Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius angolensis is a member of the Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the most ancient surviving lineages of bony fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against a toothed plate on the roof of the mouth. The order is a scattered, deep-time radiation found across four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia), and the Mormyridae are its exclusively African branch: every member is weakly electric, a sense that evolved entirely independently of, and is unrelated to, the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes). The species was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1905; the parenthetical authorship reflects a later move into the genus Marcusenius, one of the largest mormyrid genera, distributed across river systems from West Africa to the Zambezi.
Its taxonomic history has not been static since. Research into geographic variation across the widespread Marcusenius macrolepidotus species complex in southern and eastern Africa found that populations long lumped under that one name were not a single species, and Marcusenius angolensis — Boulenger's original 1905 name — was resurrected as a valid, geographically distinct species rather than treated as a synonym. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority on valid fish names, currently recognises it as such. The epithet angolensis is straightforward Latin for 'of Angola,' after the country at the centre of its range; the genus name Marcusenius is thought to honour the naturalist J. Marcusen, whose mid-19th-century study of mormyrid anatomy helped lay the groundwork for understanding the family's electric organ.
Morphology
Marcusenius angolensis shows the standard mormyrid build: a laterally compressed body, a small, forward-set mouth without the elongated chin appendage ('schnauzenorgan') that some relatives such as Gnathonemus carry, and a caudal peduncle housing the tail-mounted electric organ that defines the family. FishBase records the species' fin formula as long-based for the genus — around 26 dorsal-fin rays and 33 anal-fin rays, with the anal fin spanning roughly a quarter (25.7%) of standard length and the dorsal fin close to a fifth (19.6%) — giving the fish a proportionally long-finned silhouette rather than the short, high fins seen in some other Marcusenius.
Maximum recorded size is a modest 5.3 in total length (FishBase), smaller than some of the genus's larger river species and well short of anything resembling a size trap for a dedicated tank. As in other mormyrids, the electric organ is paired with an outsized cerebellum, giving the family one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios recorded in any vertebrate — the physiological overhead of running a sensitive electrolocation and communication system. Because M. angolensis was only recently split back out from the wider M. macrolepidotus complex, and because many mormyrids are difficult to separate on external anatomy alone, confident identification in the field and the trade leans heavily on locality data and, ultimately, the fish's species-specific electric organ discharge (EOD) rather than colour or fin shape.
Habitat
Marcusenius angolensis has an unusually broad range for a mormyrid, spanning multiple African river systems centred on Angola: FishBase lists the Cuanza, Kunene, upper Zambezi and Okavango drainages and the southern Congo basin within Angola, extending north into the Democratic Republic of the Congo via the Kasai and middle Congo rivers and the Aruwimi, with a possible occurrence at Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool) on the main Congo channel. It is recorded as a freshwater, demersal (bottom-associated), potamodromous species — one that migrates within fresh water, typically timed to seasonal flooding, rather than to and from the sea.
Material used to help resolve the species' identity within the wider Marcusenius macrolepidotus complex was collected from forested blackwater streams in the western Congo basin near Ngenza Village in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — shaded, tannin-stained, slow-flowing water with poor visibility, the classic setting in which a weak electric sense outperforms eyesight. Across its Angolan and Congo-basin range the species likely tracks similar soft, forest-influenced river and floodplain habitat, though detailed habitat data for the full range is sparse.
Feeding
No feeding study specific to Marcusenius angolensis was located; its biology is presumed to follow the general mormyrid pattern of a nocturnal, electrolocation-guided forager, sweeping soft substrate and leaf litter for small aquatic invertebrates that are effectively invisible in the dim, tannin-stained water it inhabits. The weak electric organ discharge that mormyrids use to navigate doubles as a prey-detection sense, letting the fish locate buried or hidden animals without relying on sight.
In the aquarium, elephantnoses and mormyrids as a group take live and frozen mosquito larvae, bloodworm, white and black worms, Daphnia, Tubifex and Cyclops readily, and this species can be expected to do the same. Feeding after the lights go out, when the fish is naturally most active, generally gets the best results, and a soft sand or fine gravel substrate lets it forage and probe without abrading its sensitive skin.
Mating
FishBase records the breeding biology of Marcusenius angolensis as unknown, and that gap is typical of the genus. Across mormyrids generally, courtship and species/sex recognition are believed to run substantially through the electric organ discharge rather than visual display — the pulse pattern itself may signal identity and readiness to spawn — with wild spawning thought to be seasonal and cued to the rains and rising water of the African wet season. None of this has been specifically confirmed for M. angolensis.
A home aquarium is a poor place to observe or induce this behaviour even if it were better understood: filters, heaters, pumps and reflective glass all add electrical and acoustic noise that can interfere with the weak EOD signals mormyrids depend on for courtship, which is one reason natural spawning essentially never plays out in captivity for fish in this family.
Breeding
There is no record of Marcusenius angolensis being bred in the aquarium hobby, and, as with most mormyrids, little is known even about its reproduction in the wild. The pattern across the family is a seasonal, flood-triggered spawn, and some mormyrids are thought to scatter or loosely guard eggs among vegetation, but no such detail has been confirmed for this species — FishBase lists its breeding simply as unknown.
Aquarists should not expect to breed this fish. Virtually every mormyrid in the trade, this species included, is wild-caught, and any reported captive spawning within this family should be treated with real scepticism absent solid documentation.
In the aquarium
Hobby guidance for mormyrids and elephantnoses generally calls for a tank of at least 39.4 in, with fine sand or smooth gravel substrate to protect the fish's sensitive head and skin as it forages. These are group fish by nature and do best kept in numbers rather than alone or in pairs — a lone or poorly grouped mormyrid can become the target of, or the source of, conspecific aggression that a larger group tends to diffuse.
Water guidance for the family sits around pH 6–8 (optimum near 7.5), 4–18 °dH (optimum near 10), at 77–84 °F — a warm, moderately soft-to-hard range — but mormyrids are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to turbidity, and stable, clean conditions matter to them more than to many aquarium staples. They are also sensitive to a number of aquarium medications, so any dosing in a mormyrid tank should be approached cautiously and conservatively. At a modest 5.3 in, M. angolensis is not a size-trap fish, but it is a specialist one: dim lighting, calm tankmates and minimal electrical or acoustic clutter suit it far better than a bright, busy community tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius angolensis as Least Concern, an assessment dated to 2010 per FishBase's citation. That status is consistent with a species recorded across a genuinely broad footprint of Angolan and Congo-basin drainages — the Cuanza, Kunene, upper Zambezi, Okavango and southern Congo basin in Angola, plus the Kasai, middle Congo and Aruwimi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo — rather than a narrow single-river endemic.
Angola's freshwater fish fauna was left comparatively under-surveyed by decades of civil conflict, so range and population data for many of its river fish, this species included, remain thinner than for better-studied African systems. No specific threat has been documented for M. angolensis, but the general long-term pressures on Congo-basin and Zambezi-Okavango river systems — sedimentation, damming and hydrological change, and habitat degradation — are the relevant backdrop for a species that depends on clean, soft, tannin-stained water to run its electric sense effectively.
