Moenkhausia vittata is a small characid from the Atlantic Forest drainages of eastern Brazil, described originally from the Rio Doce and subsequently recorded from the adjacent Mucuri basin. A compact, silver-bodied tetra reaching under 8 cm, it inhabits the clear and dark-water streams threading through one of South America's most degraded biomes. The species has attracted scientific attention out of proportion to its size: its taxonomic history stretches across nearly 150 years and multiple reclassifications, and the Rio Doce itself — its type locality — became an international symbol of freshwater catastrophe after the 2015 Samarco tailings dam collapse.

Taxonomy & naming

Moenkhausia vittata was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1877 under the name Tetragonopterus doceanus, with the type locality given as the Rio Doce in Brazil. Type specimens are deposited in the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris (MNHN) and the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien in Vienna. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records that the species was subsequently placed in the genus Moenkhausia and recognised as valid by Zarske & Géry (2001–2002) and Benine (2002), a status upheld by multiple authors through 2017.

A published redescription documented in detail the morphological characters supporting the species' validity within the Northeastern Mata Atlântica ecoregion. However, more recent systematic work has complicated the picture: Silva & Malabarba (2016) and subsequently Marinho & Benine (2024) concluded that M. vittata is a junior synonym of Moenkhausia vittata (Castelnau, 1855), the earlier name taking priority under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Workers following Catalog of Fishes should treat the current status as synonymised, though the name doceana continues to appear in regional biodiversity literature under the Northeastern Mata Atlântica ecoregion context.

A broader molecular reassessment of the 'Characidae' has placed Moenkhausia and its allies in the family Acestrorhamphidae, removing them from a more narrowly circumscribed Characidae. This realignment remains in flux across databases, and the practical effect on identification and husbandry is nil; the species is treated here under Characidae in the traditional sense.

This fish was long listed as Moenkhausia doceana; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Moenkhausia vittata, the valid name followed here.

Morphology

Moenkhausia vittata is a relatively slender, laterally compressed tetra reaching a recorded maximum of 3 in standard length in males and unsexed specimens (FishBase). Like most members of the genus it has the typical characid body plan: a moderately fusiform profile, a complete lateral line, a small adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin.

Published redescription work characterised the species' meristics and pigmentation in detail, distinguishing it from the handful of other Moenkhausia present in the Doce and Mucuri drainages. The colouration is predominantly silvery, with a dark lateral stripe running from the mid-body toward the caudal peduncle and a caudal spot that grades into the stripe. Data on live colouration under aquarium lighting is sparse in the available literature, and the species is rarely if ever kept deliberately in the hobby.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Doce (Rio Doce) and Mucuri river basins in the state of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, in eastern Brazil. Both drainages fall within the Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion, a region of exceptionally high fish endemism but also severe deforestation and degradation. The Doce is one of the longest rivers entirely within Brazil, descending from the highlands of Minas Gerais to the Atlantic coast, and its icthyofauna includes a high proportion of species found nowhere else.

M. vittata occupies subtropical freshwater environments and has been recorded in benthopelagic and mid-water positions in streams and smaller rivers. No detailed habitat preference data (microhabitat, substrate association, depth range, or seasonal movement) are available in the sources consulted. Water chemistry records for the upper Doce system show wide variation depending on tributaries and season; the broader Moenkhausia genus spans a range of soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral tropical and subtropical waters.

Feeding

FishBase assigns M. vittata a trophic level of 3.4, placing it as a mid-level predator of small invertebrates and aquatic organisms — a feeding position typical of small tetras. The genus Moenkhausia as a whole is characterised by opportunistic omnivory in the wild, with diets documented in related species that include small crustaceans, insect larvae, surface-fallen arthropods, fine plant matter, and algae.

No stomach-content study specific to M. vittata appears in the sources consulted. Given the trophic level and the ecology of similar-sized Moenkhausia, the species likely forages throughout the water column on whatever small invertebrate prey and organic material is seasonally available in its turbulent, forested-stream habitat.

Mating

No primary breeding observations for Moenkhausia vittata are documented in the literature consulted. Based on the reproductive biology of the genus — well-studied in species such as M. sanctaefilomenae and M. oligolepis — the species is expected to be a typical egg-scattering open spawner with no parental care.

Males in related Moenkhausia court females with lateral displays and brief chases, with spawning taking place in pairs or loose groups among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation. Spawning in the wild is presumably tied to rainy-season cues (rising water levels, falling temperatures) in the subtropical Doce and Mucuri drainages, though no seasonal breeding data for this species have been published.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for M. vittata are absent from the hobbyist literature; it is not a fish kept or traded deliberately in the aquarium hobby and no established captive protocol exists. Based on close relatives in the genus, the species would be expected to scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with eggs hatching within roughly 24–36 hours at warm temperatures and fry becoming free-swimming a few days later.

The adults would offer no parental care and would consume eggs if given the opportunity. In captive trials of related Moenkhausia, conditioning on live or frozen foods, a slight temperature increase to around 81–84 °F, and softer, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0) have been used to trigger spawning. These parameters are reasonable starting points if the species were ever to be maintained in captivity, but they remain extrapolations from congeners rather than observations of doceana itself.

In the aquarium

Moenkhausia vittata is not established in the ornamental fish trade and is essentially unknown in hobby literature. The species' home drainages are not a primary source of aquarium fish collection, and it has not attracted the attention given to more colourful or larger Moenkhausia species.

Any aquarist who did obtain this species would be working from first principles, guided by the general Moenkhausia template: a peaceful, active schooling fish best kept in groups of six or more in a planted aquarium with some open swimming space, neutral to slightly acidic soft water, and a varied diet of flake, frozen, and live foods. Water temperature in the subtropical range (72–79 °F) would be appropriate given the Doce basin's elevation and latitude. The scarcity of information means that detailed aquarium records from any keeper would constitute a genuine contribution to knowledge of the species.

Conservation

Moenkhausia vittata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). Its restricted range — two adjacent river basins within the Brazilian Atlantic Forest — and the severe threats facing that biome make it a candidate for future assessment. The Northeastern Mata Atlântica freshwater ecoregion to which it belongs is recognised as one of the most threatened freshwater regions in South America, with extensive deforestation of riparian zones, agricultural and industrial pollution, and the introduction of non-native species.

The Rio Doce's type locality status for this species became tragically significant in November 2015, when the collapse of the Fundão tailings dam at the Samarco iron ore mine released approximately 40–60 million cubic metres of iron ore waste into the Doce river system. The resulting plume killed most aquatic life for hundreds of kilometres downstream and reached the Atlantic coast. Long-term surveys conducted after the disaster documented catastrophic losses of endemic fish species throughout the drainage. Whether M. vittata (or the M. vittata population to which it may be synonymised) survived in upper tributaries or the Mucuri basin as a refuge population is not documented in the sources consulted.

Additional pressure comes from introduced species: Cichla kelberi, a large piscivorous peacock bass native to Amazonian drainages, has been documented in sympatric lake habitats within the Doce basin, where it poses an established threat to native small-bodied fishes.
