Cheirodon stenodon is a small, slender characid of the subfamily Cheirodontinae reaching just 3.3 cm standard length, native to the Paraná River basin of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915 from a type locality near Bebedouro at the junction of the Rio Grande and the Paraná, it remains one of the lesser-known members of its genus — a benthopelagic, schooling fish of warm lowland rivers and their floodplain waters, rarely encountered in the aquarium trade.

Cheirodon stenodon was originally described as Cheirodon stenodon by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1915. The type locality is Bebedouro, near the confluence of the Rio Grande and Rio Paraná in Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the current valid name as Cheirodon stenodon (Eigenmann, 1915), with the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was not originally described in its current genus.

The genus Odontostilbe belongs to the subfamily Cheirodontinae within the family Characidae — a group of predominantly small, schooling characids distributed widely across South America. Odontostilbe is characterised by features of the jaw dentition that distinguish it from the closely related genus Cheirodon, and the subfamily as a whole tends toward small body size and planktivorous or primary-consumer feeding habits. The specific epithet stenodon derives from the Greek stenos (narrow) and odon (tooth), likely referring to a feature of the dentition noted in the original description.
