Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1934 as Holotylognathus reticulatus, from Thai material, in the same burst of Philadelphia-based work on Siamese fishes that produced the rainbow shark. The nomenclatural trail is knottier than most: Fowler himself described a second 'Crossocheilus reticulatus' in 1935 from the Pasak River — a name both preoccupied by and synonymous with his 1934 species — and a third nominal species, Tylognathus coatesi Fowler 1937 from Bangkok, was later folded in as well. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes settles the matter: Crossocheilus reticulatus (Fowler 1934) is the valid name, with coatesi and the 1935 homonym in its synonymy, the parenthetical authority recording the move out of Holotylognathus.
Within the genus — reviewed most recently by Ciccotto and colleagues in 2017, who recognised eleven valid species — C. reticulatus stands apart from the striped Siamese-algae-eater group on pattern alone: reticulated flanks and a caudal-base blotch rather than a snout-to-tail black stripe. The generic name combines the Greek krossoi (fringe) and cheilos (lip), for the fringed upper lip of the grazing mouth; reticulatus is Latin for 'netted', for the dark scale margins. Family placement is Cyprinidae, subfamily Labeoninae.
Morphology
The silver flying fox is the largest Crossocheilus an aquarist is likely to meet, reaching about 6.5 in standard length. The build is classic for the genus — elongate, low-slung, nearly cylindrical forward and compressed toward the tail, with a flattened ventral profile that seats the fish on the substrate between grazing bouts. The ground colour is bright silver with a faint olive cast dorsally; every flank scale carries a dark posterior margin, and together they draw the fine net-like reticulation of the scientific name. The one emphatic marking is a round to slightly oval jet-black blotch at the caudal-fin base, visible at distance and diagnostic among the region's silvery grazers.
The fins are clear to lightly smoky, without the colour accents of the flying fox (Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus) or the striped pattern shared by the Siamese algae eater complex — confusion between this species and its relatives is far less common simply because it does not wear the stripe. The mouth is inferior with a fringed upper lip and a horny scraping edge, flanked by a pair of small barbels. Sexes are alike in pattern; mature females run fuller-bodied and slightly larger, and conditioned males may show minute tubercles on the snout.
Habitat
Crossocheilus reticulatus is distributed through the Mekong basin — from Yunnan in southern China through Laos, Thailand and Cambodia to Vietnam — and the Chao Phraya basin of central Thailand. It occupies clear, relatively fast water in medium to large rivers, over gravel, boulder and bedrock where light reaches the substrate and sustains the algal and biofilm mat it grazes. FishBase records a temperature envelope of roughly 68–75 °F for the species, cooler than many lowland Southeast Asian fishes, consistent with its preference for flowing, well-oxygenated reaches rather than stagnant floodplain pools.
Like most Mekong cyprinids it moves seasonally with the hydrological pulse, feeding across inundated ground in high water and concentrating in main channels in the dry season — the concentration that makes it accessible to fisheries. It is a benthic, station-holding fish, propping on its pectorals in current and working stone surfaces in short grazing passes. In both rivers it is a common and characteristic member of the grazing guild of clear-water reaches, and its abundance is one of the reasons it registers so prominently in local catches.
Feeding
The diet is aufwuchs: attached filamentous and encrusting algae, diatoms, cyanobacterial film, and the small invertebrates and organic particles bound into the mat, scraped from hard surfaces with the horny lip edge. Gut-content and fisheries literature from the Mekong characterises the species as a periphyton feeder that also takes phytoplankton and detritus in season, an unglamorous but abundant resource base that supports its large populations.
In the aquarium it earns its keep the same way the Siamese algae eater does, and by many accounts more steadily as it matures: it grazes soft filamentous algae, diatom film, and — the trait keepers prize — black brush algae, working leaf surfaces, wood and stone methodically. It accepts all standard foods (sinking wafers and pellets, flake, blanched vegetables, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp), and as with its congener, a generously fed specimen grazes less; keepers who want algae control keep rations modest. It does not, as a rule, damage healthy higher plants, though very fine mosses can be plucked at when the tank runs clean of algae.
Mating
No formal account of courtship or spawning behaviour exists for this species in the accessible scientific literature. Everything about its biology — small non-adhesive eggs in ripe females, seasonal movement with the flood pulse, dense dry-season aggregations — marks it as a typical riverine egg-scatterer: adults spawn in open water or over the substrate at the onset of rising water, shedding gametes with no pairing, nest, or parental involvement, and the eggs and larvae drift and develop in the productive shallows of the flood season.
In captivity the species shows no reproductive territoriality. Social behaviour amounts to loose aggregation with occasional dominance chases among adults, mildest of the trio of 'algae eater sharks' an aquarist might keep (this species, the Siamese algae eater, and the far pushier flying fox). Sexing is practical only in conditioned adults, where females carry visibly deeper, softer bellies; there is no colour dimorphism, and juveniles cannot be sexed externally by any published character.
Breeding
There is no documented home-aquarium spawning of Crossocheilus reticulatus. Aquarium stock is produced commercially in Southeast Asian farms, using the hormone-induced spawning techniques standard for river cyprinids that do not complete their reproductive cycle in ponds: conditioned adults are injected, eggs are collected and incubated separately, and fry are raised on green water, rotifers and Artemia nauplii before growout. Farmed juveniles reach the trade at 1.5–2.5 in, typically alongside shipments of the more famous Siamese algae eater.
In its native rivers the species breeds on the monsoonal schedule inferred for the whole grazing guild — a wet-season spawning migration and larval drift, documented indirectly through the fisheries that intercept the species as it concentrates and moves. For the aquarist, the practical position is the same as for the Siamese algae eater: a fascinating candidate for a first documented spawning, requiring group conditioning, a simulated flood trigger of rising level, flow and temperature shift, and patience — but with no published success to build on, it remains a fish one buys rather than breeds.
In the aquarium
The silver flying fox is an easy fish to keep well and an underrated alternative — or complement — to the Siamese algae eater. It wants what its river reaches offer: space (an adult patrols actively and merits 80 US gal and a metre and a half of length at full size), clean oxygen-rich water with visible flow, a hardscape of rounded stone and wood that grows a little algae, and a tight lid, because like all its relatives it jumps. Temperature is best kept moderate — low-to-mid 20s °C suits it better than the 82 °F of a discus tank — with pH near neutral and hardness unfussy.
Temperamentally it is peaceful and slightly less excitable than the Siamese algae eater; small groups of three to five coexist with only ritual chasing once a pecking order settles, and it ignores unrelated tankmates. It fits well in larger hillstream-flavoured or river-manifold communities with danios, larger rasboras, barbs and loaches. Buyers occasionally confuse juveniles with other silvery grazers, but the caudal blotch plus netted scales are unambiguous. Its main disqualifier is simple scale: a 6 in working fish is wrong for a 100-litre planted cube, and most complaints about the species trace to exactly that mismatch.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Crossocheilus reticulatus as Least Concern (Baird, 2012; assessed 25 February 2011). The species is widespread and abundant across the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems, and it is a genuinely important fisheries species — taken in quantity in subsistence and commercial fisheries of the Mekong basin, particularly as fish concentrate and migrate with falling and rising water. That harvest, substantial as it is, has not produced evidence of range-wide decline in an abundant, fast-turnover grazer.
The longer-term pressures are structural rather than extractive: mainstem and tributary dams on the Mekong alter the flood pulse that times the species' movements and reproduction, block migration routes, and — by trapping sediment — change the very substrates the grazing guild depends on. Catchment deforestation and sand mining act in the same direction. None of this is specific to C. reticulatus, but a fisheries staple woven into the river's seasonal rhythm is a good sentinel for it. The species has no CITES listing and is not a CARES priority; aquarium demand is met by farm production and plays no measurable role in wild population trends.
