Lithochromis xanthopteryx is a rock-dwelling ('mbipi') haplochromine cichlid of Lake Victoria, described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Nathalie Bouton as part of the same burst of taxonomic work that erected the well-known genera Pundamilia, Neochromis and Mbipia for the lake's rock-cichlid community. Its epithet, from Greek roots meaning 'yellow-finned', describes the male's breeding colour. Like its rock-dwelling relatives, it is caught up in the same conservation story that has made Lake Victoria cichlids a textbook case of speciation threatened by eutrophication and hybridisation, and the CARES Preservation Program lists it as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Lithochromis xanthopteryx was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Nathalie Bouton, as part of a wider series of papers in which Seehausen and collaborators formally described the genera and species of Lake Victoria's rock-dwelling 'mbipi' haplochromine community — the same body of work that erected Pundamilia (type species P. nyererei) and described numerous species now placed in Neochromis, Mbipia and Lithochromis. Lithochromis was created for a group of these rock cichlids distinguished by particular jaw and dental adaptations for scraping algae from stone surfaces. As with the rest of the mbipi radiation, the wider community of Lake Victoria haplochromines remains a famously unresolved 'species flock' of several hundred recently and explosively evolved forms, and while Lithochromis is a validly erected and widely used genus for this group, some general treatments still discuss these fish under the historic catch-all Haplochromis pending a complete phylogenetic revision.

Morphology

Lithochromis xanthopteryx is, like its rock-dwelling relatives, a small, compressed haplochromine cichlid, with the genus characterised by dental and jaw specialisations suited to scraping algae and aufwuchs from rock surfaces. As its epithet indicates, breeding males show yellow-pigmented fins, set against the more typical pattern of darker or more saturated breeding dress seen across the mbipi community; females and non-breeding fish are expected to be plainer and more cryptically coloured, in keeping with the strong sexual dichromatism typical of the group. Habitat
