Hippopotamyrus pictus is a large-bodied, weakly electric mormyrid of West Africa's Sahelo-Sudanian rivers — a member of the elephantnose family Mormyridae within Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues, among the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed plate on the roof. Reaching over 30 cm, it grows noticeably larger than several of its Hippopotamyrus relatives, and like every mormyrid it carries a tail-mounted electric organ that fires a weak, species-specific pulse discharge for reading and signalling through the dim, sediment-laden water of its home rivers. It is essentially unknown as an aquarium fish, and much of its biology beyond size and range remains sparsely documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Hippopotamyrus pictus was described by the Baltic-German naturalist Johannes Heinrich Marcusen in 1864. It belongs to the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the most ancient living branches of the teleost fishes. Mormyridae is an exclusively African radiation that, together with the related Gymnarchidae, makes up the weakly electric Mormyriformes; despite a superficial resemblance in some distantly related fish, it is entirely unrelated to the electric knifefishes (Gymnotiformes) of South America, a case of pure convergent evolution on two separate continents.

The parenthetical authorship, (Marcusen, 1864), signals that the species was originally described in a different genus, as was standard practice for African mormyrids described in the mid-19th century, before later revisions split the old, broadly defined genus Mormyrus into many narrower genera — including Hippopotamyrus — on the basis of skull and electric-organ characters. The genus name Hippopotamyrus combines Greek hippopotamos, "river horse" (hippopotamus), with -myrus, a suffix borrowed from Mormyrus, the type genus of the family. The epithet pictus is Latin for "painted" or "patterned", from the verb pingere, "to paint", describing the mottled or spotted colouration that distinguishes the species from plainer congeners.

Morphology

Hippopotamyrus pictus is a comparatively large mormyrid, reaching about 12 in in standard length and roughly 100 g in weight according to FishBase — noticeably bigger than several other Hippopotamyrus species kept or studied in the hobby, some of which top out around 4.7–5.9 in. The body follows the typical mormyrid plan: elongate and laterally compressed, with a small, largely terminal mouth, a single dorsal fin set well back over a long anal fin, and a deeply forked caudal fin. FishBase records 29–39 soft rays in the dorsal fin and 30–36 in the anal fin, a fin-ray range that helps separate it from similar-looking congeners.

As in every mormyrid, an electric organ built from modified tail-muscle tissue sits in the caudal peduncle and produces a continuous, low-voltage, species- and often individually distinctive pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD). The EOD is read back by electroreceptors spread across the skin, letting the fish electrolocate — building a moving picture of obstacles, prey and open water in dark, sediment-stained rivers — and signal to other members of its species. Mormyrids as a family carry among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any vertebrate, with an enlarged cerebellum devoted largely to processing this electrosensory picture, a trait H. pictus shares as a matter of family-wide anatomy even though its own brain has not been separately studied.

Habitat

Hippopotamyrus pictus is known from the Sahelo-Sudanian ichthyofaunal province of West Africa, recorded from the Niger, Benue, Volta, Mono and Sassandra river systems and the Lake Chad basin, with records also noted from part of the Nile basin; countries of occurrence include Ghana, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Cameroon, Togo and Ivory Coast. It is a demersal freshwater fish, living close to the riverbed rather than in open water, across a broad band of tropical West African drainages rather than being confined to a single river.

FishBase gives a preferred temperature range of roughly 72–75 °F for the species, but no pH or hardness figures have been published specifically for it. Like other mormyrids of the region it almost certainly favours the warm, often turbid or sediment-laden river water typical of Sahelo-Sudanian drainages — exactly the low-visibility conditions an electric sense is built to read — but without a dedicated water-chemistry study, that remains an inference from habitat rather than a measured fact.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study has been published for Hippopotamyrus pictus, but its general biology matches the mormyrid family pattern: a benthic, largely nocturnal invertebrate feeder that uses electrolocation rather than eyesight to find prey buried in sand or mud, taking small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans from the substrate.

Where Hippopotamyrus species are kept, aquarium sources report they take live or frozen invertebrate foods readily — bloodworm and brine shrimp in particular — once settled, generally feeding most actively after the lights go out. No aquarium feeding record exists specifically for H. pictus, so this is a reasonable expectation drawn from the wider genus rather than a documented fact for this species.

Mating

Mormyrid courtship is built around the electric organ discharge: in better-studied genera, males use their EOD waveform and pulse pattern in courtship displays to signal species identity and readiness to spawn, and females appear to select mates partly on EOD characteristics. Whether Hippopotamyrus pictus follows this pattern has not been documented directly — it is inferred from the wider mormyrid family rather than observed in this species specifically.

West African Sahelo-Sudanian rivers are strongly seasonal, with river level and floodplain extent driven by the annual rains, and mormyrids in this region are generally understood to be seasonal, flood-triggered spawners whose reproduction tracks the rise in water level. No details of pairing, courtship duration or spawning site have been recorded for H. pictus itself.

Breeding

Breeding biology in Hippopotamyrus pictus is essentially undocumented and, as in mormyrids generally, is rarely if ever achieved in captivity. The species is a seasonal spawner in the wild, but the mechanics of that spawning — pairing behaviour, egg site, incubation time — have not been worked out for this or most other mormyrids, and no aquarium spawning of H. pictus has been reported.

Some mormyrids are thought to scatter eggs among submerged plants or root mats with little further parental involvement, and a few may guard a clutch briefly, but without direct observation it would be guesswork to assign either pattern to H. pictus specifically. The honest summary is that its breeding biology remains a research gap rather than a documented fact, and prospective keepers should not expect to reproduce it.

In the aquarium

Hippopotamyrus pictus is rarely, if ever, encountered in the aquarium trade, and general Hippopotamyrus husbandry guidance in the hobby literature is written around smaller congeners reaching 4.7–5.9 in — a fish approaching 11.8 in standard length needs considerably more swimming room than that guidance implies, and prospective keepers should size a tank to the species' real maximum rather than to its smaller relatives. Where mormyrids of this type are kept at all, the baseline requirements are consistent: a soft sandy or muddy substrate rather than gravel, which can injure the sensitive skin and chin as the fish forages; dim lighting, since these are shy, largely nocturnal fish that stress under bright light; and dense cover from planting, caves or driftwood to retreat into during the day.

Mormyrids as a family are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to many medications — copper-based treatments in particular — so any hypothetical care calls for pristine, stable water and conservative, mormyrid-safe dosing if treatment is ever needed. They are also often intolerant of their own kind and of boisterous or aggressive tankmates, doing best alone or in a carefully managed group with plenty of visual cover to break up sightlines. None of this has been specifically tested on H. pictus, which should be treated as a species with essentially no aquarium track record rather than one to which general mormyrid advice is known to transfer perfectly.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Hippopotamyrus pictus as Least Concern, an assessment dated to the 2022 Red List cycle. No CITES listing applies to the species. Its occurrence across multiple, geographically separate river systems — from the Niger and Volta basins through Lake Chad to the Sassandra in Ivory Coast — is consistent with a wide-ranging, resilient distribution rather than a narrow, vulnerable endemic.

That reassuring status should still be read against the wider pressures facing West African Sahelo-Sudanian rivers generally, including damming, agricultural runoff, sedimentation and water abstraction, which affect river fish communities across the region even where an individual species' current assessment remains favourable. It is not currently the target of any dedicated fishery or aquarium trade that would draw down wild numbers.
