Rubricatochromis lifalili, the blood-red jewel cichlid, is a small, intensely coloured cichlid of the central Congo River basin, described by Paul Loiselle in 1979 from Lake Tumba in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At a touch over 3 in it is among the more compact of the African "jewel cichlids," and it carries the group's signature look to an extreme: a body that floods to a deep blood-red, scattered with rows of glittering turquoise spangles, when a pair comes into breeding condition. Long sold and even bred in the hobby under the name of its larger relative bimaculatus, it is distinguished by carrying one fewer dark blotch along the flank. A 2022 molecular revision moved the red jewels — this species among them — into the resurrected-from-new genus Rubricatochromis, though the long-familiar Hemichromis name remains in near-universal hobby and trade use.

Taxonomy & naming

The blood-red jewel cichlid was described by the American ichthyologist Paul V. Loiselle in 1979, in a paper (Revue de Zoologie Africaine 93(2): 285–298) that revised the small red 'jewel' members of the genus Hemichromis and named several new species at once — lifalili alongside cristatus, stellifer and paynei. The type locality is Lake Tumba, in what was then Zaire and is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Hemichromis as Loiselle treated it had long been understood to contain two visibly different assemblages: the larger, deep-bodied 'five-spot' or banded jewelfishes (the fasciatus/elongatus group), and the smaller, red-bodied true 'jewel cichlids' with blue spangling. Molecular work by Anton Lamboj and Stephan Koblmüller (Hydrobiologia, 2022) confirmed that these two groups are not each other's closest relatives but separate lineages, and because the type species of Hemichromis is a five-spot (Hemichromis fasciatus), the red jewels needed a new generic home. Lamboj and Koblmüller erected Rubricatochromis for them, with Rubricatochromis guttatus as type species, so that the formally current name for this fish is now Rubricatochromis lifalili (Loiselle, 1979). The hobby, the aquarium trade and a great deal of older literature still call it Rubricatochromis lifalili, and that is the name under which it is overwhelmingly searched, sold and discussed. Within the red-jewel group it sits very close to bimaculatus and guttatus and is routinely confused with both; for decades fish now recognised as lifalili were imported and propagated simply as 'Hemichromis bimaculatus.' The species name lifalili is not Latin or Greek but a local Congolese vernacular name for the fish recorded near the type locality at Lake Tumba. Populations from the vicinity of Bangui in the Central African Republic — well outside the Lake Tumba type locality — have also been tentatively assigned to R. lifalili on Loiselle's (1979) authority, though Konings notes in the Cichlids Yearbook that these fish run appreciably more delicate in build and shorter in the snout than the similar-looking H. stellifer of the lower Congo, and flags the identification as unresolved rather than settled.

Morphology

Rubricatochromis lifalili is a small, robust, moderately deep-bodied cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 3 in standard length; hobby accounts commonly cite roughly 3.5–4 in total length, with most aquarium adults finishing nearer 3–3.5 in. The body shape is the typical jewel-cichlid form — laterally compressed, with a gently sloping forehead and a fairly large mouth set for a generalist predator. Out of condition the fish is an unremarkable greyish-brown to dull olive-red, but a dominant or breeding individual transforms: the flanks deepen to a saturated blood-red, the unpaired fins and the gill cover flush a darker red still, and the whole animal is dusted with rows of small iridescent blue-green to turquoise spots that extend onto the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. This colour shift is rapid and mood-driven, fading to dull and intensifying again as the fish hides, settles or guards young. The single most useful field mark separates it from its near-twins by spot count: lifalili carries two dark blotches along each flank — one roughly mid-body and one at the base of the tail — whereas the true bimaculatus carries three, with an additional spot higher on the caudal peduncle. From the similar red form of guttatus it is told apart by the shape and position of the mid-body marking, which in lifalili is round and sits above the lateral line rather than oval and straddling it. A dark blotch also marks the upper part of the gill cover. Sexual dimorphism is weak and the species is genuinely difficult to sex by eye: males average slightly larger and a little more intensely coloured outside of breeding dress, and ripe females become visibly fuller-bodied, but there is no reliable single external character.

Habitat

The species is native to the central Congo River basin, where it is widely distributed through the lowland forest zone. FishBase summarises its range as the Congo basin excluding the Shaba (Katanga) region and the Kasai, occurring in the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the IUCN assessment, more conservatively, maps confirmed records only from the DR Congo. Faunal surveys place it across a broad swathe of the cuvette centrale — the Itimbiri, Aruwimi and Lindi/Tshopo drainages, the Mai-Ndombe region, and Salonga National Park among them — and the type locality, Lake Tumba, is a shallow blackwater lake of the northwestern basin only a few metres deep. It is a fish of still and slow-moving waters: creeks, small tributaries, lake margins and flooded forest, primarily in forested country but also in more savannah-like areas where gallery forest fringes the streams. Loiselle noted it as absent from rapids and from true swamp habitats. Despite favouring sluggish water, these habitats are typically well-oxygenated and warm. In-situ and reference chemistry runs soft, slightly acidic to neutral and warm — FishBase gives a pH of about 6.5–7.5, hardness around 2–12 °dH and temperatures of roughly 72–75 °F for the wild environment, conditions consistent with the soft, tannin-stained waters of the lowland Congo. As a habitat generalist of these forest streams and lakes, it tolerates a somewhat wider envelope than those figures alone suggest.

Feeding

Rubricatochromis lifalili is a small generalist predator — best described as a micro-carnivore that leans omnivorous. In the wild the bulk of its diet is aquatic invertebrates: insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic and drifting prey taken from the substrate, leaf litter and the water column of its forest streams. Plant and detrital material is taken incidentally, much of it arriving secondhand in the guts of the invertebrates it eats, so a vegetable component belongs in its nutrition even though it is not a dedicated grazer. Compared with the larger banded jewelfishes it is described as less predatory and more omnivorous, a difference that fits its smaller size and smaller mouth. In captivity it is an enthusiastic, undemanding feeder that accepts virtually anything offered — flake, pellet, and especially live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and small crustaceans, which bring up its colour. Interestingly, brooding parents have been observed using a sand-spitting technique to feed their fry, taking mouthfuls of substrate and releasing them into the cloud of young, which then chase and graze the settling grains — a behaviour more often associated with the eartheaters than with jewel cichlids.

Mating

Like all jewel cichlids, lifalili forms a strong, monogamous pair bond and defends a territory as a couple, and the pre-spawning phase is where its formidable temperament shows. Outside of breeding it is comparatively placid, but a fish coming into condition becomes intensely territorial and aggressive, and a bonded pair will drive other fish off a substantial area and intensify to their full red-and-turquoise breeding dress. The classic difficulty is pair formation: it is hard to simply put two adults together and get a compatible match, and an unwilling or unready partner — usually the female — can be harassed and killed by an over-vigorous mate. The reliable route, repeated throughout the hobby literature, is to raise a group of five or six young fish together and let a pair sort itself out naturally, then remove the others once the bond is obvious. A formed pair typically stays together for life. Courtship involves mutual displaying with fins spread and colours blazing, joint cleaning of a chosen spawning surface, and the digging of shallow pits in the substrate nearby that will later serve as nursery sites for the fry.

Breeding

Rubricatochromis lifalili is a biparental open-substrate spawner with well-defined pair-bonding — the textbook jewel-cichlid mode. The pair selects and meticulously cleans a flat or gently angled surface: a rock, the side of a flowerpot, a broad leaf or even the aquarium glass. The female lays adhesive eggs in rows across the cleaned site and the male follows to fertilise them, the two often trading places. Clutch size is moderate; published hobby accounts report on the order of 400–500 eggs per spawn, a striking number for so small a fish. Both parents share guard duty in the classic division of labour — the female tends, cleans and fans the eggs while the male patrols and defends the perimeter, with some role-swapping. The eggs hatch quickly, in roughly two to three days, and the parents move the wrigglers into the pre-dug pits in the substrate, shifting them between pits several times before they become free-swimming about another one to three days later. The free-swimming fry are guarded as a tight school by both parents, who will attack anything — including the keeper's hand — that approaches. Parental care is prolonged and conscientious, often continuing for around a month, after which the pair will typically be ready to spawn again. Fry are easy to start on newly hatched brine shrimp and microworm and grow quickly; keepers note that they can be aggressive and cannibalistic among themselves from an early age.

In the aquarium

The blood-red jewel cichlid is a popular and rewarding aquarium fish, but its reputation as a beginner's species deserves a caveat: it is easy to keep and easy to breed, and difficult to keep peacefully. The colours of a conditioned pair are among the most spectacular available to the freshwater hobbyist, and the parental care is a genuine pleasure to watch — but the same pair will terrorise a community tank without warning the moment it decides to spawn.

A single pair can be housed in a tank of around 29.5 in / 20 US gal, though more floor space is strongly preferable, both to disperse aggression and to allow a group of youngsters to grow out and pair off naturally. That grow-out-and-pair approach is the single most important husbandry tip for the species: buying two random adults and hoping usually ends with the weaker fish dead, whereas a group of five or six lets a stable bond form. Aquascape with plenty of structure to break sightlines and provide refuge — rockwork arranged into caves, driftwood, clay flowerpots and dense, well-rooted or potted planting — because the fish digs and will uproot anything loose. Provide flat rocks or pot surfaces as spawning sites. Well-oxygenated water is important; despite coming from sluggish habitats, these are not low-oxygen fish.

Water conditions should be soft to moderately hard and warm: temperature around 73–79 °F for maintenance (the upper end, to ~82 °F, for breeding), pH roughly 6.0–7.5, and hardness anywhere from about 4 to 15 °dH. The species has been bred for generations in harder, near-neutral tap water — one widely cited account spawned it repeatedly at pH 7.6 and 110 ppm hardness — so it does not strictly require blackwater, though slightly soft, acidic water (pH ~6.5–7.0) is the classic conditioning recommendation. Diet is a non-issue: it accepts flake, pellet and especially live and frozen foods, and a varied menu with some live food and a vegetable component keeps both colour and condition high.

Tankmate selection is the crux. Outside of breeding it can share a large tank with robust, non-cichlid companions — Congo tetras and other larger characins, Synodontis catfish, and loricariids are commonly recommended — and in a big tank with other West African cichlids such as Pelvicachromis. It is not a fish for a peaceful community of small soft-water species, nor a safe choice for the cichlid newcomer who wants a calm tank, and during spawning anything sharing the aquarium is at serious risk and is best removed. The most common keeper mistakes are underestimating the breeding aggression, forcing an incompatible pair, and treating it as a docile 'jewel' on the strength of its looks alone.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Rubricatochromis lifalili as Least Concern, assessed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010. The assessment records the species from the Democratic Republic of the Congo with an unknown population trend and notes mining and quarrying as a potential localized pressure on its wetland habitat, but flags no basin-wide threat; as a widespread habitat generalist of the central Congo lowlands it is not considered at risk. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. The broader picture is that the Congo basin remains one of the most biodiverse and comparatively intact freshwater systems in Africa, but it is increasingly exposed to deforestation, artisanal and industrial mining (with associated siltation and pollution), and the hydrological changes that come with land-use change. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, whose wide range and ecological flexibility buffer it; rather, they form the backdrop against which the long-term health of the forest-stream fauna it belongs to should be read. The species is also sustained in the aquarium trade, both as wild imports and as captive-bred and line-bred stock, which adds a measure of insurance entirely independent of its wild status.
