Taxonomy & naming
Bleeker described the species in 1860, in the subgenus Crossocheilichthys, from Palembang in southern Sumatra. The authority in the Catalog of Fishes is written with the original subgenus, and the species is valid in Crossocheilus. The genus was revised by Ciccotto and colleagues in 2017, which clarified many of the Sundaland species.
Morphology
Like other Crossocheilus, it is a slender fish with a ventral, fringed mouth for grazing and a dark lateral stripe. FishBase gives a maximum of 5.5 in TL.
Habitat
It lives in the rivers of Sumatra, and FishBase also lists it from Malaysia. It is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical water. Crossocheilus favour clear, flowing water over gravel and rock, but measured parameters for this species have not been published.
Feeding
Crossocheilus graze periphyton, including filamentous and brush algae, plus biofilm and small invertebrates.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been described.
Breeding
Captive breeding has not been documented. Trade Crossocheilus generally come from farms using hormone-induced spawning or from the wild.
In the aquarium
A planted tank with moderate to strong flow, high oxygen and a group of fish suits it. It can be territorial towards its own kind, so a larger group helps. Care notes are based on the genus.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List category is Data Deficient, assessed in 2018. That means there is too little information to judge extinction risk. Threats have not been described.
