Sargochromis mellandi, sometimes called the Mweru happy or snaileater, is a robust molluscivorous cichlid of the swampy lake-and-floodplain country at the southern headwaters of the Congo. It ranges through the Bangweulu, Mweru and Luapula waters of northern Zambia and the southern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it makes a living crushing aquatic snails with a heavily reinforced throat mill. Like the rest of the southern-African 'happies', it is a maternal mouthbrooder, and its appetite for the snails that carry bilharzia has earned it a sideline as a candidate for biological control.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the prolific Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1905 as Paratilapia mellandi, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, from a single specimen collected at Lake Bangweulu in what is now northern Zambia. That unique holotype (register BMNH 1905.11.10.11) still resides in the Natural History Museum, London, and remains the name-bearing anchor of the species. Over the following century the fish was shuffled through several of the catch-all genera into which the haplochromine cichlids of central Africa were repeatedly sorted: it appears in the older literature as Haplochromis mellandi and as Hemihaplochromis mellandi, and Skelton & Teugels (1991) treated it as Serranochromis mellandi before it settled into Sargochromis, the genus erected by Regan for the snail-eating 'happies' of the Zambezi system and its neighbours. Within Sargochromis the upper-Congo populations are sufficiently variable that recent surveyors of the Upemba and Kundelungu national parks refer to a 'Sargochromis mellandi species complex' rather than a single tidy taxon, flagging that the fish passing under this name across the Bangweulu-Mweru-Luapula basin may not all be conspecific. Sargochromis itself sits in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, the African haplochromine radiation, and is one of the so-called serranochromine lineage of larger predatory cichlids of south-central Africa.

Morphology

Sargochromis mellandi is a moderately deep-bodied, fusiform cichlid that reaches about 8 in in total length, making it a medium-sized member of its genus rather than one of the giants. In overall build it follows the Sargochromis template: a fairly heavy, laterally compressed body, a moderately large mouth, and a long-based dorsal fin with the spiny portion running into a soft-rayed lobe. The single most important piece of anatomy is hidden in the throat. Like all the snail-eating happies, Sargochromis mellandi carries enlarged, molariform pharyngeal teeth set on a stoutened lower pharyngeal bone — a pavement of blunt crushing teeth that functions as a nutcracker for hard-shelled prey. This molluscivore's mill is the genus's defining adaptation and separates the happies from their fish-eating Serranochromis relatives, which retain more pointed pharyngeal dentition. Coloration in life is the muted brassy-to-olive of a floodplain fish, paler below, the scales often catching a faint iridescence; breeding males of the genus typically intensify and may show the egg-spot-like markings common to haplochromines. Sexual dimorphism in Sargochromis is modest and centred on breeding condition rather than gross body form: males grow somewhat larger and colour up more strongly, while ripe females are deeper-bellied and, as mouthbrooders, carry a distended throat when holding a clutch. Detailed meristic counts for the species rest on Boulenger's original description and the regional revisions, and the natural variation across the complex means published figures should be read as a range rather than a fixed diagnosis.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the southern headwaters of the Congo drainage, specifically the Bangweulu-Mweru ecoregion and the upper Lualaba. FishBase and the regional checklists record it from the Chambeshi River and Lake Bangweulu, down the Luapula River to Lake Mweru, and into the upper Lualaba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — so its range spans both Zambia and the DR Congo. This is classic swampy floodplain-lake country. The Bangweulu-Mweru freshwater ecoregion is dominated by permanent swamps and shallow, vegetated lakes: Lake Bangweulu averages only about 33 ft deep, Lake Mweru reaches roughly 121 ft, and the lagoons between them are typically blanketed with Ceratophyllum, Utricularia, Nymphaea and other aquatic plants. The flood pulse drives the system — inundation peaks around May, opening the surrounding floodplains for fish to disperse and breed, while in the dry season decomposing vegetation can drive oxygen low enough to push fish back into the open channels. Sargochromis mellandi is a demersal fish of these warm, weedy, slow waters; the genus as a whole favours the quiet margins, channels and floodplain lagoons where its snail prey is abundant. The basin lies in the tropics (roughly 8-12 degrees S) and the water is warm year-round; specific in-situ chemistry for this species is sparsely published, but waters of this ecoregion are generally soft to moderately mineralised and run from slightly acidic to mildly alkaline. Depth records are not finely resolved, but as a shallow-water floodplain and lake-margin fish it occupies the upper few metres of the water column over soft, vegetated bottoms.

Feeding

Sargochromis mellandi is a molluscivore — a snail specialist — and that trophic role is the reason the genus exists as a recognised group. FishBase summarises its diet directly: it 'feeds primarily upon snails, but also takes other invertebrates and small fish,' placing it at a trophic level of about 3.4. The mechanics are elegant. Rather than crushing shells with the jaws, the fish takes a snail whole, works it back to the pharyngeal jaws in the throat, and there crushes the shell against the molariform pharyngeal mill, spitting out shell fragments and swallowing the soft body. This lets a relatively modest-jawed cichlid exploit a hard, well-defended food source that few other fish can open. Its taste for snails gives the species an applied dimension: snails of the genera Bulinus and Biomphalaria are the intermediate hosts of the schistosome flukes that cause bilharzia (schistosomiasis), and FishBase notes Sargochromis mellandi is 'used for snail and bilharzia control.' The much-studied congener Sargochromis codringtoni has been trialled in enclosure and laboratory experiments as a biological control agent against schistosome-carrying snails, consuming large numbers of them; Sargochromis mellandi belongs to the same snail-crushing guild. In its native floodplain community the fish functions as a benthic predator of the abundant gastropods and other invertebrates of the weedy shallows, with small fish making up the remainder of a fairly catholic diet.

Mating

As a haplochromine maternal mouthbrooder, Sargochromis mellandi reproduces without a lasting pair bond — FishBase labels it 'agamous,' meaning males and females do not form stable partnerships. In the typical pattern of this reproductive guild, which has been documented in detail for related happies and other African mouthbrooders, a ripe male establishes and defends a temporary spawning territory, often a cleared patch of substrate, and courts passing females with lateral displays and quivering. Sexual selection runs through male colour and display rather than through cooperative nest-building, and a single male may spawn with several females over a season. Once a female is gravid she approaches a displaying male, the two circle, and spawning proceeds in bouts; thereafter the male's role ends. This 'love them and leave them' system, in which the female alone shoulders all subsequent parental investment, is the ancestral and overwhelmingly common arrangement among the haplochromine cichlids of the central- and southern-African basins, and there is no evidence that Sargochromis mellandi departs from it. The flood pulse of the Bangweulu-Mweru system, which opens the floodplains around May, is the broad seasonal trigger that synchronises breeding into the warm, productive high-water period.

Breeding

Sargochromis mellandi is an ovophilic maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them there. After spawning she carries the developing clutch in her buccal cavity through the egg and yolk-sac stages, fasting or nearly so for the two-to-three weeks that brooding typically lasts in haplochromine cichlids, until the young are released as free-swimming fry. For a period after release the fry may continue to dart back into the mother's mouth when threatened, a behaviour widespread in mouthbrooders before the young are finally weaned to independence. Mouthbrooding trades quantity for quality: clutch sizes in haplochromine mouthbrooders of this body size are modest — typically on the order of a few dozen to roughly a hundred comparatively large, yolky eggs, far fewer than an open substrate-spawner of the same length would lay — but each is protected inside the parent for the most vulnerable phase of its life. Species-specific fecundity figures for Sargochromis mellandi are not well documented in the literature; the genus-typical range should be read as indicative rather than measured for this taxon. Parental care is entirely maternal, with no contribution from the male after spawning. Breeding is tied to the warm high-water season, when the flooded margins offer both cover and an abundance of the invertebrate food that growing fry require.

In the aquarium

Sargochromis mellandi is essentially an obscure fish in the aquarium hobby. It is occasionally listed as a commercial aquarium species and turns up in checklists of the Bangweulu-Mweru fishery, but it is not a regularly traded ornamental, has no settled English common name in the hobby, and there is little published first-hand keeping or captive-spawning experience to draw on. Anyone who did obtain it should plan around what is known of the genus rather than around glossy care sheets. This is a 8 in, snail-crushing, warm-water floodplain cichlid, so a single specimen or a small group needs a sizeable tank — realistically 71 in of length or more for a group, giving a dominant male room to hold a territory without cornering tankmates. A soft sand bottom suits a fish of weedy, silty shallows; robust plantings (or plastic substitutes, since a snail-eater will not respect a planted tank the way a herbivore would) and some open swimming room reproduce the floodplain-margin biotope. Water should be warm — the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, matching the tropical basin — and kept clean with good filtration but gentle flow, at a near-neutral pH spanning the soft-acid to mildly-alkaline conditions of its home waters. Feeding is the obvious novelty: this fish is built to eat snails, and a pest-snail surplus, frozen or live snails, and other hard invertebrate foods will be taken eagerly alongside standard meaty cichlid fare. Tankmate selection should respect that it is a predatory haplochromine that takes small fish, so anything bite-sized is at risk; sturdy, similarly sized riverine or floodplain cichlids and robust characins or cyprinids are more sensible companions. As a mouthbrooding male-territorial species it can be pushy at breeding time, so the usual haplochromine management of keeping one male with several females in a large, structured tank applies. In short: keepable in principle by an experienced large-cichlid keeper who can source it, but a fish kept for its biology rather than its colour, and one on which the hobby has accumulated almost no documented husbandry.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Sargochromis mellandi as Least Concern, an assessment dating to 2009. The rating reflects the species' wide distribution across the Bangweulu, Mweru, Luapula and upper Lualaba waters of two countries, the absence of any documented range-wide threat, and a biology that gives it high resilience — FishBase estimates a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months. It carries no CITES listing. That comparatively comfortable status sits against a busier regional backdrop. The Bangweulu-Mweru ecoregion is a heavily fished system — Bangweulu and Mweru-Luapula are among Zambia's most important inland fisheries — and the swamps and floodplains that the species depends on are sensitive to the usual pressures on African wetlands: altered flood regimes, sedimentation, expanding agriculture and fishing intensity. A further wrinkle is taxonomic: because surveyors now speak of a 'Sargochromis mellandi species complex,' it is possible that what is currently lumped under one Least Concern name conceals more than one lineage with narrower ranges, which would warrant reassessment. None of this is flagged as an active danger to the fish today, but it is the context in which its long-term outlook should be read.
