Troglonectes bottazzii is a blind, unpigmented cave loach described in 2026 from a single subterranean stream near Damo Village in Guangxi, southern China, a tributary of the Liujiang River within the Pearl River basin. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loach family, within the small cave-endemic genus Troglonectes, and it was collected alongside a second new species, T. chenlixini, in the very same cave pool — an unusually rare case of two closely related cave loaches sharing one waterbody. T. bottazzii is distinguished from its cave-mate and all other Troglonectes by scales retained behind the dorsal fin, a comparatively large mouth, and weakly developed barbels, differences the describing team read as a sign the two species have split the cave's food and space between them.

Taxonomy & naming

Troglonectes bottazzii was formally described in 2026 by Jia-Jun Zhou, Ye-Wei Liu and Li-Na Du, in a paper by Du, Gu, Liu, Zhou, Wang & Shen published in the journal Taxonomy, alongside a second new species from the same cave, T. chenlixini. Both were collected from a subterranean stream — a tributary called Dagouhe, part of the Liujiang River system in the Pearl River basin — at Damo Village, Bagong Town, Jinchengjiang County, Hechi City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China.

The genus Troglonectes was established in 2016 for a group of small, cave-associated nemacheilid loaches endemic to the karst country of Guangxi and Guizhou provinces, built around the earlier-described Oreonectes furcocaudalis and since expanded by transfers from Oreonectes and Triplophysa as well as further new descriptions; roughly 13 species were recognized before this paper added two more. A mitochondrial phylogeny built from cytochrome b and COI sequences placed T. bottazzii as sister to T. barbatus, with strong statistical support, confirming it as a genetically distinct lineage rather than a colour variant of a known species.

Morphology

The holotype measures 2.77 in standard length, with paratypes ranging 1.69–2.77 in SL (2.11–3.38 in total length); it is a robust-bodied loach for its genus, with body depth greatest just ahead of the dorsal fin. The description gives a dorsal fin of three unbranched plus 9–10 branched rays, a pectoral fin of 12–13 branched rays, and 14 branched caudal-fin rays — the highest branched caudal-ray count recorded in the genus and, together with its retained squamation, the character combination that separates it from all congeners.

Like other Troglonectes it shows a full suite of cave (troglomorphic) adaptations: eyes are completely absent, and caudal adipose keels run along both the upper and lower edges of the long, laterally compressed caudal peduncle. Unlike most of its relatives, however, T. bottazzii retains true scales on the body behind the dorsal-fin origin rather than being fully naked-skinned, and its mouth is notably larger than that of its cave-mate T. chenlixini, while its three pairs of barbels are comparatively short and weakly developed. In life the body is translucent milky white with the myomeres and internal organs visible through the skin; the pink opercula and abdomen, and the visible stomach and intestine, are typical of the loss of pigment seen in obligate cave fish. Nuptial males develop a series of small tubercles on the cheeks, a feature absent in females — the only sexual dimorphism reported. Curiously, specimens reared under visible light were noted to develop melanin pigmentation on the body surface, showing the depigmentation is a developmental/physiological response to darkness rather than an irreversible loss.

Habitat

Troglonectes bottazzii is known only from a single cave at Damo Village, Bagong Town, in the karst hills of Hechi City, Guangxi — specifically Dagouhe, a small subterranean tributary of the Liujiang River, itself part of the Pearl River basin. Water discharge in the cave is low, and during the dry season the stream contracts to a series of small puddles roughly 1–7 ft deep rather than a continuous flow.

What makes the site unusual is that T. chenlixini, the second species described in the same paper, occurs in exactly the same cave waterbody. Congeneric sympatry like this is rare among Troglonectes, whose members are typically isolated in their own separate karst caves; the describing authors argue the two species' distinct mouth size, barbel development and squamation point to niche partitioning — different microhabitat use or feeding style — that lets them coexist without direct competition.

Feeding

No diet study has been published for Troglonectes bottazzii specifically; the original description records only its digestive anatomy — a U-shaped stomach and a straight intestine running directly to the anus, encased in the dumbbell-shaped bony capsule typical of the genus. Its comparatively large mouth, noted in the original diagnosis, is one of the features the authors single out as potentially reflecting a different feeding strategy from its smaller-mouthed cave-mate T. chenlixini, part of the broader case they make for niche partitioning between the two.

Beyond that anatomical detail, diet is presumed rather than documented: like other cave nemacheilids, it most likely forages by touch and taste over the cave-stream bed for whatever small invertebrate life — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, detritus-associated organisms — is present in this food-poor subterranean environment.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been observed or reported for Troglonectes bottazzii. The one dimorphic clue in the original description is the presence of small tubercles on the cheeks of nuptial males, absent in females — a feature typically associated with breeding condition in nemacheilid loaches, though the paper does not describe how or when spawning actually takes place.

Given the total darkness of its cave habitat, courtship in this species, if any exists beyond simple aggregation, would necessarily depend on touch, chemical cues or the lateral line rather than any visual signal — but this is inference from the setting, not an observed behaviour.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Troglonectes bottazzii in the wild or in captivity. Nemacheilid stone loaches generally are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over the substrate with no parental care, and this species is presumed to follow that pattern based on its family, but the presumption has not been confirmed by direct observation.

The species has never been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby, and as a blind cave endemic collected from a single site in China, it has no realistic prospect of entering the trade. Any account of its reproduction beyond the presence of nuptial tubercles in males would be speculation.

In the aquarium

Troglonectes bottazzii is not an aquarium fish and should not become one — it is a blind, depigmented obligate cave dweller known from a single subterranean waterbody, and collecting it for the trade would put real pressure on an extremely restricted population. No hobbyist care information exists, and none should be extrapolated here beyond noting that, like other Troglonectes, it would require constant cool water, complete darkness or very low light (given the pigmentation response reported when specimens were exposed to light), and the gentle water chemistry typical of karst cave systems.

This fish belongs in its cave, not a tank, and its conservation value lies entirely in the intact ecosystem it and T. chenlixini share.

Conservation

Troglonectes bottazzii has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2026 from a single cave site, it has simply not yet been formally assessed. It should be treated as inherently vulnerable rather than assumed safe.

Single-cave endemism is the defining conservation risk here: the entire known population of both T. bottazzii and its cave-mate T. chenlixini occupies one subterranean stream in the karst landscape of Hechi City, Guangxi. Karst cave systems in this region face pressures from groundwater extraction, pollution, and disturbance of cave entrances, though no population trend or threat assessment specific to this species has been published. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this fish.
