Hemigrammus copei is a slender, silver-bodied characin from the lowland rivers and flooded forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Though it lacks the vivid pigmentation of the hobby's most celebrated tetras, its clean lines, active schooling behaviour, and adaptability to a broad range of water conditions have kept it a quiet staple in the ornamental trade since its earliest exports. Franz Steindachner named it in 1882 in honour of the American palaeontologist and herpetologist Edward Drinker Cope, one of the most prolific naturalists of the nineteenth century.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemigrammus copei was described by Franz Steindachner in 1882. The species is placed in the genus Moenkhausia Eigenmann, 1903, a large and ecologically diverse assemblage within the family Characidae. Moenkhausia is one of the most species-rich genera in the family, and the boundaries of the genus have been subject to ongoing revision; H. copei has remained within it through successive catalogue updates. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Hemigrammus copei (Steindachner, 1882), with the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus.

The genus name Moenkhausia honours Wilhelm J. Moenkhaus, an American zoologist who worked on freshwater fish anatomy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The specific epithet copei is a patronym for Edward Drinker Cope (1840–1897), the Philadelphia-based palaeontologist and zoologist who described hundreds of North American fossil vertebrates and made foundational contributions to New World ichthyology. Cope was a collector and correspondent during the era of intensive Amazonian fish surveys and was honoured in the scientific names of several fishes by contemporaries including Steindachner.

Morphology

Hemigrammus copei is a moderately slender, laterally compressed characin reaching roughly 2.8–3.1 in in total length, though most individuals encountered in the trade are somewhat smaller. The body is elongate and the profile relatively streamlined for the genus — less deep-bodied than some of its larger Moenkhausia relatives. The coloration is predominantly silver with a faint iridescent sheen along the flanks. A dark caudal spot or caudal peduncle mark is present, a feature shared with several other members of the genus and useful in field identification; the degree of development of this mark can vary with age and condition.

Like other characins, H. copei bears an adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins. The fins are mostly translucent or faintly pigmented. The eye is proportionally large, as is typical in tetras occupying dimly lit forest environments. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; mature females tend to be deeper-bodied and more robust than males, particularly when gravid, but the two sexes are otherwise difficult to distinguish externally.

Habitat

Hemigrammus copei occurs across a broad swath of northern and central South America, with records from the Amazon and Orinoco drainages and associated coastal river systems. Within these basins it favours lowland habitats: slow-moving or standing black-water and clear-water environments including flooded forest margins (igapó), small forest streams, and backwater lagoons associated with the main river channels. The soft, warm, acid conditions characteristic of Amazonian blackwater habitats are the typical environment for much of its range, though it also occurs in whitewater systems.

Water temperatures across its range generally fall between 22 and 82 °F, with pH from mildly acidic to near-neutral and very soft to moderately soft water. Habitat structure includes submerged root masses, leaf litter, fallen timber, and dense aquatic or marginal vegetation that provides both cover and feeding opportunities. Like most Moenkhausia species it is a mid-water to upper-water schooling fish in open areas but retreats to structural cover when stressed or threatened.

Feeding

Hemigrammus copei is an opportunistic omnivore. In the wild the diet likely consists of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface — together with small quantities of plant material, algae, and organic detritus encountered in leaf-litter and forest-stream environments. This broad dietary tolerance is a feature common across the genus and reflects the highly variable food availability in seasonal Amazonian habitats.

In captivity the species accepts a wide variety of standard aquarium foods without difficulty. High-quality flake and micropellets form a suitable staple, and the diet benefits from regular supplementation with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, and mosquito larvae. A varied diet improves condition and encourages the vibrant, active schooling behaviour that makes the species attractive in a display aquarium.

Mating

Hemigrammus copei is an egg-scattering open spawner consistent with the general characin reproductive pattern. No parental care is provided by either sex; adults show no territory defence or brood-guarding behaviour, and will readily consume their own eggs given access to them. Courtship involves active pursuit of females by males within the school, with spawning typically occurring in the early morning hours.

As with most tetras, spawning is triggered and sustained by appropriate environmental cues: slightly cooler, softer, and more acidic water than the maintenance conditions, along with the presence of fine-leaved vegetation or other substrate onto which adhesive eggs can be deposited. Males in breeding condition tend to be slimmer than gravid females, and their pursuit chases are the most reliable behavioural indicator of spawning readiness in a group.

Breeding

Breeding Hemigrammus copei in captivity follows the standard approach used for tetras in the Moenkhausia group. A separate breeding tank of moderate size — around 11–16 US gal — set up with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–6.8, hardness below 5 °dH, temperature 79–82 °F) and dense clumps of fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or synthetic spawning mops provides a suitable environment. A dim, shaded tank reduces egg predation by the adults before they can be separated.

A conditioned pair or small group is introduced in the evening; spawning typically follows in the early morning, with the female scattering adhesive eggs among the plant mass. Because the adults will eat the eggs immediately, they should be removed as soon as spawning is observed. The eggs hatch within 24–36 hours at breeding temperature, and the fry become free-swimming after another two to three days. Initial foods are infusoria and paramecia, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii once the fry are large enough to take them. Growth is fairly rapid under good conditions, and juveniles reach saleable size within two to three months.

In the aquarium

Hemigrammus copei is a straightforward, peaceful community fish suitable for a wide range of planted and community aquarium setups. It is at its best kept in a school of eight or more individuals, which encourages the natural shoaling behaviour and reduces the shyness that single specimens or small groups often display. A tank of at least 31.5 in in length provides adequate swimming space for a proper school. The species does well in soft, slightly acidic to neutral water but shows useful adaptability to a range of conditions, tolerating harder and more alkaline water than many wild-caught Amazonian tetras — a reflection of its occurrence across diverse drainages.

A planted aquarium with some open midwater swimming space, a dark substrate, and subdued or dappled lighting shows the silver flanks off to best advantage and keeps the fish relaxed and active. It is a mild-mannered species that mixes well with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish: dwarf cichlids, other tetras, corydoras, small rasboras, and pencilfish are all compatible neighbours. It will not bother ornamental shrimp as aggressively as some larger Moenkhausia species, though small shrimp larvae may be at risk. The species is hardy and undemanding once settled, and represents a reliable choice for aquarists wanting a clean, active schooling fish without strong water-chemistry requirements.

Conservation

Hemigrammus copei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its wide distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco systems and the absence of known severe localised threats suggest that, at a range-wide scale, the species is not immediately imperilled. The broad river systems it inhabits support large, connected populations, and it is not known to depend on highly specialised or restricted microhabitats.

That said, the lowland forests and floodplain habitats of Amazonia face ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and large-scale infrastructure projects, all of which degrade the seasonal flooded forests and small forest streams that tetras like H. copei depend on. The aquarium trade in Moenkhausia tetras is largely supplied by wild collection from South America; while no specific export data for H. copei are readily available, trade pressure on common, widespread Amazonian characins is generally considered modest relative to range-wide population sizes. A formal IUCN assessment would clarify the picture, but in its absence the species is presumed widespread and not at elevated conservation risk.
