Serrapinnus littoris was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Géry in 1960. The parenthetical authority indicates that the species was originally placed in a different genus and subsequently transferred to Odontostilbe. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; as of current records, Serrapinnus littoris (Géry, 1960) is the accepted binomial.
