Taxonomy & naming
The German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther described this fish as Heros autochthon in 1862, on page 299 of the fourth volume of his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum. (It is worth correcting a common slip here: the original combination is Heros autochthon, not Acara autochthon — the association with the old catch-all genus Acara comes only from a later remark by Hensel, who named the related acaroides for its resemblance to "Acara" autochthon.) Günther based the name on four specimens, labelled a–d, "presented" by Lord Stuart — most plausibly the British diplomat Charles Stuart, ambassador to Brazil in the mid-1820s — with no collector, date, or locality beyond the single word "Brazil." Three of the syntypes survive in the Natural History Museum, London as BMNH 1961.7.7.2–4; a fourth was not found. Felipe Ottoni designated a lectotype (BMNH 1961.7.7.6) in 2012, but that specimen turned out to be the catch: examination by Ottoni and Bragança in 2021 showed it had been preserved differently from the others, bore essentially no original label data, and may not even belong to the type series, leading them to argue the name was best regarded as a nomen dubium.
The genus shuffle is dizzying. Over time the species was carried under Heros, then under Cichlasoma (where it sat from Regan's work in 1905 until the 1980s), variously synonymised with Cichlasoma facetum, then resurrected, and finally drawn into Australoheros — the genus Říčan and Kullander erected in 2006 for the "Cichlasoma" facetum group of southern South America. Říčan and colleagues (2016) went so far as to list it as a valid Australoheros species, Australoheros autochthon, but without supporting argument. The matter was settled, for now, by Lucena, Kullander, Norén and Calegari's 2022 PLOS ONE revision ("Conjectures and refutations"), a morphological-and-molecular study of the coastal Australoheros. They re-examined the surviving syntypes, found nothing that distinguishes them from several valid eastern-Brazilian species, and formally synonymised Heros autochthon — together with Australoheros barbosae, Australoheros macacuensis, Australoheros mattosi, Australoheros montanus, Australoheros paraibae, Australoheros robustus and Australoheros tavaresi — under Australoheros oblongus (Castelnau, 1855), the senior available name. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (updated 2026) follows this and gives the current status flatly: synonym of Australoheros oblongus. FishBase and the GBIF backbone still carry "Australoheros autochthon" as a separate accepted entry, a lag between the aggregators and the primary literature rather than a real disagreement about the fish.
Morphology
Because the name has no diagnosable identity of its own, there is no meaningful set of measurements that belongs uniquely to "autochthon" — its own type series is faded, partly decalcified, and, in Lucena et al.'s judgement, indistinguishable from a handful of valid congeners. What can be said honestly is what the fish is as a member of Australoheros and, specifically, of Australoheros oblongus, into which it falls. These are deep-bodied, laterally compressed heroine cichlids with the high, steeply-rising forehead typical of the genus and a colour scheme built on a series of dark vertical trunk bars over a tan-to-olive ground, often flushing reddish or coppery on the flanks and unpaired fins in breeding condition. The single most useful generic feature — and the one that derailed early attempts to place autochthon — is an interruption of the mid-dorsal portion of trunk bars 6 and 7, which Ottoni could not clearly see in the faded type. On size, the type series and the Australoheros oblongus material examined by Lucena et al. run to roughly 3–4 in in standard length (snout to tail base), and other species in the genus reach about 4.5 in SL, with the largest congener, Australoheros facetus, recorded near 7 in SL at around ten years of age. A reasonable maximum for this fish is therefore on the order of 4–4.5 in SL; the figure carried here is a genus-/Australoheros oblongus-typical value rather than a measurement of a specimen labelled autochthon, and is flagged as such. Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow larger and develop longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fins, while ripe females are deeper-bodied and show the more intense breeding colour — again, a genus-typical statement, since the type material is too poor to sex.
Habitat
The type locality is, frustratingly, just "Brazil." The traditional guess of Rio de Janeiro city rests only on Lord Stuart's likely port of departure, and Ottoni and Bragança point out that no Australoheros lineage is actually known from within the city itself, so even that is speculation. Mapped instead onto Australoheros oblongus — the valid species the name now belongs to — the range is southeastern Brazil's Sudeste region, where Australoheros oblongus has been recorded across an unusually broad set of drainages for the genus: the Rio Paraíba do Sul, the short coastal Rio Macacu and Rio Guandu systems near Guanabara Bay, the upper Rio Doce, the upper Rio São Francisco, and headwaters of the upper Paraná (Rio Tietê and Rio Grande). Throughout, Australoheros are fish of small, often shaded streams and of vegetated, slow or still water — marginal weed beds, pools, and lentic backwaters rather than big open river channels. No in-situ chemistry attaches to the autochthon types specifically, but the genus as a whole occupies warm-temperate to subtropical fresh water that is typically soft to moderately mineralised and near-neutral; many of these coastal and upland streams are shallow, on the order of well under a metre to a couple of metres deep over sand, gravel, rock and leaf litter. The depth band given here is that habitat-typical shallow-stream figure, flagged as inferred from genus habitat rather than from a measurement tied to this name.
Feeding
There is no published gut-content study for autochthon as such, but the genus is consistent enough to generalise responsibly. Australoheros are benthic-leaning omnivores: FishBase places the species at a trophic level near 3.2, and the limited dietary observations summarised in the 2022 revision describe a diet of small fishes and benthic invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae and other small bottom animals, supplemented by plant and detrital material. In the stream-and-backwater communities they inhabit they function as mid-level generalist predators of the substrate and weed margins — picking, grubbing and snapping at small prey rather than specialising as dedicated sand-sifters or algae-scrapers. This omnivorous flexibility is part of why several Australoheros tolerate disturbed and marginal habitats so well.
Mating
Nothing was recorded about the reproduction of Günther's "autochthon" specimens, so what follows is the well-established behaviour of Australoheros, observed repeatedly both in the wild literature and by aquarists keeping the genus. These are monogamous, biparental cichlids that form strong pair bonds and become markedly territorial as a pair around the chosen spawning site. Pair formation is preceded by colour intensification — the reddish and coppery breeding dress noted above — and by jaw-locking, lateral displays and substrate cleaning. Once bonded, a pair defends a compact territory jointly and aggressively against conspecifics and other fish, and unpaired or surplus individuals confined with them are frequently harried; keepers of the genus consistently report serious intraspecific aggression in too-small quarters. In temperate populations a seasonal cool period appears to prime spawning, with reproduction concentrated in the warming months that follow.
Breeding
Australoheros are open, substrate-spawning cichlids with full biparental care — the classic "chanchita" pattern. A pair cleans a flat hard surface (a stone, a root, a broad leaf, or in aquaria a slate or pot) and the female lays a sheet of adhesive eggs on it, which both parents then guard and fan; the wrigglers are typically moved to one or more pre-dug pits, and the free-swimming fry are escorted and defended by both adults as a tight school. Clutch sizes in the genus run from roughly one to several hundred eggs depending on the size and condition of the female. Specific egg counts for this name do not exist, so the figure given is a genus-typical range, flagged accordingly. Hobbyists keeping the temperate Australoheros report that a winter cool-down followed by warming and good live feeding reliably triggers spawning, with pairs breeding while still small — sometimes under 3 inches — and producing successive broods through the warm season. The young grow readily on standard fry foods once free-swimming.
In the aquarium
Because Australoheros autochthon is not a currently valid species — its name is now treated as a synonym of Australoheros oblongus — no aquarist has ever knowingly kept a fish labelled autochthon with confidence it was something distinct. What the hobbyist literature does contain are accounts of keeping Australoheros oblongus and several other "chanchito"-group Australoheros, and those accounts form the honest basis for what follows. Where the generalisation extends beyond documented Australoheros oblongus specifically to the genus, that is noted.
The most important fact about any Australoheros in a home aquarium is that it is a subtropical fish from warm-temperate southeastern Brazil, not a tropical cichlid. Water temperatures in the 64–75 °F range are ideal; short peaks into the upper 20s are tolerated but chronic tropical temperatures (86 °F and above) stress the fish. A seasonal cool period in the range of 59–64 °F for several weeks during winter is widely reported by keepers to improve long-term health and to reliably prime subsequent spawning. Hobbyists maintaining these fish without a cool rest period often find breeding reluctant and note that the fish age faster. pH is forgiving — anywhere from roughly 6.0 to 7.8 suits them, and the soft-to-moderately-hard water typical of southeastern Brazil is the target, though they tolerate moderate hardness well. Unfiltered tap water left to off-gas overnight is usually adequate in most temperate climates.
Tank size is where keepers consistently under-estimate the fish. At around 4–4.5 in standard length a single adult is not enormous, but a territorial pair during breeding commands a substantial defended zone and pursues any competitor with determination. A 200-litre (roughly 4-foot) tank is a minimum sensible footprint for a pair alone; a 300-litre or larger tank is needed if any other fish are to share the space. Décor should include flat stones, broad roots or pieces of slate that serve as potential spawning sites, and dense plantings or visual barriers at each end of the tank to let subdominant fish escape line-of-sight. Fine sand or small-gravel substrate suits their benthic foraging and pit-digging behaviour. They are reasonably vigorous diggers and will uproot fine-rooted plants near a spawning site, so robust, heavy-rooted plants or those attached to hardscape (Java fern, Anubias) hold up better than plants left loose in substrate.
Tankmate selection demands caution. Cichlid Forum keepers of closely related Australoheros repeatedly report that a spawning pair becomes dangerous to anything sharing the tank: smaller cichlids, similarly sized peaceful fish, and even robust livebearers have been killed or badly damaged. Keeping a pair alone in a species tank is the safest approach. If a community is attempted, large, robust, fast fish that can hold their own — robust South American tetras, larger Corydoras groups, or plecos — have the best chance of coexistence outside the immediate breeding season. No Australoheros should be kept with other cichlids of similar size unless the tank is very large and heavily broken up. Intraspecific aggression between males is also sharp, so a pair with stable pair-bonding is preferable to multiple adults of the same sex.
Difficulty is moderate for an experienced cichlid keeper and moderately challenging for a beginner. The temperature requirement (and the need for a cool period to breed) rules out the simple plug-in tropical heater set-and-forget approach. Feeding is unproblematic: the fish are eager, benthic-leaning omnivores that readily accept quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and occasional live food. A common keeper mistake is feeding too much protein-rich food without variety, which contributes to bloat and kidney stress; a mixed diet with some vegetable matter (spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetable) is worthwhile. A second common error is removing the cool rest period for convenience and then finding the fish never spawn and decline in condition by mid-life. Given correct water temperature management, stable water quality and a matched pair, this is a rewarding, actively parental fish whose courtship and fry-guarding behaviour is genuinely engaging to observe.
Conservation
Neither Australoheros autochthon nor its senior synonym Australoheros oblongus has been assessed by the IUCN Red List; both stand as Not Evaluated, and the name carries no CITES or CMS listing. Read literally, "autochthon" cannot have a conservation status because it is not a valid species — it is a name now folded into Australoheros oblongus. That broader species is geographically widespread across several southeastern-Brazilian basins, which on its face suggests it is not narrowly imperilled. The relevant pressures are basin-level rather than species-specific: the small coastal and upland streams of the Sudeste — the Paraíba do Sul corridor especially — are among the most heavily urbanised, dammed and pollution-loaded freshwater systems in South America, with deforestation, water abstraction and the spread of non-native fishes all bearing on their small endemic cichlids. None of this is documented as a present threat to this particular lineage, but it is the backdrop against which any future assessment of Australoheros oblongus would have to be read. The honest bottom line is that this is a name in want of a fish, and a fish (Australoheros oblongus) in want of an assessment.
