Taxonomy & naming
Barbonymus belinka was described by the Dutch colonial physician and ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1860. Over the following century and a half the species was shuffled through several genus combinations that reflect the turbulent taxonomy of Asian cyprinids: it was at various times assigned to Systomus and Puntius (as Puntius belinka) before being placed in Barbodes. Kottelat (1999), working on the nomenclature of Barbodes and related genera, noted that the valid genus for this species is best treated under Barbodes, though subsequent molecular and morphological revisions have suggested that belinka may belong within Barbonymus — a genus erected for a group of large, deep-bodied Sundaland barbs that includes the tinfoil barb.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for valid combinations; users should verify the current accepted placement before citation, as revisions following Kottelat's work have not all been uniformly adopted across databases. FishBase currently lists the species under Barbonymus belinka (Bleeker, 1860), and that is the combination followed here.

Morphology
Barbonymus belinka is a moderately large barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 9.3 in, though most wild individuals are smaller. The body form is the deep, laterally compressed shape characteristic of larger Sundaland barbs, with a relatively high back and a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and plant matter from the water column and substrate.
Detailed published morphological descriptions in the accessible literature are sparse for this species. The genus Barbodes (or Barbonymus, depending on the placement accepted) encompasses deep-bodied species with a generally silvery or brassy ground colour, large scales, and proportions that distinguish them from the slimmer, smaller barbs of genera such as Puntius or Puntigrus. Sexual dimorphism details are not well documented for belinka specifically; gravid females of congeners are typically fuller-bodied than males.
Habitat
Barbonymus belinka occurs in Sumatra and Borneo (including Kalimantan Barat, the Indonesian portion of western Borneo), inhabiting the flowing waters of rivers and streams as well as swampy, vegetated areas typical of Sundaland lowland landscapes. Field data from Danau Sentarum National Park in Kalimantan Barat place the species in habitats with a recorded pH of around 6.4 and water temperatures near 82 °F — conditions consistent with the slightly acidic, warm tropical freshwaters of the region.
Sundaland river systems drain heavily forested catchments and range from clear blackwater to turbid lowland rivers. Barbonymus belinka is a benthopelagic species adapted to warm, tropical, soft-to-moderately hard freshwater environments. Published temperature and pH ranges for the species compiled from aquaculture and ecological literature indicate temperatures of 77–86 °F and a pH of approximately 6.5–7.5.
Feeding
Field observations from Borneo record Barbonymus belinka consuming crustaceans, small fish and insects — a diet placing it among the opportunistic carnivore-omnivores typical of larger barbs in Sundaland rivers. Broader ecological literature on the species group notes omnivorous tendencies including algae, plant matter and small invertebrates alongside animal prey, which is consistent with the feeding ecology of related large Barbodes and Barbonymus species.
In the aquarium, large barbs of this type are generally offered a varied diet of high-quality pellets, live and frozen meaty foods (shrimp, insects, small fish pieces), and vegetable matter. Their size means they are capable predators on small tankmates and should be housed accordingly.
Mating
Like all members of the subfamily Barbinae, Barbonymus belinka is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest construction, no pair bond beyond the act of spawning, and no parental care of eggs or fry. Courtship follows the pattern common to barbs generally: a ripe male pursues a gravid female, driving her through vegetation or over the substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt together in brief, pressing contacts.
Specific published accounts of wild or captive spawning behaviour for belinka are not available in the accessible literature, but the reproductive strategy of egg-scattering with immediate abandonment of the spawn is a conserved trait across the barb lineage to which this species belongs.
Breeding
Barbonymus belinka has not been documented in the aquarium breeding literature to any meaningful degree, and it does not appear to be produced in quantity by the ornamental trade. As a medium to large barb (maximum 9.3 in TL), breeding would require appropriately large facilities. The species, like other large Sundaland barbs, would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs over substrate or vegetation with no subsequent parental care, and adults would eat eggs if not removed.
No published data are available on fecundity, incubation period or larval development for this species specifically. FishBase estimates a minimum population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years, suggesting moderate productivity consistent with a medium-vulnerability species.
In the aquarium
Barbonymus belinka is not a common aquarium subject and is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade. Its maximum size of around 9.3 in TL places it in the category of large barbs requiring substantial aquaria — a minimum of several hundred litres — with robust filtration and companions of comparable size. As an omnivore with a diet that includes small fish in the wild, it is not suitable for community tanks with small species.
For keepers who obtain this species, care would follow the general template for large Sundaland barbs: warm tropical water (77–86 °F), a pH kept in the slightly acidic to neutral range (6.5–7.5), moderate hardness, and ample open swimming space. The species' ecology in swampy and riverine habitats suggests it would benefit from some cover and a varied, protein-rich diet.
Conservation
Barbonymus belinka has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. No published population estimates or structured threat assessments exist for the species in the accessible literature. Its range encompasses Sumatra and Borneo — two of the world's most biodiverse but also most threatened large islands, where extensive deforestation, peatland drainage, agricultural expansion and river modification have driven widespread freshwater habitat loss.
Larger barbs dependent on intact river systems and swampy lowland habitats are among the groups most exposed to these pressures. While belinka is not known to be the target of a significant ornamental or food fishery, the degradation of Sundaland freshwater ecosystems represents a background threat to many species in this region whose status has never been rigorously evaluated.
