Barbonymus sunieri is a medium-sized cyprinid barb endemic to northeastern Borneo, reaching nearly 29 cm in standard length — a size that places it among the larger members of the genus. Originally described by Weber and de Beaufort in 1916 as Puntius sunieri, the species honours Dutch biologist Armand Sunier, who supplied the type material from the colonial natural-history collections at Batavia. It is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of Borneo's rivers and forest streams, known from a restricted range and not yet assessed by the IUCN Red List.

Taxonomy & naming

Barbonymus sunieri was formally described by Max Weber and Lieven Ferdinand de Beaufort in 1916, originally placed in the broad catch-all genus Puntius as Puntius sunieri. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names used throughout this atlas — records the current valid combination as Barbonymus sunieri (Weber & de Beaufort, 1916), with Puntius sunieri treated as a synonym. Some older literature and certain aggregator databases also list the name under Barbonymus, reflecting nomenclatural uncertainty during the period of Puntius revision; the Catalog of Fishes assignment to Barbodes is followed here.

The mass reclassification of Southeast Asian barbs following Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) dissolved the oversized Puntius into numerous genus-level lineages. Barbodes, reinstated for a group of larger Indo-Malayan and Philippine barbs, is the current home for B. sunieri. The species should not be confused with the ornamental Barbonymus (tinfoil barb relatives) despite the occasional mis-citation under that genus.

This fish was long listed as Barbodes sunieri; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Barbonymus, and the current combination Barbonymus sunieri is followed here.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11.3 in for Barbonymus sunieri, making it a substantially built fish for the genus. Detailed morphological descriptions in the primary literature are sparse in openly accessible sources, but it shares the general Barbodes body plan: a laterally compressed, moderately deep body, a terminal to slightly subterminal mouth, and the typical cyprinid fin arrangement with a single dorsal fin and a forked caudal.

As with other large-bodied Bornean barbs, sexual dimorphism is likely present — females probably becoming proportionally deeper-bodied and more rotund when gravid — but specific documented data on colouration, squamation, or meristic counts are not available from cached sources for this species. Coloration details remain undescribed in publicly accessible accounts; data sparse.

Habitat

Barbonymus sunieri is recorded from northeastern Borneo, where it is considered endemic. The rivers and streams of that region encompass a range of habitat types: fast-flowing foothill rivers over sand and gravel, slower lowland reaches with soft substrates, and forest-margin streams influenced by peat and leaf litter. FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic — associated with the lower water column and the bottom — in freshwater environments.

Northeastern Borneo (the Malaysian state of Sabah and parts of Brunei Darussalam) supports both clear-water and moderately tannin-stained river systems. Typical water parameters for the region's forest streams are soft to moderately hard, mildly acidic to neutral (roughly pH 6–7.5), and warm throughout the year, with temperatures broadly in the 73–82 °F range. Specific collection-site data for this species are not reported in cached sources.

Feeding

No targeted dietary study for Barbonymus sunieri appears in accessible literature. By analogy with other large-bodied Barbodes from the Sundaland region, the species is expected to be an opportunistic omnivore: taking aquatic invertebrates, small fish, plant material, algae, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. The benthopelagic habit is consistent with bottom-oriented foraging, picking at substrate-dwelling invertebrates and organic matter.

In the aquarium, similarly sized Barbodes are typically offered high-quality pellets and sticks as a staple, supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates (earthworms, prawns, bloodworm) and some vegetable matter such as blanched greens or spirulina-based foods. Given the species' rarity in the hobby and the lack of husbandry records, any aquarium feeding regime should be adapted from the well-documented care of related large barbs.

Mating

Barbonymus sunieri, as a member of the family Cyprinidae, reproduces by egg-scattering without parental care — the reproductive mode universal across barbs. No courtship or spawning description for this specific species has been published in accessible literature, but the pattern inferred from closely related Barbodes is consistent: sexually ready males pursue gravid females through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief pressing contacts.

There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no territorial defence beyond transient male-to-male competition during active spawning. Eggs are adhesive and settle among plants or onto the substrate, where neither parent attends them. In large river species such as this, seasonal flooding and rising water temperatures likely act as spawning triggers in the wild, as they do for other large Bornean cyprinids.

Breeding

Captive breeding records for Barbonymus sunieri are not documented in available sources, and the species does not appear in the ornamental trade in any significant volume. At 11.3 in standard length it would require a large, well-maintained system to reach reproductive condition. The expected method, extrapolated from comparable large barbs, would involve soft, slightly acidic water with broad, open spawning areas, where a gravid female is driven by one or more males and scatters adhesive eggs over the substrate or among plants.

Eggs would be expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. Adults would need to be removed promptly after spawning, as barbs of all sizes readily consume their own eggs. No fecundity estimates or detailed reproductive data are available for this species in cached sources.

In the aquarium

Barbonymus sunieri is not an established aquarium fish and is essentially absent from the ornamental trade. At close to 11.4 in standard length it would require a very large aquarium — at minimum several hundred litres — to be housed appropriately, and its endemic Bornean distribution means it is rarely if ever exported. No husbandry accounts or keeper reports are known from accessible sources.

For the rare hobbyist who might encounter this species, the care requirements of other large Barbodes and Barbonymus from Borneo serve as a reasonable guide: warm, well-oxygenated water (approximately 75–81 °F), neutral to mildly acidic pH, strong filtration to handle the waste output of a large active fish, and a diet of varied protein-rich foods alongside plant matter. The species' conservation status (not yet evaluated) and endemic range make responsible sourcing an important consideration.

Conservation

Barbonymus sunieri has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its endemic range appears to be confined to northeastern Borneo — a region that has experienced significant deforestation, agricultural conversion, and river modification over recent decades, particularly driven by palm oil expansion and logging in Sabah. Large-bodied endemic river fish in this region are inherently vulnerable to habitat loss and overfishing, but targeted population data for this species are lacking.

The freshwater biodiversity of Borneo is recognised as globally significant and disproportionately threatened; many species in the island's river systems remain poorly known and have received no formal conservation assessment. Given the scale of land-use change in northeastern Borneo and the restricted range inferred for this species, an IUCN evaluation would be a valuable first step in understanding its status.
