Taxonomy & naming
Tylochromis elongatus was described by the American ichthyologist Melanie L. J. Stiassny in 1989, in her monograph "A taxonomic revision of the African genus Tylochromis (Labroidei, Cichlidae); with notes on the anatomy and relationships of the group" (Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale, Sciences Zoologiques, vol. 258). That revision was the first modern, comprehensive treatment of a genus that Charles Tate Regan had erected in 1920, and it recognised on the order of two dozen species; elongatus was one of several Stiassny named as new, alongside congeners such as Tylochromis leonensis, Tylochromis praecox, Tylochromis pulcher, Tylochromis robertsi and Tylochromis variabilis. The genus sits in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and is often placed in its own tribe, Tylochromini — a structurally conservative, comparatively ancient African lineage that Stiassny, in a companion 1990 paper in American Museum Novitates, argued branches near the base of the African cichlid tree, well outside the haplochromine and lamprologine assemblages that dominate the rift lakes. Within that genus Tylochromis elongatus is distinguished by its slim build and by a meristic and osteological combination Stiassny detailed in the revision: a dorsal fin of 14 spines and about 15 soft rays, roughly 36–38 lateral-line scales, 15–16 gill-rakers on the lower limb of the first arch, 28 vertebrae, and an extremely robust lower pharyngeal jaw whose mill-like molariform teeth occupy about two-thirds of the dentigerous surface. The type series was collected from the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; no junior synonyms are attached to the name, which has stood unchallenged since 1989.
Morphology
As its name promises, Tylochromis elongatus is the slender exception in a genus of deep, slab-sided fishes — "elongatus" was coined by Stiassny in direct reference to the relatively elongate, gracile body form of the adults. It is a modestly sized cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 6 in standard length, smaller than heavyweight congeners such as the Tanganyikan Tylochromis polylepis (which can approach 17 in) or the Mweru Tylochromis mylodon (around 8.5 in). The body is laterally compressed and large-scaled, with the steep forehead and small, low-set, subterminal mouth that mark the whole genus as bottom-feeders rather than midwater hunters. The two diagnostic hard-anatomy features are internal: the genus carries two lateral lines and a distinctive pattern of head laterosensory pores, and the lower pharyngeal jaw — the second set of jaws in the throat — is exceptionally heavy, paved with rounded, mill-like molariform teeth over roughly two-thirds of its surface, a crushing apparatus typical of snail- and invertebrate-eating Tylochromis. No detailed account of live coloration has been published; preserved type material and the genus norm suggest a plain silvery-tan to brownish fish without the bold barring or nuptial colours of the lake endemics around it. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally documented for this species, and Stiassny's diagnosis is built on meristic and osteological characters rather than on any obvious external difference between the sexes.
Habitat
Tylochromis elongatus is known from a single, well-defined reach of the upper Congo: the Lualaba River between Stanley Falls (now the Wagenia Falls, at Kisangani) and the town of Kindu, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Freshwater Ecoregions of the World project treats it as one of the handful of fishes endemic to the Upper Congo ecoregion, a unit defined by the rapids that isolate the upper Lualaba fauna from the rest of the Congo system. In this stretch the Lualaba is a large, slow-flowing tropical river broken by stretches of rapids — most dramatically the 50-km series of cataracts (the "Gates of Hell") between Kongolo and Kindu — that descend from the savanna of the south into the high equatorial forest in the north. The river is bordered by riverine forest and papyrus-and-Typha swamp, broadens to several kilometres below the rapids, and is fed by clearwater eastern-highland tributaries such as the Elila, Ulindi and Lowa. No species-specific in-situ water chemistry has been published for Tylochromis elongatus, but the Lualaba here is a warm, soft, comparatively lightly mineralised equatorial river — the regional norm for Congo-basin headwaters is roughly pH 6.0–7.8 and water temperatures of about 73–82 °F. The genus as a whole is a fish of sandy and soft-bottomed shallows, lagoons and channel margins rather than open or deep water, and that is the most likely setting for this riverine species; its precise depth range in the wild has not been recorded.
Feeding
Tylochromis elongatus is a benthic forager that works the soft sediment of the river bottom for small invertebrates. Stiassny characterised the whole genus as benthic macrophages, and FishBase, following her, lists Tylochromis elongatus as probably a benthic macrophage that seems to feed mainly on insects and insect larvae. Its trophic level is estimated near 2.7 — squarely that of a low-level invertebrate-feeder, not a piscivore. Mechanically, it belongs to the genus's sand-sifting, bottom-grubbing guild: a small subterminal mouth takes in mouthfuls of sediment, and the heavy molariform lower pharyngeal jaw in the throat can crush hard-shelled prey such as snails and small bivalves before they are swallowed. That durophagous pharyngeal mill is the genus's ecological signature, even in a species that appears to lean more on softer insect larvae than on molluscs. In the Lualaba community, Tylochromis elongatus is best read as a sediment-processing invertebrate specialist sharing the river bottom with the catfishes, cyprinids and other cichlids of the Upper Congo rather than competing for the algae- or fish-based niches occupied elsewhere in the family.
Mating
Like the rest of its genus, Tylochromis elongatus is a maternal mouthbrooder that does not form lasting pair bonds — a social system in which the male's role ends essentially at fertilisation and there is no shared parental territory. FishBase, drawing on Stiassny's revision, states plainly that the species is a maternal mouthbrooder that does not pair-bond. No courtship sequence has been observed or described for this particular fish, and the genus is poorly documented behaviourally compared with the famous rift-lake flocks. The general Tylochromis picture — best seen in the better-studied Tylochromis polylepis, whose juveniles are gregarious while adults wander solitarily over sandy bottoms — is of a roving benthic forager that comes together to spawn transiently rather than holding a permanent rock or shell territory. The honest position is that pre-spawning behaviour, sexual signalling and any seasonal timing for Tylochromis elongatus remain essentially unknown, and the genus-typical mouthbrooding mode is the firmest statement that can be made.
Breeding
Breeding in Tylochromis elongatus has not been documented, in the wild or in captivity; what is reported is the reproductive mode, which is consistent across the genus. Tylochromis are maternal mouthbrooders: after spawning, the female alone takes the fertilised eggs into her buccal cavity and incubates and guards them there until the fry are well developed, while the male contributes nothing further. This is the classic African mouthbrooding template — large, yolky eggs, modest clutch sizes, and well-developed young traded against sheer numbers — rather than the biparental cave- or substrate-spawning of the Tanganyikan lamprologines. No clutch count exists for Tylochromis elongatus itself; as a genus-typical reference, females of the much larger Tylochromis polylepis have been observed carrying about 100 eggs of roughly 0.5 in diameter, and a fish of this species' smaller size would be expected to carry a correspondingly modest brood. Specific spawning triggers, incubation period, fry size at release and any post-release guarding are unrecorded for this species, and that gap is best stated plainly rather than filled with assumption.
In the aquarium
Tylochromis elongatus is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a single-river Congo endemic with no record in the ornamental trade, no published account of captive maintenance, and not even a photograph on FishBase — a fish known almost entirely from museum specimens and Stiassny's revision. Nothing here should be read as a husbandry recommendation so much as an honest extrapolation from the genus. Were such a fish ever to appear, the genus's needs are well understood: Tylochromis are open-substrate sand-sifters that need a long tank with a deep, fine sand bed they can work constantly, strong filtration to cope with the detritus they stir up, and — importantly — excellent oxygenation, as the genus is noted for marked intolerance of low dissolved oxygen. Water should mirror a warm, soft-to-neutral equatorial river (roughly pH 6.0–7.5 and about 75–82 °F) rather than the hard, alkaline rift-lake chemistry suited to the Tanganyikan members. A varied carnivore diet of frozen and live invertebrates — bloodworm, other insect larvae, small crustaceans — with quality sinking pellets would match its natural insectivory. The recurring genus-keeping mistakes apply in the abstract: do not house a sifter in a rock-stuffed mbuna-style tank, give it the floor space and sand bed it actually uses, and never mix it with congeners or look-alike sifters. In reality, anyone seeking a keepable Tylochromis will be offered Tylochromis polylepis, not this fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Tylochromis elongatus as Data Deficient (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants; the listing remains current in the 2025 Red List). The Data Deficient category reflects exactly the situation the species presents: it is known from a restricted reach of the Lualaba, has been little collected since its description, and lacks the population and ecological data needed to judge its status — the Freshwater Ecoregions assessment of the Upper Congo notes bluntly that the level of taxonomic exploration there is poor, with surveys not conducted in many years and much historical material still uncatalogued. There is no CITES listing and no documented targeted fishery. The relevant pressures are basin-scale rather than species-specific: the upper Lualaba and its catchment face deforestation, sedimentation, artisanal and increasingly mechanised gold mining (with associated mercury and turbidity), and the broad instability of a region whose freshwaters remain among the least studied in Africa. None of these is recorded as an identified threat to this particular cichlid, but for a narrow-range endemic of a poorly monitored river, the absence of data is itself the central conservation concern — there is simply no recent information against which to track its status.
