Makunaima guianensis is a slender, silvery tetra described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909 from the Essequibo drainage of Guyana and now known to range widely across the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and into the Amazon drainages of Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia. Reaching 6 cm total length, it inhabits clear-water streams with fine substrate, where it feeds primarily on aquatic insect larvae. Though long placed in Moenkhausia — a sprawling assemblage that served as something of a catch-all among the characins — a 2020 phylogenetic revision elevated it to the resurrected genus Makunaima; its current valid name according to Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Makunaima guianensis, though it remains widely indexed under its original genus. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2021, reflecting a broad, apparently stable distribution across multiple large river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Makunaima guianensis was originally described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1909, based on material from the rio Essequibo in Guyana. Eigenmann erected the species within Moenkhausia, the large genus he himself had established in 1903 to accommodate a diverse grouping of small to mid-sized characins from tropical South America. For most of the twentieth century the species was catalogued there without controversy, though its placement was periodically complicated by misidentification with superficially similar Moenkhausia and Astyanax relatives.

A 2015 redescription published in Zootaxa clarified the species' morphology and distribution, noting that it had frequently been confused in collections with other taxa. The redescription confirmed the type locality as the Essequibo system and documented the species' wider range into the Orinoco and Amazon basins. A subsequent molecular phylogenetic revision in 2020 then restructured part of Moenkhausia, recognising that the genus as historically circumscribed was not monophyletic; M. guianensis was among the species transferred into the resurrected genus Makunaima, giving the current valid name Makunaima guianensis (Eigenmann, 1909) — the authority remains parenthetical because the species was originally described in a different genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the governing reference for this placement. For practical purposes the species continues to circulate under its original combination in databases and the hobby literature, and it is indexed on this site under its historically prevalent name.

Morphology

Makunaima guianensis is a small, moderately slender characin reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2.4 in. The body is laterally compressed and elongate, typical of free-swimming stream tetras, with a pointed snout and a relatively large eye. Coloration in preserved and live specimens is predominantly silvery, with a distinct dark vertical humeral blotch behind the gill cover and a dark longitudinal stripe running from the humeral region toward the caudal peduncle — a pattern that overlaps with several other small Moenkhausia and Astyanax species, which contributed historically to confusion in identifications.

Diagnostic meristic characters, as documented in the Zootaxa redescription, include 5–10 teeth on the maxilla, 31–35 pored scales in the lateral line, and 21–25 branched anal-fin rays. These counts, in combination with the humeral blotch and stripe, separate M. guianensis from the most frequently confused congeners. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in detail in the literature; females are likely deeper-bodied when gravid, as in related tetras, but specific data are not available in the current sources.

Habitat

The species occupies freshwater streams across a large part of northern and central South America, with confirmed records from the rio Essequibo drainage in Guyana, the rio Orinoco system in Venezuela, and Amazon basin tributaries in Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia. Within these drainages it is characteristically found in clear-water streams over fine sand or silt substrate, in shallow water generally less than 3 ft deep, with slow to moderate current.

FishBase records water parameter tolerances of pH 5.8–7.5 and temperature 73–81 °F (73–81 °F), with hardness in the range of 8–20 dH — conditions broadly representative of nutrient-poor Neotropical lowland forest streams where blackwater or clearwater chemistry prevails. The species is classified as benthopelagic, spending time in the lower and mid water column over the stream substrate rather than holding at the surface. Its wide distribution across geographically distinct drainages suggests tolerance of moderate variation in water conditions across its range.

Feeding

Makunaima guianensis is primarily insectivorous in the wild. FishBase records its natural diet as aquatic insects, with chironomid (midge) larvae, caddisfly larvae, and Odonata (dragonfly and damselfly) nymphs among the documented prey items. This places it within the broad guild of stream-dwelling tetras that forage in and just above the substrate for benthic invertebrates, supplemented by drifting material.

In the aquarium the species can be expected to accept a wide range of small prepared and live foods. Small pellets and flake, together with frozen or live bloodworm, Daphnia, and brine shrimp nauplii, should suit it well. Providing a protein-rich component to the diet — reflecting its insectivorous wild diet — will support condition and breeding readiness. Like most small tetras it does best fed in small amounts twice daily rather than a single large meal.

Mating

Detailed observations of mating behaviour in Makunaima guianensis specifically are not documented in the available literature. Based on what is known of closely related stream tetras in the Moenkhausia and Makunaima complex, the species is expected to follow the typical characin pattern of open egg-scattering spawning, in which males and females engage in brief, active pursuits and release eggs and milt simultaneously among vegetation or over fine substrate.

In the aquarium, conditioning groups of adults with varied live and frozen foods typically stimulates spawning activity. Males of comparable species pursue gravid females energetically, and spawning itself is rapid — a brief quivering embrace between paired fish that releases a small number of adhesive eggs. No parental behaviour is anticipated; the adults will ignore or consume the eggs after spawning.

Breeding

Makunaima guianensis has not been the subject of detailed captive breeding reports in the accessible literature. Extrapolating from the general biology of stream-dwelling Moenkhausia-group tetras, breeding in captivity would proceed via egg-scattering over fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops in a separate, well-conditioned tank. Slightly acidic, soft water (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness) warmed to the middle of the species' temperature range (around 77–79 °F / 77–79 °F) is likely to favour spawning.

Eggs in related species are small, semi-adhesive, and scattered in modest numbers per spawning event. Incubation at 77–79 °F typically takes 24–48 hours in closely related tetras, with fry becoming free-swimming two to three days after hatching. Adults should be removed after spawning to prevent egg predation. The tiny fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii.

In the aquarium

Makunaima guianensis is not a common aquarium species and is rarely found in mainstream hobby trade, but it would be suitable for a soft to moderately hard clearwater biotope aquarium representing the Guiana Shield or Orinoco drainages. A well-filtered tank of 23.6 in or more in length, planted with fine-leaved vegetation and furnished with sandy substrate and some surface cover, would replicate its natural environment and allow it to display naturally.

As a schooling species it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals; solitary or paired specimens of small tetras typically become shy and stressed. The species' tolerances (pH 5.8–7.5, 73–81 °F) mean it is compatible with a wide range of community fish from similar Neotropical drainages — other small tetras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids, and small corydoras would make appropriate tankmates. Its small size and likely gentle disposition make it unsuitable for housing with significantly larger or more aggressive species.

Conservation

Makunaima guianensis was assessed by the IUCN Red List in 2021 and assigned a status of Least Concern (LC). The assessment reflects the species' extensive distribution across multiple large, hydrologically intact South American river systems — the Essequibo in Guyana, the Orinoco in Venezuela, and parts of the Amazon basin in Brazil, Colombia, and Bolivia — and the absence of evidence of a significant or rapid population decline. The species has high population resilience according to FishBase's resilience scoring, and low recorded fishing vulnerability.

No major threats specific to this species are identified in the current assessment. Broader habitat pressures relevant to Neotropical stream fish — including deforestation, sedimentation, and agricultural runoff in parts of its range — are the most plausible future concerns, but at present the wide distribution across politically and geographically distinct regions provides meaningful redundancy. Collection for the ornamental trade is minimal given the species' low hobby profile.
