Hyphessobrycon psittacus Dagosta, Marinho, Camelier & Lima, 2016 is the valid name in the Catalog of Fishes. It sits in Hyphessobrycon, placed today in the family Acestrorhamphidae. The authority has no parentheses because the species was described in this genus.

Habitat
The type locality is the Rio Papagaio, a tributary of the Rio Juruena in the upper Rio Tapajós basin, at Sapezal, Mato Grosso, Brazil (about 13°34'S, 58°24'W). The upper Tapajós is a clear-water, Brazilian Shield system; further habitat detail is not recorded in available sources.
Feeding
Diet in the wild is not recorded. Hyphessobrycon generally take small invertebrates and accept fine prepared foods.
