The Kasai is the Congo's great southern arm — a 900,0 mi² catchment that gathers rain off the Lunda Plateau of Angola and carries it north into the rainforest heart of the DRC. It rises high on the savanna, breaks over scarp after scarp in falls and rapids, then slows and braids into a 4-km-wide channel studded with islands before delivering an average of about 1,656 ft³ per second to the Congo above Kinshasa. Those rapids did two things at once: they kept the fishes of one drainage from spilling into the next, and they left the Kasai among the least-explored river systems in central Africa. The cichlids born of that isolation — a tiny endemic flock in one karst spring, rapids specialists known from a handful of museum jars — now face a river being poisoned from upstream.

Geography & hydrology

The Kasai drains roughly 900,0 mi² across southwestern DRC and the northeast corner of Angola, which makes it one of the largest sub-basins of the entire Congo system. Its headwaters rise in a series of highland massifs along the northern rim of the Lunda Plateau, with sources between about 1,000 and 1,1640 ft above sea level. From there the land slopes gently toward the central Congo basin, but the plateau is cut by numerous scarps, so most of the rivers drop through falls and rapids before they reach the low-lying Cuvette Centrale — the basin floor that was part of an ancient inland lake in the Pliocene. The bulk of the Kasai's own rapids sit upstream of the city of Tshikapa, at around 1640 ft elevation; below that the mainstem settles toward 984 ft before it threads the swamp forests of the central basin and joins the Congo (FEOW Ecoregion 546).

Downstream the river changes character completely. The mainstem Kasai reaches mean widths of about 2 mi for stretches up to 435 mi long, and in its lower reaches it is crowded with islands that flood over in high water. The flooding regime is unimodal in the upper river and shifts to bimodal as it nears the Congo confluence, with an annual amplitude of roughly 10 ft in the lower reaches. Seasonally and permanently inundated swamp forests line the bottom of every river valley in the ecoregion, in strips 328 ft to 6 mi wide — along the Kwilu and its feeders alone there are eleven major swamps totaling about 1,342 mi², and a single wetland near Sandoa, on the Lulua, covers some 4,311 mi² (Hughes & Hughes 1992; Marlier 1973).

The tributary network is what gives the basin its reach. Running east to west, the major feeders are the Kwango (Cuango), Wamba, Kwilu (Cuilo), Loange, Lulua, and Sankuru. Several of them are big rivers in their own right, draining their own plateaus and arriving with their own water chemistry and their own fishes; the Sankuru and Lukenie reach far to the east, the Kwango and Kwilu drain the Angolan border country to the southwest. A few of the uppermost Kasai tributaries are placed instead in the Zambezian Headwaters ecoregion, a nod to an old connection with the upper Zambezi and the southern-African flavor of their fauna (Poll 1967). The whole system carries pale, sandy sediment shed off the Kalahari-sand mantle of the plateau, which is part of why the clearer Kasai tributaries run so transparent between flood pulses.

Water & habitat

Most of the Kasai's tributaries are soft, weakly mineralized, sandy-bottomed rivers — the signature of a basin floored by deeply weathered Kalahari sands and old plateau rock that gives up little dissolved load. The headwater and middle reaches are broken by falls and rapids wherever the rivers cross the scarps of the Lunda Plateau, and it is in those fast, rocky stretches that the basin's most specialized fishes live. Lower down, where the gradient slackens, the rivers spread into island-braided channels and skirt vast swamp forests, and the water slows, warms, and loses oxygen in the backwaters and floodplain lagoons (Marlier 1973; FEOW 546).

The clearest illustration of the basin's habitat range is the Fwa, a short tributary of the Lubi in the middle of the ecoregion. The Fwa is a karst system: its water surfaces from underground limestone galleries already filtered, so it runs almost glass-clear over a sandy bed, the channel carpeted in aquatic plants across more than two-thirds of its width and shaded by a tall gallery forest. Only about 9–12 mi long, it holds a tight set of endemic cichlids that field workers attribute to exactly this stability — a constant, transparent, vegetated spring-fed stream that has held its conditions long enough for fishes to diverge in place (Roberts & Kullander 1994; Key Biodiversity Areas, River Fwa).

That stability is the exception. Across the rest of the basin the organizing force is the flood pulse: rivers rise and fall by around 10 ft a year, connecting and then cutting off the swamps, side channels, and floodplain lakes that fringe the mainstems. The rapids themselves — shallow, oxygen-rich water over broken rock — work as barriers as much as habitats, and the contrast between a clear, plant-filled karst creek like the Fwa, a tea-dark swamp-forest channel near the Congo confluence, and a sand-and-rapid reach below the plateau is the reason the Kasai packs so many different fish communities into one catchment. The hard, taxonomic truth about the basin's water and habitats, though, is that they remain barely measured: FEOW rates the ecoregion's level of taxonomic exploration as poor, and most published water chemistry for the Kasai is incidental to fish collecting rather than the product of any sustained limnological survey (FEOW 546).

The cichlid fauna

The Kasai's cichlids fall into a few clear groups, and the roster here covers all of them. The headline is the Fwa River flock — five cichlids found nowhere else on Earth, packed into that one short karst stream. Two of them, Cyclopharynx fwae and Cyclopharynx schwetzi, belong to a genus known only from the Fwa; alongside them live Schwetzochromis neodon and the haplochromine-type mouthbrooders Thoracochromis brauschi and Thoracochromis callichromus. Roberts and Kullander revised this assemblage in 1994 in the work that still defines it, and the Fwa is now recognized as a Key Biodiversity Area triggered in part by these fishes; the river's unusual constancy is the standard explanation for how so much speciation happened in so small a space (Roberts & Kullander 1994; FEOW 546; KBA River Fwa).

A second group are the rapids specialists of the lower Kasai, and they tell a stranger biogeographic story. Steatocranus rouxi — one of the lumpy-headed, reduced-swim-bladder "buffalohead" cichlids built for living wedged among rocks in fast water — and Teleogramma monogramma, a slender, elongate rheophile, are both known from only a few historical specimens taken in the rapids near the river's mouth. The odd part is their kinship: their closest relatives sit not elsewhere in the Kasai but downstream in Pool Malebo and the rapids of the Lower Congo, where Steatocranus and Teleogramma have radiated famously. The Kasai's rapids cichlids appear to be outliers of that Lower Congo rheophile fauna rather than products of the Kasai itself (FEOW 546).

The rest of the roster fills in the basin's wider Congolese and southern-African character. Thoracochromis stigmatogenys and Thoracochromis callichromus represent the small generalist haplochromines of the quieter waters. Tylochromis lateralis, a deep-bodied sand-sifter, ranges through the middle Congo and well up into the Kasai, Sankuru, and Lukenie. Lamprologus congoensis is the Congo-basin riverine member of a genus better known from Lake Tanganyika. Pelmatochromis nigrofasciatus and Paratilapia toddi round out the substrate-oriented dwarf and medium cichlids, while Tilapia sparrmanii and the predatory Serranochromis jallae — the nembwe — are Zambezian elements that reach the Kasai through those upper tributaries with their old southern connections. The fauna is real, but it is also thinly known: the Kwilu around Kikwit yielded 113 species with 29 new regional records in a single 2011 survey, and the lower Lulua went from a historical 79 species to 208, with 129 first records, once it was properly sampled between 2007 and 2014 (Munene & Stiassny 2011; Katemo Manda et al. 2021). Almost every collecting trip into the Kasai still turns up range extensions and undescribed fishes, so the cichlid list is best read as provisional.

Conservation

The Kasai's remoteness protected it for a long time, and then stopped protecting it. On 24 July 2021 a tailings pipe ruptured at the Catoca diamond mine in Angola's Lunda Sul province — the fourth-largest diamond mine in the world — and sent a slug of mine waste down the Tshikapa River and into the Kasai. Within weeks hundreds of kilometers of river had turned brownish-red; satellite imagery traced the plume back across the border to Catoca, and witnesses described dead fish and hippo carcasses floating downstream. The Congolese government reported twelve people dead and thousands sickened, and put 13 of Kasaï province's 18 health zones — more than 200 villages and close to a million people — inside the affected area. Most of those people drink straight from the river (Mongabay 2021; IPIS 2022; Reuters 2021).

What followed was less an investigation than a silence. Preliminary Congolese tests reported heavy metals including iron and nickel; independent sampling later organized through universities in Lubumbashi and Leuven found nickel, uranium, and other metals in the water, though no analysis ever pinned the fish kill and human deaths to a single proven cause. The mine operator announced expeditions meant to confirm that no heavy metals had escaped, and never published the results; promised intergovernmental commissions and the Congolese "polluter pays" demands faded; a class action filed on behalf of nearly 8,000 residents in the Tshikapa district court ran into the difficulty of enforcing anything against an Angolan company part-owned by the Angolan state. The government ban on consuming Kasai and Tshikapa water and fish, imposed in August 2021, was still in place a year later, and the wells promised to replace that water were never dug (IPIS 2022).

The spill was the dramatic event; the slow threats are arguably worse for the fishes. Diamond extraction along the Angolan headwaters and the DRC's diamond districts around Tshikapa and Mbuji-Mayi puts sediment and metals into the rivers as a matter of routine. Across the basin the documented pressures are deforestation for shifting agriculture and charcoal, clearing of the gallery and swamp forests, and destructive fishing — including fine mosquito-net seines that strip out juveniles — all of them rising. On the Fwa, the very constancy that produced the endemic flock is fragile: surveyors there flag rapid forest clearance, erosion off the cleared valley slopes, and acidic effluent and palm-nut waste from artisanal palm-oil pressing that smothers the shoreline plants where juvenile cichlids shelter (KBA River Fwa; Katemo Manda et al. 2021). The deeper problem sits underneath all of it: a river system this poorly surveyed cannot easily prove what it is losing. Fishes known from five specimens in one stream, or from a handful of century-old jars from the lower rapids, can disappear before anyone documents that they were ever in trouble.
