Taxonomy & naming
Labeo kaage was described in 2026 by R. G. Kumar, C. Ravi, N. P. Krishnaprasoon and V. S. Basheer of the ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Kochi, published in the Journal of Fish Biology. It belongs to the genus Labeo, part of the subfamily Labeoninae within the family Cyprinidae. The formal citation for the paper notes that it was "first published online without Zoobank Registration, ICZN unavailable," with Zoobank registration and the final volume, issue and page numbers added on 9 July 2026 — meaning the name only became formally available under the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature once that registration was completed, a procedural detail the Catalog of Fishes records alongside the description.
The describing authors compare L. kaage most closely with three other dark-coloured Labeo endemic to peninsular India — L. nigrescens, L. filiferus and L. chekida — and with the more widespread L. calbasu. It differs from L. nigrescens in the pectoral fin not reaching the pelvic fin, in transverse scale-row counts of 1/2 8 to 1/2 9 + 1 + 6, in 16.5 branched dorsal-fin rays, in 37-38 vertebrae, and in lacking a kink in the lateral line near the 17th pored scale. It differs from L. filiferus in not having filamentous anterior dorsal-fin rays, and in carrying prominent acanthoid (spine-bearing) tubercles in the preorbital field. Compared with L. calbasu, it has a shallower body (27.4-31.8% of standard length), a dorsal-fin base longer than the fin is tall, and an adpressed pelvic fin that reaches the anal-fin origin. COI barcoding corroborates the morphological diagnosis, placing L. kaage 5.4-6.2% genetically distant from L. calbasu and 5.2-5.4% from L. nigrescens. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Labeo kaage Kumar, Ravi, Krishnaprasoon & Basheer, 2026, with no parentheses around the authority.
Morphology
No absolute length measurement for Labeo kaage was accessible for this article, but its body proportions are documented in detail. Body depth runs 27.4-31.8% of standard length — shallower than in L. calbasu — with the greatest body depth in the species overall not exceeding one-third of standard length. The dorsal fin has a base longer than its height, and its anterior rays are not extended into filaments (unlike L. filiferus). The pectoral fins, when laid back against the body, do not reach the pelvic fins, and the adpressed pelvic fin reaches the anal-fin origin.
Two pairs of barbels are present, each longer than the diameter of the eye. Acanthoid tubercles — small, spine-bearing projections — with three to five spines each are scattered across the preorbital, ethmoid, rhinal and rostral fields of the head, a pattern of ornamentation used in the species diagnosis. Meristic counts include a lateral line of 38 plus 2-3 scales, transverse scale rows of 1/2 8 to 1/2 9 + 1 + 6, 16.5 branched dorsal-fin rays, and 37-38 vertebrae; unlike L. nigrescens, the lateral line does not show a kink near the 17th pored scale. Body and fin colouration is described as uniformly dark green to black, the character giving the species its most immediately obvious field mark among Cauvery-basin Labeo.
Habitat
Labeo kaage is known from the Cauvery River upstream of Shivanasamudra Falls, Karnataka, India, at approximately 12.26°N, 77.17°E — within the upper reaches of the Cauvery basin, one of the major rivers of peninsular India draining the Deccan Plateau eastward from the Western Ghats. Specific water chemistry, current speed and substrate at the type locality were not accessible for this article, though the presence of a well-developed pelvic fin and stout body proportions is broadly consistent with a river-channel, rather than a still-water, habitat — a general inference, not a documented habitat description for this species specifically.
Feeding
No dietary study specific to Labeo kaage has been published. The genus Labeo as a whole is characterized by thick, fleshy lips adapted for scraping algae, biofilm and detritus from submerged rock and substrate, an omnivorous bottom-feeding strategy shared by well-studied congeners such as the widely cultured L. rohita and the black-coloured L. calbasu to which L. kaage is compared in its description — a genus-level inference, not a finding reported for L. kaage specifically.
Mating
No courtship behaviour has been documented for Labeo kaage. The acanthoid tubercles present across the snout in the type series are part of the species' standing diagnostic morphology rather than described as a seasonal breeding character, and whether tubercle development varies with the reproductive cycle, as it does in many cyprinids, has not been documented for this species.
Breeding
Labeo kaage has not been spawned or observed breeding in the wild, as far as published sources show. Many Labeo species, including large-river congeners cultured for food, are known to migrate upstream to spawn over gravel or in flood-associated shallows, releasing eggs and milt in open water with no parental care — a genus-level pattern, not a confirmed account of L. kaage's own reproductive biology.
In the aquarium
Labeo kaage is not established in the aquarium hobby and has no husbandry record; it was described only in 2026 from a single stretch of the Cauvery River. The genus Labeo more broadly does include species kept in the aquarium trade — the black-coloured Labeo chrysophekadion ("black shark") is among the better-known examples, and its size and dark colouration make it a loose parallel to L. kaage's own uniformly dark green to black appearance — but this is a genus-level observation, not evidence that L. kaage itself is collected or traded.
Conservation
Labeo kaage has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, having been described only in 2026. Its known distribution is limited to the Cauvery River upstream of Shivanasamudra Falls in Karnataka, India, and no population, trend or threat data specific to the species were accessible for this article.
