Taxonomy & naming
Neochromis omnicaeruleus was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Niels Bouton during their detailed survey of Lake Victoria's rocky-shore cichlid community. The genus Neochromis (Greek neo, “new,” plus chromis, a classical fish name) groups a set of rock-dwelling haplochromines separated from related genera by dentition and body-form characters. The species epithet omnicaeruleus is a compound of the Latin omni-, “all” or “entirely,” and caeruleus, “blue,” describing the essentially all-blue body colour of breeding males — a distinctive, whole-body colour morph in a genus where many species instead show contrasting dark bars or blotches over a paler ground colour.
Morphology
Neochromis omnicaeruleus shares the compact, deep-bodied form typical of Lake Victoria's rock-dwelling algae grazers, with fine, closely packed teeth for scraping algal film from stone. Its defining feature is colouration rather than body shape: breeding males are described as essentially uniform blue over the whole body, in contrast to the barred or two-toned patterns of many related species, while females are duller and more cryptically patterned.
Habitat
The species inhabits Lake Victoria's rocky littoral zone — boulder fields and rock outcrops around islands and shoreline headlands — sharing this habitat with a dense assemblage of other rock-dwelling haplochromines in shallow, sunlit water where algal growth on stone is abundant.
Feeding
Neochromis omnicaeruleus is presumed to be an epilithic algae grazer, scraping the algal film from submerged rock surfaces in the manner typical of its genus, a diet likely supplemented incidentally by small invertebrates within the algal turf.
Mating
The all-blue breeding colouration that gives this species its name is presumably central to female mate choice, following the pattern documented across Lake Victoria's rock-cichlid community, in which males hold small territories and court females primarily through colour display. Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented specifically for this species.
Breeding
Neochromis omnicaeruleus is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as is universal among Lake Victoria haplochromines, with the female incubating fertilised eggs and fry in her mouth before releasing free-swimming young. Clutch size and incubation details specific to this species are not documented here.
In the aquarium
This species has limited documented presence in the mainstream aquarium trade, kept mainly by specialist Lake Victoria cichlid keepers, often through conservation-oriented networks connected to the CARES Preservation Program; its striking all-blue male colouration is likely part of its appeal to those keepers. Expected husbandry — hard alkaline water, a rockwork aquascape, and an algae-rich diet — follows from the genus, but detailed species-specific husbandry accounts are not documented here.

The CARES Preservation Program lists Neochromis omnicaeruleus as CARES Vulnerable (CVU) in its January 2026 Cichlidae priority list. No IUCN Red List assessment for this species could be confirmed here. As with its congeners, the species belongs to a rock-cichlid fauna reshaped by the historic Nile perch invasion of Lake Victoria and by ongoing eutrophication, which has been shown to impair colour-based mate discrimination among sibling rock-cichlid species and to promote hybridisation between them (Seehausen, van Alphen & Witte, 1997) — a threat mechanism of particular relevance to a species whose identity and mate recognition rest so heavily on a single, distinctive colour.
