Taxonomy & naming
Gnathonemus barbatus was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967 and is recorded in older literature under the synonym Mormyrus barbatus. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the African weakly electric fishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, an ancient teleost lineage whose living members are scattered across Africa, South America, Asia and Australasia and that trace back deep into fish evolutionary history. The type locality is Caluango, on the Camaloa River, a tributary of the Luangue River in the Kasai River drainage of the middle Congo basin, Angola.
The genus name Gnathonemus derives from the Greek gnathos, "jaw", and nema, "thread", alluding to the slender, elongate lower jaw shared by many species in the genus. The species epithet barbatus is Latin for "bearded", a direct reference to the long, fleshy chin extension — the same kind of sensory appendage, often called a schnauzenorgan in the more famous Gnathonemus petersii, that gives elephantnoses their common name. FishBase separates G. barbatus from G. petersii on hard counts rather than looks alone: it carries 45–47 scales along the lateral line and has a noticeably deeper body, with a length-to-body-depth ratio of roughly 1.9. As with many mormyrids, confident field identification of look-alike species is difficult, and some authors lean on the fish's individual electric-organ discharge as the more reliable marker.
Morphology
Gnathonemus barbatus has the general elephantnose build: a laterally compressed, deep-bodied trunk, a small terminal mouth, and a slender caudal peduncle leading to a forked tail. That narrow tail stalk houses the electric organ, a stack of modified muscle cells (electrocytes) that fires a brief, species-specific pulse used for electrolocation and communication — a trait Gnathonemus shares with the rest of the Mormyridae but which arose entirely independently of the unrelated electric knifefishes of South America. FishBase gives a maximum size of 6.2 in standard length, making this a modest, unassuming mormyrid rather than one of the outsized bonytongues that trap unprepared keepers.
The "beard" that gives the species its name is the elongated fleshy tip of the lower jaw, densely packed with electroreceptors and used to probe soft substrate for buried food. Mormyrids as a group are also known for having one of the largest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrical information from the skin's electroreceptors — a genuine "thinking fish" built around a sense humans don't have. Detailed accounts of live coloration in G. barbatus are sparse; like most mormyrids it is presumed to show the typical dark grey-brown to blackish body common across the genus, but this has not been documented in the sources available for this species.
Habitat
Gnathonemus barbatus is known from the Luangue River, part of the Kasai River drainage in the middle Congo basin, in Angola — a tropical, demersal freshwater species that lives on or near the riverbed rather than in open water. The type locality, the Camaloa River near Caluango, sits within this same Kasai/Luangue system, and the species' documented range appears to be narrow, consistent with many Congo-basin mormyrids that are effectively single-drainage endemics.
Congo basin tributaries like the Luangue are typically slow-flowing, structurally complex rivers with submerged wood, leaf litter and fine sediment, often running dark and low-visibility from dissolved tannins and suspended solids. That dim, turbid environment is exactly the setting in which the mormyrid electric sense is thought to have evolved: where eyesight is of limited use for navigating snags and finding food after dark, a self-generated electric field lets the fish build a moving picture of its surroundings independent of light.
Feeding
As a demersal forager, Gnathonemus barbatus is presumed — consistent with its genus and family — to hunt over sand and soft sediment for small invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms and other benthic prey, using its beard-like chin extension to probe crevices and buried material. The dense electroreceptor field on that appendage, combined with the fish's electric-organ discharge, lets it detect prey items it cannot see, particularly at night or in turbid water.
In the aquarium, mormyrids in general are fed live or frozen bloodworm, mosquito larvae, whiteworm, Daphnia and tubifex rather than dry food, which they are often reluctant to take. Feeding tends to happen mostly after dark, so a nocturnal elephantnose can be outcompeted by more active daytime tankmates unless food is also offered once the lights are off.
Mating
Courtship in mormyrids generally is understood to run through the same channel as everything else in their lives: the electric-organ discharge. In well-studied relatives, the pulse waveform and its timing carry information about species and individual identity and are used in dominance and courtship interactions between fish that may barely be able to see one another. Whether Gnathonemus barbatus follows this pattern has not been documented — no field or captive account of its courtship behaviour appears in the available literature.
Wild mormyrids as a group are believed to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, timing reproduction to the rains and the resulting rise in water level and food availability across floodplain habitat. There is no specific published record of this timing, or of any courtship display, for G. barbatus itself; the honest state of knowledge is that its mating behaviour is essentially unstudied.
Breeding
Breeding in Gnathonemus barbatus is poorly known and has essentially not been achieved in captivity. This is typical of the elephantnoses and mormyrids as a whole — a group with almost no aquarium breeding track record, in sharp contrast to the well-documented captive spawning of many other African and South American aquarium fish.
What little is understood about mormyrid reproduction comes from a mix of field observation and inference: seasonal, flood-associated spawning is presumed, and some species in the family are thought to guard eggs laid among submerged vegetation or root tangles, though the details vary by species and are rarely confirmed. No such account exists specifically for G. barbatus. A prospective keeper should treat this as a fish kept for its natural history and electric sense rather than one with any realistic prospect of a home-aquarium spawn.
In the aquarium
Gnathonemus barbatus is rarely seen in the trade — far less commonly imported than its better-known cousin Gnathonemus petersii — and should be approached as a specialist fish rather than a casual community addition. It wants soft substrate it can probe with its chin, dim lighting rather than a bright tank, and plenty of cover from roots, driftwood or dense planting to retreat into during the day, since like most mormyrids it is most active after dark. General guidance for the genus favours soft, tannin-tinted water at a warm 75–82 °F, mirroring the slow, sediment-rich Congo basin rivers it comes from, though species-specific water-chemistry data for G. barbatus has not been published.
Mormyrids are frequently reported as sensitive to salt and to many medications, so any chemical treatment should be dosed conservatively and only when necessary. They are also typically intolerant of their own kind — hobby accounts describe elephantnoses as solitary and prone to aggression toward other mormyrids sharing a tank — so a single specimen, rather than a group, is the usual recommendation, kept alongside calm tankmates that won't out-compete it for food after lights-out. At a modest maximum of around 6.2 in, G. barbatus poses none of the size-trap problems of the larger bonytongues, but its specialised sensory biology and its intolerance of poor water quality still make it a fish for an experienced keeper.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List category for Gnathonemus barbatus is Data Deficient, an assessment last carried out in February 2009. FishBase notes the species is regarded as having high inherent population resilience and low vulnerability to fishing pressure, but a Data Deficient rating means there simply isn't enough distribution, abundance or trend information to assign a threat category with confidence.
With its known range effectively limited to the Luangue River system in the Kasai River drainage of Angola's middle Congo basin, G. barbatus is a narrow-range, little-studied fish rather than a widely distributed or heavily traded one. No specific threats have been documented for it, and in the absence of dedicated survey work its conservation status is best summarised honestly as unknown rather than assumed safe.
