Taxonomy & naming
Neochromis greenwoodi was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen and Niels Bouton, part of their broader taxonomic revision of Lake Victoria's rocky-shore cichlid community. The genus Neochromis (Greek neo, “new,” plus chromis, a classical fish name) was erected to hold a group of rock-dwelling haplochromines distinguished from related genera such as Mbipia and Pundamilia by details of dentition and body form. The species epithet greenwoodi is a patronym honouring Humphry Greenwood, the British Museum ichthyologist whose taxonomic revisions of Lake Victoria's haplochromine cichlids from the 1950s onward remain foundational to the study of the lake's cichlid diversity.
Morphology
Neochromis greenwoodi shares the compact, deep-bodied build typical of Lake Victoria's rock-dwelling algae grazers, with fine, closely packed outer teeth suited to scraping algal film from stone and several rows of smaller inner teeth. As in related species, breeding males are expected to show bright nuptial colouration contrasting with the duller, cryptic patterning of females, though the specific colour scheme of this species has not been documented in detail here.
Habitat
This species occupies the rocky littoral zone of Lake Victoria, living among boulder fields and rock outcrops around islands and shoreline headlands, typically in shallow, sunlit water supporting a dense algal turf. It shares this habitat with numerous other rock-dwelling haplochromine species in a crowded multispecies assemblage.
Feeding
Neochromis greenwoodi is presumed to be an epilithic algae grazer, scraping the algal film from submerged rock surfaces in the manner typical of its genus, supplemented incidentally by small invertebrates living within the algal turf.
