Hippopotamyrus longilateralis is a little-known member of the mormyrids, or elephantnoses — the weakly electric freshwater fishes of Africa's Mormyridae, and part of Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost fish. Described only in 2010 by Bernd Kramer and Frank Swartz, it was carved out of the Hippopotamyrus ansorgii species complex on the strength of both scale counts and a distinct pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD) — the same weak electric signal these fish use to read the dark, structure-choked water of their home river and, it seems, to tell their own kind apart. It is known only from a short stretch of the Cunene (Kunene) River on the Angola–Namibia border, has never been formally assessed for conservation status, and is essentially unrecorded in the aquarium hobby; what little is known about it comes from the taxonomic literature and from the broader biology of its mormyrid relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Hippopotamyrus longilateralis was described in 2010 by Bernd Kramer and Frank Swartz in the Journal of Natural History, as part of a revision that split the wide-ranging Hippopotamyrus ansorgii species complex — informally known among mormyrid researchers as the "slender stonebashers" — into several distinct species along the Cunene River system of southern Africa. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes: an ancient teleost lineage named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching patch on the roof, and one that also gave rise to South America's arowanas, Asia's arapaima-like giants, and the Old World's featherback knifefishes on a separate continent again. FishBase currently lists the species under an alternative genus, Heteromormyrus, reflecting ongoing revision of mormyrid generic limits; this account follows the original Hippopotamyrus combination used in the description.

The epithet longilateralis is Latin for "long-sided" (longus, long + lateralis, of the side), referring to the fish's comparatively long lateral-line scale row, one of the characters Kramer and Swartz used to separate it from related morphs in the ansorgii complex. The holotype came from what the authors called the Lower Cunene morph. As in most mormyrids, appearance alone is a poor guide to identity — many species in this genus look almost identical, and the authors leaned as heavily on the fish's species-specific electric organ discharge waveform, genetically distinct from its neighbours, as on anatomy to justify a new species. That reliance on an invisible signal to draw a species boundary is a useful reminder of how differently these fish experience their own world.

Morphology

Hippopotamyrus longilateralis has the generalised mormyrid body plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed trunk, a small, low-set, near-terminal mouth, and — unlike the trunk-nosed elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii — no elongated, electroreceptor-packed chin appendage (a "schnauzenorgan"); its snout is comparatively unremarkable, closer to the blunt-to-pointed head shape typical of Hippopotamyrus as a genus. A weakly electric organ sits in the slender caudal peduncle just ahead of the tail, and it is this organ's discharge — not colour or shape — that field workers and taxonomists alike use to tell this species apart from its closest relatives with any confidence.

Reported maximum size is modest for a mormyrid, around 6.8 in total length (FishBase) — nowhere near the size traps seen elsewhere in this order among the true arowanas or the arapaima. As in other mormyrids, the brain is unusually large relative to body size, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted to processing the constant stream of electrosensory information the fish gathers as it swims; mormyrids as a group are frequently cited as having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, rivalling some birds and mammals on that measure alone.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Cunene (Kunene) River system, the river that forms much of the border between Angola and Namibia, from below Ruacana Falls downstream to above Epupa Falls — a specific reach rather than the whole river. Within that stretch it favours well-vegetated banks with steep, undercut margins, sheltering among exposed roots and other submerged structure rather than in open water; it is described as benthopelagic, living and foraging near the bottom of the water column.

Like most of its family it is a fish of dim, structurally complex, tropical African fresh water rather than open, brightly lit habitat — the kind of setting mormyrids' electric sense evolved to read when vision is of limited use. Beyond that specific Cunene reach, detailed habitat data for this narrow-range species are sparse; it has not been reported from other river systems.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Hippopotamyrus longilateralis appears in the literature, so what follows is inferred from the genus and family rather than from direct observation of this species. Mormyrids are nocturnal, bottom-oriented foragers that hunt largely by electrolocation rather than sight, using their weak electric field to detect the disturbance small invertebrates create in it; the diet is generally aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms picked from sediment, root tangles and other structure after dark.

Where any Hippopotamyrus or related stonebasher has been kept, aquarists report an eagerness for live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, blackworm — best offered after the lights go out, matching the fish's natural rhythm; there is no reason to expect this species to differ.

Mating

Mating in mormyrids generally follows the seasonal rains: rising water and the conductivity shifts that come with it are thought to trigger gonadal maturation in many species, tying reproduction to the same flood pulses that reshape river channels like the Cunene. The precise cues and timing for Hippopotamyrus longilateralis itself have not been documented.

What is documented — and what motivated this species' description in the first place — is that its electric organ discharge waveform is measurably and genetically distinct from that of its closest relatives in the ansorgii complex. In mormyrids the EOD is known to carry a courtship and species-recognition role in addition to electrolocation, so a fish's own "song" likely helps it find a mate of the right species in water too dark, and often too crowded with look-alike relatives, for eyesight to do the job.

Breeding

Breeding in this species is essentially unrecorded. Across Mormyridae as a whole, captive spawning is rarely achieved and wild breeding behaviour is poorly characterised even for well-studied species; spawning strategy varies by species, with some pairing off and others requiring a group, plant cover or a gravel substrate to trigger spawning, and parental care is documented in only a handful of species (notably male mouth- or nest-guarding in Pollimyrus isidori).

For Hippopotamyrus longilateralis specifically there is no published account of eggs, fry or parental behaviour, in the wild or in an aquarium. Given how narrow its known range is and how recently it was even recognised as distinct, this remains one of the many mormyrid species whose reproduction is simply unknown.

In the aquarium

Hippopotamyrus longilateralis is not an established aquarium fish — it is a narrow-range Cunene River endemic described from scientific collections rather than from the trade, and there is no body of hobbyist experience to draw on. Anyone who does encounter it, most likely as an occasional wild-caught mixed-species import labelled simply "stonebasher" or "mormyrid," should apply the general, hard-won care rules for the family rather than anything species-specific.

Those rules are consistent across Mormyridae: dim lighting, a soft substrate, and generous cover — driftwood, roots and plants that echo the undercut, root-choked banks this species is reported from in the wild — matter more than tank decoration for its own sake, since these are shy, largely nocturnal fish. Water quality must be stable and clean; mormyrids as a group are notably intolerant of poor conditions and of many common medications, so problems are best prevented rather than treated. Feed meaty frozen or live invertebrate foods after the lights go down, and expect this species, like many of its relatives, to be territorial toward its own kind in a small tank even though it is not typically aggressive toward other fish.

Conservation

Hippopotamyrus longilateralis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and its status is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Described only in 2010, it may simply not yet have come up for review; FishBase likewise lists no conservation category beyond Not Evaluated.

The species is known from a single, specific reach of one border river, between Ruacana Falls and Epupa Falls on the Cunene — a range narrow enough that any localised change, whether from the existing Ruacana hydropower scheme or from further water development on the river, would be worth watching, though no formal threat assessment exists to confirm or rule out a concern. In the absence of a Red List review, that narrow known distribution is the most concrete conservation-relevant fact available.
