Troglonectes chenlixini is a blind, unpigmented cave loach described in 2026 from the same single subterranean stream near Damo Village in Guangxi, southern China, as its close relative T. bottazzii — an unusually rare case of two Troglonectes species living together in one cave waterbody. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loach family, within the small cave-endemic genus Troglonectes. T. chenlixini is a slenderer, fully scaleless fish with well-developed barbels and just 12 branched caudal-fin rays, a combination that reliably tells it apart from its cave-mate and every other described Troglonectes, despite sharing the same karst pool.

Taxonomy & naming

Troglonectes chenlixini was formally described in 2026 by Jia-Jun Zhou, Ye-Wei Liu and Li-Na Du, in a paper by Du, Gu, Liu, Zhou, Wang & Shen published in the journal Taxonomy, alongside a second new species from the same cave, T. bottazzii. Both were collected from a subterranean stream — Dagouhe, a tributary of the Liujiang River system in the Pearl River basin — at Damo Village, Bagong Town, Jinchengjiang County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

The genus Troglonectes comprises small, cave-associated nemacheilid loaches endemic to the karst landscape of Guangxi and Guizhou provinces, with roughly 13 species recognized before this paper's two additions. A mitochondrial phylogeny built from cytochrome b and COI sequences placed T. chenlixini as sister to a clade containing T. dongganensis, T. jiarongensis, T. longibarbatus and T. elongatus, distinct from and only distantly related to its own cave-mate T. bottazzii — evidence that the two species' shared cave was colonized independently rather than through speciation within the cave itself.

Morphology

The holotype measures 2.19 in standard length, with paratypes ranging 1.61–2.19 in SL (1.95–2.63 in total length) — a notably slenderer fish than its cave-mate T. bottazzii. The description gives a dorsal fin of three unbranched plus 8 branched rays, a pectoral fin of 11 branched rays, and just 12 branched caudal-fin rays; this ray count, non-overlapping with the 14 seen in T. bottazzii, is the single diagnostic character that separates T. chenlixini from every other member of the genus.

Like other Troglonectes it shows a full suite of cave (troglomorphic) adaptations: eyes are completely absent, and caudal adipose keels run along both the upper and lower edges of the long, laterally compressed caudal peduncle. Unlike its cave-mate T. bottazzii, T. chenlixini is entirely scaleless across the whole body, and its three pairs of barbels — inner rostral, outer rostral and maxillary — are comparatively long and well developed rather than reduced. In life the body is translucent milky white with the myomeres and internal organs visible through the skin; the pink opercula and abdomen, and the visible stomach and intestine, reflect the loss of pigment typical of obligate cave fish. No clear sexual dimorphism was reported for this species, in contrast with the nuptial cheek tubercles seen in males of T. bottazzii.

Habitat

Troglonectes chenlixini is known only from a single cave at Damo Village, Bagong Town, in the karst hills of Hechi City, Guangxi — the same site and the same subterranean stream, Dagouhe (a tributary of the Liujiang River, part of the Pearl River basin), as its congener T. bottazzii. Water discharge is low, and during the dry season the stream contracts to a series of small puddles roughly 1–7 ft deep rather than a continuous flow.

Congeneric sympatry of this kind is rare among Troglonectes, whose members are typically confined to their own separate karst caves. The describing authors argue that T. chenlixini's slenderer body, longer barbels and fewer fin rays, set against T. bottazzii's more robust build, larger mouth and shorter barbels, point to niche partitioning in microhabitat use and feeding ecology that lets the two species share one cave pool without direct competition.

Feeding

No diet study has been published for Troglonectes chenlixini specifically; the original description records only its digestive anatomy — a U-shaped stomach and a straight intestine running directly to the anus, encased in the dumbbell-shaped bony capsule typical of the genus. Its well-developed, long barbels, in contrast with the shorter, reduced barbels of its cave-mate T. bottazzii, are singled out by the describing authors as a likely sign of a different sensory and feeding strategy — using touch more heavily to locate food in the dark.

Beyond that anatomical and comparative detail, diet is presumed rather than documented: like other cave nemacheilids, it most likely forages over the cave-stream bed for whatever small invertebrate life is present in this food-poor subterranean environment.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been observed or reported for Troglonectes chenlixini, and the original description notes no clear sexual dimorphism in the species — unlike its cave-mate T. bottazzii, whose nuptial males develop cheek tubercles.

Given the total darkness of its cave habitat, any courtship in this species would necessarily depend on touch, chemical cues, or the lateral line system rather than visual signals — its well-developed barbels would plausibly serve such a role — but this is inference from anatomy and habitat, not an observed behaviour.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Troglonectes chenlixini in the wild or in captivity. Nemacheilid stone loaches generally are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over the substrate with no parental care, and this species is presumed to follow that pattern based on its family, but the presumption has not been confirmed by direct observation.

The species has never been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby, and as a blind cave endemic collected from a single site in China, it has no realistic prospect of entering the trade.

In the aquarium

Troglonectes chenlixini is not an aquarium fish and should not become one — it is a blind, depigmented obligate cave dweller known from a single subterranean waterbody that it shares with its congener T. bottazzii, and collecting it for the trade would put real pressure on an extremely restricted population. No hobbyist care information exists, and none should be extrapolated here beyond noting that, like other Troglonectes, it would require constant cool water, complete darkness or very low light, and the gentle water chemistry typical of karst cave systems.

This fish belongs in its cave, not a tank, and its conservation value lies entirely in the intact ecosystem it and T. bottazzii share.

Conservation

Troglonectes chenlixini has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2026 from a single cave site, it has simply not yet been formally assessed. It should be treated as inherently vulnerable rather than assumed safe.

Single-cave endemism is the defining conservation risk here: the entire known population of both T. chenlixini and its cave-mate T. bottazzii occupies one subterranean stream in the karst landscape of Hechi City, Guangxi. Karst cave systems in this region face pressures from groundwater extraction, pollution, and disturbance of cave entrances, though no population trend or threat assessment specific to this species has been published. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this fish.
