a high-energy, predator-rich rapids environment.
In the aquarium
Riverine Lamprologus only entered the hobby in any numbers in the early 2000s, and Lamprologus tigripictilis remains an uncommon, somewhat specialist fish rather than a staple; Anton Lamboj's work on West African cichlids is the foundational husbandry reference, and the Cichlid Room Companion profile is curated by Lamboj as well. These are active, fast-moving, bottom-oriented cichlids, and the keys to keeping them are flow and structure rather than soft-water chemistry. A tank of at least 30 US gallons (about 30 US gal) is the sensible minimum for a pair, aquascaped to echo the natural habitat: a sand substrate with plenty of rockwork arranged to create natural caves, supplemented with waterlogged wood. Aquatic plants are not part of the biotope and are not needed. Because the species comes from fast rapids, strong circulation and high oxygenation matter — a powerhead or a generously sized filter return to keep the water moving, plus frequent water changes, will keep the fish in good health. Water chemistry is a secondary concern: although the natural water is soft, riverine Lamprologus are hardy and adapt to a range of conditions, so a pH around neutral is recommended but both modestly acidic and modestly alkaline water are tolerated. The temperature range usually suggested for the genus is on the cool side for a tropical cichlid, roughly 75–79 °F (75 to 79 °F), reflecting the well-oxygenated river water they come from. Feeding is straightforward for an insectivore — frozen and live invertebrate foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and similar fare, with quality prepared foods accepted. For breeding, provide defensible caves and avoid housing them with large, aggressive cichlids that would prevent a pair from holding a territory. The fry, though tiny, take baby brine shrimp, microworms or vinegar eels readily, and several generations can coexist in one tank, with some attrition, if there is enough cover.
Conservation
Lamprologus tigripictilis is assessed on the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable (VU), under criterion D2 — the category used for species known from very few locations and therefore exposed to a plausible threat that could rapidly push them to a higher risk category. The assessment was carried out on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010. The species is known from fewer than five locations in the lower Congo rapids, and the principal concerns are tied to development in that confined reach: quarrying for construction materials near Luozi, and above all the cascade of hydroelectric projects on the lower Congo. The existing Inga 1 and Inga 2 dams are judged to have minimal impact, but the planned Inga 3 would divert a significant share of the river's flow, and the proposed Grand Inga scheme would block a large part of the mainstream with major consequences for the rapids fauna. Because the lower Congo rapids host a tightly endemic, current-adapted fish community — of which this species is one member — any large-scale alteration of the river's flow regime is the dominant long-term threat to its survival. It carries no CITES listing and is not used commercially beyond occasional collection for the aquarium trade.
