Taxonomy & naming
Hyphessobrycon plumbellus was described in 2026 by Fabio C. P. Dagosta, Willian M. Ohara and Thiago J. Seren in Neotropical Ichthyology, from material collected in tributaries of the upper río Juruena and upper río Guaporé on the Chapada dos Parecis plateau, Comodoro Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. The holotype, MZUSP 112070, is 0.93 in standard length, collected from a tributary of the rio Juína near highway BR-364. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Hyphessobrycon plumbellus Dagosta, Ohara & Seren, 2026 as the valid name, placed by the Catalog in Acestrorhamphidae, subfamily Hyphessobryconinae; this atlas follows the traditional and still widely used placement of the genus in Characidae.
The describing authors note that the species had already entered the aquarium trade under an informal name before its scientific description — a pattern documented for several other recently described Hyphessobrycon. Populations from the río Juruena and río Guaporé basins differ subtly in body depth, coloration intensity and dentition (most Guaporé specimens have four large dentary teeth, most Juruena specimens have five), but the authors judged these differences insufficient for separate species status, instead interpreting the shared occurrence of H. plumbellus and several other tetra species across both basins as evidence of a historical river-capture event across the Chapada dos Parecis drainage divide.
Morphology
Hyphessobrycon plumbellus reaches at least 1.48 in standard length in the río Guaporé population, somewhat larger than the río Juruena population, which tops out around 1.15 in SL; the holotype measures 0.93 in SL. It is diagnosed among Hyphessobrycon by the absence of both a dark humeral blotch and a delimited caudal-peduncle blotch, combined with 15–18 branched anal-fin rays, four (rarely five) teeth in the inner row of the premaxilla, and inner premaxillary, maxillary and dentary teeth bearing up to seven cusps — more cusps than in most congeners.
In preserved specimens the ground colour is pale yellow with a darker dorsal midline; a narrow, subjacent dark line runs along the horizontal septum from mid-body to the caudal peduncle, becoming denser posteriorly without ever forming a distinct blotch, and a dark midlateral stripe — narrower anteriorly, broader posteriorly — extends to the tip of the middle caudal-fin rays. Living fish show a golden midlateral stripe, more conspicuous in the río Guaporé population, over a dorsum that is bluish to greyish in males and greyish-olive in females; the abdomen is silvery, sometimes light orange in mature Guaporé males, and the upper iris is red to orange.
Habitat
Hyphessobrycon plumbellus is known from three localities on the Chapada dos Parecis plateau, all in Comodoro Municipality, Mato Grosso: a tributary of the rio Piolho in the upper río Guaporé (río Madeira basin) and two nearby sites in the rio Juína basin, upper río Juruena (río Tapajós basin). The río Guaporé population inhabits a small clearwater tributary 10–16 ft wide and 2–7 ft deep, with swift current and a substrate of rocks, sand and submerged vegetation, as well as an artificial reservoir upstream of a small hydroelectric power plant — a transparent-water impoundment averaging 5 ft deep with sparse aquatic vegetation. The species is the most abundant fish recorded in this region, dominating both the natural stream reach and the reservoir; downstream of the dam it occurs alongside Saxatilia lepidota, Crenicichla sp., Characidium nambiquara, Hoplias malabaricus and Moenkhausia rubra, while only Aequidens sp. and S. lepidota were recorded with it in the reservoir itself.
Feeding
Stomach-content analysis of five cleared-and-stained paratypes found mostly filamentous algae, with smaller quantities of ants, spiders, Odonata, chironomid (Diptera) larvae, nematodes, Ephemeroptera and unidentified insect fragments — indicating an omnivorous diet weighted toward algal grazing but supplemented by opportunistic predation on small terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. Some wild individuals were noted to carry a bulge on the body caused by a nematode endoparasite.
Mating
No formal courtship or spawning observations were reported in the description. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males have proportionally deeper bodies, more vivid grayish-blue coloration extending over the dark midlateral stripe, more intensely reddish eyes, denser dark pigmentation on the dorsal, anal, pelvic and caudal fins, and proportionally longer branched anal-fin and pelvic-fin rays than females; the anal fin's distal margin is straighter in males and more concave — forming a distinct anterior lobe — in females. As a genus-level generality, Hyphessobrycon species typically pair off during dawn courtship and scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation with no parental care, but this has not been documented specifically for H. plumbellus.
Breeding
No formal captive-breeding account for Hyphessobrycon plumbellus was published in the original description, but the describing authors state that the species is already bred successfully in captivity by aquarists — to the point that ornamental fishers report low remaining commercial demand for wild-caught specimens. This suggests it responds well to the standard tetra-breeding approach used across the genus: soft, warm, slightly acidic water, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops as an egg-deposition substrate, and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation, though the species' specific fecundity, incubation period and fry-rearing requirements have not been documented in the scientific literature.
In the aquarium
Hyphessobrycon plumbellus was already established in the Brazilian aquarium trade before its formal scientific description, known informally as the 'tetra chumbinho' (little lead tetra) for the leaden blue-grey coloration of breeding males. According to the describing authors, successful captive breeding by hobbyists has substantially reduced commercial demand for wild-caught specimens, a genuinely encouraging conservation note for a species with such a restricted natural range. Its natural habitat — a small, swift, clearwater stream as well as a stable reservoir environment — suggests it tolerates a range of conditions in captivity; a well-filtered aquarium with reasonable flow, a shoal of six or more (consistent with general tetra shoaling behaviour), and a varied diet reflecting its algae-plus-invertebrate feeding habits in the wild would suit the species, though detailed aquarium-specific husbandry notes have not been published.
Conservation
Hyphessobrycon plumbellus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated (NE). The describing authors, however, explicitly recommend a status of Least Concern under IUCN criteria, citing the species' demonstrated adaptability — it thrives in both its natural stream habitat and an artificial reservoir formed by a small hydroelectric dam, where it is the dominant fish — together with reduced collection pressure from the aquarium trade thanks to successful captive breeding. The species also occurs in the main channel of the rio Juína, which enters the Nambikwara Indigenous Territory a short distance downstream of the collection site, an area likely to retain relatively pristine habitat conditions.
