Taxonomy & naming
The long-snouted dwarf cichlid was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1903 as Pelmatochromis longirostris, on material collected from the Kribi River of southern Cameroon. The original series — seven syntypes, now held in the Natural History Museum, London under register BMNH 1903.7.28.77-83 — anchors the name; the type locality lies on the Atlantic slope of the Lower Guinea coast. The species was shuffled among the catch-all West African genera Pelmatochromis and Nanochromis for most of the twentieth century until Peter Humphry Greenwood, in 1987, erected the genus Parananochromis to receive three species he judged distinct from both: longirostris, caudifasciatus (Boulenger, 1913), and gabonicus (Trewavas, 1975). Greenwood designated longirostris as the type species of the new genus. Parananochromis belongs to the chromidotilapiine lineage, an assemblage of West and Central African dwarf cichlids that also contains Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis, Benitochromis, Thysochromis, Divandu and Nanochromis, united by derived anatomical features of the gill arches and buccopharynx. Within that group Parananochromis is diagnosed by its twelve circumpeduncular scales (versus fifteen or sixteen in several relatives) and by the configuration of its infraorbital sensory canals; longirostris itself is recognised by a lachrymal plus four tubular infraorbital bones with no gap between the third and fourth. The genus was substantially revised by Anton Lamboj and Melanie Stiassny (2003), who added three new species from Gabon and Cameroon, and Lamboj has continued to describe members of the lineage since. The species remains valid as Parananochromis longirostris (Boulenger, 1903).
Morphology
Parananochromis longirostris is a small, elongate cichlid; FishBase records a maximum of about 4 in standard length, making it one of the larger members of an otherwise diminutive genus. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, and the species takes both its scientific and informal names from its conspicuously produced, pointed snout — longirostris is Latin for "long-snouted." The fin counts are typical of the genus: fourteen to sixteen dorsal spines followed by nine to eleven soft rays, and three anal spines with six to eight soft rays. Live colour is subdued and cryptic, suited to a fish that spends its life among submerged leaves and roots: a brownish to greyish-olive ground, often with darker longitudinal shading and a degree of iridescent sheen on the flanks and unpaired fins in conditioned adults. The species shows some sexual dichromatism, as documented in the genus revision — males and females differ in fin development and in the intensity and pattern of their breeding colour, with ripe females typically developing a flushed, swollen abdomen when in spawning condition. The differences are real but understated; this is not a brightly dimorphic fish in the manner of its Pelvicachromis cousins, and sexing immature stock reliably is genuinely difficult.
Habitat
The species is an endemic of the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province of West-Central Africa. It is recorded from the Ntem River and its associated drainages and from the Ivindo River — a large blackwater tributary of the Ogowe (Ogooue) — and its tributaries, spanning southern Cameroon, northern Gabon, and Equatorial Guinea (Rio Muni). The type locality is the Kribi River on the Cameroonian coast. An older report from the Dja in Cameroon has not been confirmed; the most recent regional treatments regard the fish as a Lower Guinea endemic rather than a wide-ranging Congo-basin species. These are forest-stream fish, found in the small to medium watercourses that thread the equatorial rainforest. The water they inhabit is characteristically soft, acidic and tannin-stained: FishBase gives a pH range of roughly 5.0 to 6.0, a hardness of about 5 to 9 dH, and a tropical temperature band of approximately 72–79 °F — cool by the standards of most tropical aquarium cichlids, reflecting the shaded, well-canopied streams of the region. Field observations of congeners in the same Gabonese drainages found them tightly associated with deep accumulations of leaf litter over sandy bottoms in pools and slow runs, with in-situ readings as extreme as pH 4 and conductivity in the low tens of microsiemens. Like its relatives, Parananochromis longirostris is a demersal, bottom-oriented fish of these structured, low-mineral, blackwater habitats.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Parananochromis longirostris has been published, and FishBase carries no gut-content data for the species; its trophic level is given only as a model estimate of about 3.3, consistent with a small carnivore-leaning omnivore. The genus, like the chromidotilapiines generally, is best understood as a micro-predator and benthic generalist of the leaf-litter zone. Fish of this guild work over submerged leaves, soft sediment and woody debris for small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — together with whatever organic detritus and small items the litter beds yield. The long, pointed snout is well suited to picking prey from crevices among leaves and roots. In its forest-stream community the species shares the leaf-litter microhabitat with tetras, barbs, killifish, mormyrids, small catfish and, frequently, larger chromidotilapiine cichlids such as Chromidotilapia, partitioning the habitat by size and feeding station. In captivity the genus accepts a standard varied diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods readily, which confirms the opportunistic, invertebrate-focused nature of its wild feeding.
Mating
Parananochromis longirostris is a monogamous, pair-forming cichlid. Reproduction is organised around a bonded male and female that jointly hold and defend a small territory, in the manner typical of cave-spawning chromidotilapiines. Pair formation in this genus is, however, a fraught business: the fish are strongly intolerant of same-sex rivals at close quarters, and keepers who try to form pairs by crowding several fish together in a small space have repeatedly found that males in particular will fight to a single survivor. In the wild, the structural complexity of the stream — the leaf beds, root tangles and scattered cavities — gives subordinate and unpaired fish room to disperse and avoid these lethal encounters, so that pairs settle out across a heterogeneous habitat rather than in forced confrontation. Once a stable pair has established itself, the bond is comparatively durable and both partners participate in defending the spawning site, with the female taking the leading role at the nest and the male patrolling the wider territory. Courtship colour and the female's swelling, flushed abdomen are the visible signals that a pair is approaching spawning condition.
Breeding
The species is a monogamous, biparental substrate spawner — specifically a pair-bonding cave or cavity spawner. The female deposits her eggs on a concealed surface inside a sheltered cavity and tends the clutch, fanning and guarding it, while the male defends the surrounding territory; after hatching, the free-swimming fry are led and protected by the pair. No precise wild clutch count has been published for Parananochromis longirostris; congeners and other small chromidotilapiines lay modest clutches on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs, and brood care follows the standard chromidotilapiine pattern. A recurring and well-documented complication across the genus is a strongly skewed sex ratio in captive-bred broods — keepers have reported clutches yielding only a handful of males among hundreds of fry. The experienced aquarist Ted Judy, who collected and bred several Gabonese Parananochromis, traced this to environment-dependent sex determination: the genus appears, like its relative Pelvicachromis, to have sex influenced by the chemistry and temperature of the incubation microhabitat rather than by simple chromosomal inheritance. He obtained balanced sex ratios in congeners only by spawning the fish in very low-pH cavities (he measured pH around 4.5 inside moss-stuffed spawning caves) at cool temperatures of roughly 70–73 °F — conditions that mimic the acidic microhabitat deep within the streamside leaf litter where he suspected the fish spawn in nature. Notably, Judy reported that he had no success breeding the larger Parananochromis longirostris itself, even while readily spawning its smaller congeners; among the genus, longirostris has a reputation as one of the harder species to reproduce.
In the aquarium
Parananochromis longirostris is a specialist's fish, rarely available and seldom bred. It reaches the hobby only sporadically as wild imports from Cameroon, and it is not a forgiving subject: it has a reputation, even among keepers experienced with West African dwarf cichlids, as difficult both to keep in good condition and to spawn. The genus as a whole is the province of dedicated chromidotilapiine specialists rather than general community aquarists.
Water chemistry is the first hurdle. These are soft, acidic, blackwater forest fish, and they want their tank to reflect that: a pH in the rough range of 5.0–6.5, very soft and low in carbonates, and — crucially — cool. Wild and breeding temperatures sit around 72–79 °F, distinctly cooler than most tropical aquaria are run, and keepers report best results at the lower end; in practice many breeders unplug the heater entirely and let the tank track a cool room temperature. Reverse-osmosis water reconstituted to a very low hardness, stained with tannins from peat, leaf litter or bogwood, reproduces the natural envelope well. Stability and cleanliness matter, as with any soft-water specialist.
A single pair should be given a generously decorated tank of their own — something in the range of a long 75-litre (20 US gallon) footprint per pair is the working minimum reported by breeders, and more space markedly reduces the risk of fatal aggression. The decor should be structural and shaded: bogwood, a deep bed of clean sand, several small-entranced caves, dim lighting on a long-dark photoperiod, and a thick layer of boiled oak or other leaf litter, which the fish use as cover and which acidifies and conditions the water in the bargain. Floating plants such as Anubias or surface cover help subdue the lighting. Diet is straightforward: a varied menu of live and frozen invertebrate foods — daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm, blackworm — to which good-quality prepared foods can be added; conditioning females on rich live foods brings them into spawning readiness.
The single greatest pitfall is intraspecific aggression. Same-sex fish, and males above all, will not tolerate one another in confined quarters, and an attempt to colonise several fish in a small tank typically ends with one survivor. The proven approaches are to keep firmly established single pairs separately, or to maintain a group only in a large, heavily structured tank where subordinates can escape sightlines. Tankmates should be peaceful, small, and unobtrusive — soft-water dither fish such as small tetras or West African barbs suit the biotope — and nothing should be added that competes for the cavities or harasses a tending pair. Even for the keeper who manages all of this, Parananochromis longirostris specifically has frustrated experienced breeders who spawn its congeners freely, so it should be approached as a conservation-minded project fish rather than a reliable producer.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Parananochromis longirostris as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out by T. Moelants on 16 February 2009 and published in 2010; the population trend is listed as unknown, and no specific threats are recorded. The species' habitat is given as inland wetlands — the forest streams of the Ntem and Ivindo systems — and its range spans Cameroon and Gabon (with records also from Equatorial Guinea). It carries no CITES or CMS listing and is of no fisheries importance, being too small to be of food value and only sporadically collected for the ornamental trade. The Least Concern rating reflects a reasonably broad distribution across two river systems rather than any abundance data, and the unknown population trend is a genuine caveat: the Lower Guinea rainforest streams the species depends on face the regional pressures common to equatorial West-Central Africa — deforestation and conversion of stream catchments to agriculture, siltation, and localised pollution — even though none of these has been documented as a present, range-wide danger to this particular cichlid. As a soft-water, blackwater forest specialist tied to shaded, leaf-littered streams, it is the kind of narrow-niche fish whose status would be sensitive to large-scale loss of forest cover, and its true conservation picture is undersurveyed.
