  • chiribiqueteLatinized — named for Serranía de Chiribiquete and Chiribiquete National Natural Park, Colombia, where the type was collected

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon chiribiquete García-Alzate, Lima, Taphorn, Mojica, Urbano-Bonilla & Teixeira, 2020 is the valid name in the Catalog of Fishes. Hyphessobrycon is a very large genus of small tetras, currently placed in the Acestrorhamphidae. The authority carries no parentheses because the species was described in the genus it still occupies.

Morphology

Morphological detail is not recorded in the sources available to the atlas. See the original description for diagnostic characters.

Habitat

The type locality is a small stream tributary of the Río Tunia, in the Apaporis–Japurá–Amazon drainage, inside Serranía de Chiribiquete, Chiribiquete National Natural Park, Departamento del Caquetá, Colombia, at about 1°29'N, 72°52'W and 807 ft elevation. Habitat beyond this single locality is not recorded in available sources.

Feeding

Diet in the wild is not recorded. Congeners are omnivorous micro-predators and accept fine live, frozen and dry foods.

Mating

Not recorded in available sources.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for this species. Hyphessobrycon are typically egg-scattering spawners without parental care, but that is a genus-level generalisation.

In the aquarium

Sold by Imperial Tropicals under its scientific name. No husbandry data have been published that the atlas can cite. Keep a group in soft, slightly acidic water as for related tetras, and record what you learn.

Conservation

Not evaluated by the IUCN Red List as far as the atlas knows. The species lives inside a national park, which gives the habitat a degree of protection. Collection for the trade is the main conservation question for any narrow-range species, and none is documented for this one.
