Troglonectes is a genus of cave loaches in family Nemacheilidae, found only in the karst cave systems of China. The genus name itself signals its lifestyle - fish adapted to life underground, in the atlas's case entirely within Chinese cave and subterranean stream systems. Atlas species run 2–3 in, and cave-dwelling nemacheilids of this kind typically show the classic troglomorphic traits of reduced eyes, thinner pigmentation, and heightened reliance on non-visual senses to navigate in perpetual darkness, though the degree of adaptation varies species to species and is best confirmed against a specific species account rather than assumed for the whole genus.
Troglonectes is essentially a genus of scientific rather than aquarium interest - true cave fish of this kind are not part of the ornamental trade, and each species is typically known from only one or a handful of cave systems, a degree of range restriction that makes them inherently vulnerable even where formal assessment has not caught up. That gap shows in the atlas data: five of the six atlas species are Not Evaluated for conservation status, with only one confirmed Least Concern, reflecting how little survey and assessment work has reached this narrowly distributed, hard-to-access subterranean genus.
