Taxonomy & naming
Tilapia guinasana was described in 1936 by Ethelwynn Trewavas, based on material from Lake Guinas in what was then South West Africa, now Namibia. The genus Tilapia is one of the oldest and most widely used cichlid genus names, of disputed but likely southern African vernacular origin, long applied (and, in modern taxonomy, considerably narrowed) to a large group of substrate-spawning and mouthbrooding African cichlids historically important to fisheries and aquaculture across the continent. The species epithet guinasana is a Latinised form of “Guinas,” directly naming the lake to which the species is endemic.
Morphology
Tilapia guinasana is a small, silvery, relatively unremarkable-looking tilapiine cichlid in general body form, its real distinction lying not in its anatomy but in the extreme narrowness of its distribution. Detailed meristic counts and colour pattern have not been confirmed in the sources used here beyond its general similarity to other small mouthbrooding Tilapia.
Habitat
The species is confined entirely to Lake Guinas, a roughly circular sinkhole (doline) lake formed by the collapse of a dolomite cavern in the Otavi Mountains of northern Namibia, fed by groundwater springs and lacking any permanent natural surface outlet or inlet connecting it to another water body. The lake's water is characteristically very clear, and its dolomite/karst setting gives it hard, alkaline chemistry. This isolation — a single small lake with no natural route in or out for fish — makes Tilapia guinasana's distribution one of the most extreme examples of single-locality endemism known in the cichlid family, alongside the nearby, similarly isolated Lake Otjikoto.
Feeding
Small mouthbrooding Tilapia of this kind are generally omnivorous, grazing algae and detritus and taking small invertebrates as available. No species-specific gut-content study for Tilapia guinasana has been confirmed here, so this should be read as a general expectation for the group rather than a documented account.
Mating
Courtship behaviour specific to Tilapia guinasana has not been documented in the sources used here. Small mouthbrooding Tilapia generally show male territoriality with courtship display preceding spawning, but the details for this species are not confirmed.
Breeding
Tilapia guinasana is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with the reproductive mode of related small Tilapia species, with the female incubating fertilised eggs in her mouth before releasing free-swimming fry. Clutch size and incubation period specific to this species have not been documented here.
In the aquarium
Tilapia guinasana has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade. As a legally protected, single-lake endemic in Namibia, it is not available through normal commercial channels, and any captive stocks that exist would be held for conservation or research purposes rather than the hobby market; no husbandry account specific to this species has been documented here.
Conservation
The CARES Preservation Program lists Tilapia guinasana in its most urgent category, CARES Critical (CCR), in its March 2026 Cichlidae priority list. No IUCN Red List assessment for this species could be confirmed here, though a species confined to a single small lake is, almost by definition, one of the more range-restricted freshwater fish in the world regardless of its formal Red List category. Lake Guinas is a closed, spring-fed system: there is no larger population elsewhere to buffer any local decline, and threats such as introduced fish species, changes to the groundwater supplying the lake, or any disturbance to the lake itself would fall on the species' entire global population at once. Namibia affords the lake and its endemic fish legal protection, but the fundamental vulnerability of a species whose entire world consists of one small sinkhole lake remains the defining fact of its conservation status.
