Marcusenius sanagaensis is a little-known weakly electric mormyrid endemic to the Sanaga River basin of Cameroon, in West-Central Africa. Like every member of the elephantnose family it belongs to the bonytongues, order Osteoglossiformes — among the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching pad on the roof, and scattered across Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and Australasia by deep evolutionary time. It carries the family's signature electric organ at the base of the tail, firing a pulsed, species-specific discharge used to electrolocate food and read its surroundings in water too murky for eyesight to do the job, powered by one of the largest brain-to-body ratios of any fish. A modest-sized Marcusenius reaching under 17 cm, it is confined to a single river system and assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List on the strength of that restricted range — a specialist's fish about which surprisingly little has been published, even by the standards of an already poorly documented genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius sanagaensis was described in 1997 by G. Boden, Guy G. Teugels and Carl D. Hopkins. Teugels was a Belgian ichthyologist associated with the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren who specialised in the taxonomy of African freshwater fishes, and Hopkins is an American neuroethologist at Cornell University known for his research into mormyrid electric organ discharges and electrocommunication — a fitting pairing of taxonomic and electrophysiological expertise for a genus that is notoriously difficult to sort out by eye alone. The species sits in the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: one of the most ancient surviving lineages of ray-finned fish, its name referring to a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching toothed pad on the roof.

The genus Marcusenius is a large, mostly sub-Saharan African group honouring the naturalist Alfred Marcusen, who worked on African electric fishes; its many species are notoriously hard to separate on external appearance and are more reliably distinguished, where studied, by the waveform of their electric-organ discharge (EOD) than by anatomy. The species epithet sanagaensis is a Latinised place name built with the suffix -ensis, "of" or "belonging to", attached to the Sanaga — the river system to which this species is endemic. Like a number of its Marcusenius relatives, M. sanagaensis appears to be a narrow single-basin endemic rather than a wide-ranging species, and confident identification likely rests on locality and, ultimately, EOD signature rather than on visual characters alone.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum size of 6.6 in standard length (SL) for Marcusenius sanagaensis — total length would run somewhat greater but is not separately reported — making it a modest-sized member of the genus, well short of the larger Marcusenius that can exceed 11.8 in. As in other mormyrids, the body is laterally compressed and elongated, with a small, low-set mouth suited to picking invertebrates from the substrate, a long-based dorsal fin set opposite a similarly elongated anal fin, and a deeply forked tail.

At the base of the tail sits the electric organ, a modified muscle mass that fires the species' own pulse-type discharge many times a second; as in other mormyrids, the brain is disproportionately large for a fish of this size, with an oversized, richly folded cerebellum dedicated to processing the constant electrosensory stream — the physical basis for the family's reputation as unusually intelligent, "thinking" fish. No species-specific description of colour pattern is available in the sources consulted here; the plain silvery-grey to olive-brown livery typical of the genus, suited to camouflage in murky river water rather than display, is a reasonable general expectation but is not confirmed for this species specifically.

Habitat

Marcusenius sanagaensis is endemic to the Sanaga River basin of Cameroon, West-Central Africa — the country's longest river system, and one it does not appear to range beyond. FishBase describes its habitat as "raceways" with sandy bottoms in the larger channels of the river, roughly 164–656 ft wide, set within a landscape mixing tree savannah and semi-tropical forest — the transitional Guinea-savanna-to-forest country the Sanaga crosses as it runs from the Adamawa highlands down toward the coast.

FishBase classes the species as tropical freshwater and demersal, a bottom-associated fish of the riverbed rather than the open water column, consistent with a mormyrid that reads a sandy, current-swept channel by electrolocation. Precise temperature and pH data specific to M. sanagaensis are not given in the sources consulted; the restricted, single-basin range recorded here is also the basis of the species' Vulnerable conservation status, discussed below.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study of Marcusenius sanagaensis has been located in the sources consulted here. As in other mormyrids, it can reasonably be expected to be a nocturnal, bottom-oriented forager that sweeps its self-generated electric field over the sandy river substrate FishBase records for this species, using electrolocation to detect small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — hidden in the sand and among debris rather than relying on eyesight in the dark or turbid water mormyrids typically inhabit.

No aquarium feeding data are documented for this species, since it does not appear to have an established presence in the ornamental trade; general mormyrid husbandry practice — offering live or frozen invertebrate foods after dark, when these fish are naturally most active — is the closest available guidance rather than anything confirmed for M. sanagaensis itself.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour in Marcusenius sanagaensis have not been documented, and FishBase notes that even the size or age at which the species reaches maturity is unrecorded. What is established for the wider family is that the electric organ discharge doubles as a communication signal as well as a sensory one — EOD waveform and pulse rate are thought to play a role in courtship and in species and individual recognition, letting a fish identify a suitable mate in water where vision does little good.

Wild mormyrid reproduction in general is understood to be seasonal, often cued to the rise of floodwaters during the rains. Whether M. sanagaensis follows that same pattern in the Sanaga system has not been confirmed in the sources available here; this should be read as inference from the wider genus rather than an observation specific to this species.

Breeding

FishBase records breeding in Marcusenius sanagaensis as poorly known, and this species has no established captive-breeding history — consistent with mormyrids generally, which are seasonal, flood-triggered spawners in the wild and are only rarely, if ever, bred under aquarium conditions. Nest-building, fertilisation, incubation and any parental role in this species have simply not been worked out.

Prospective keepers should treat this as a species without a breeding protocol to draw on: no reliable sexing method, no documented spawning trigger, and essentially no aquarium-trade or hobbyist record to consult. It is a fish to be appreciated as a display specimen rather than approached as a breeding project.

In the aquarium

Detailed aquarium-keeping experience with Marcusenius sanagaensis specifically is not documented in the sources consulted, and whether the species has any real presence in the ornamental trade is unclear. General guidance for Marcusenius and mormyrids of similar size does exist, however: both FishBase and hobby literature on elephantnose care agree that these are social fish that should not be kept alone, and recommend a tank of at least 39.4 in in length as a minimum footing for a group.

As with mormyrids generally, water quality matters more than most community fish: they are sensitive to copper-based medications and to many standard treatments, so any medicating should be conservative and copper-free, and they are best introduced to a mature, stable, well-cycled tank rather than a freshly set-up one. Dim lighting and plenty of cover — driftwood, roots and structure to break sightlines — suit their largely nocturnal, electrosensory lifestyle far better than a bright, bare setup. Given how little is documented about this particular species, anyone who does encounter it should approach it as a specialist proposition, applying sound general mormyrid husbandry rather than species-specific experience that simply does not yet exist.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius sanagaensis as Vulnerable, an assessment dated 16 February 2009 under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) — shorthand for a species with a restricted geographic range experiencing an inferred continuing decline in the extent or quality of its habitat. That assessment tracks directly from the species' biology: it is known only from the Sanaga River basin, a single Cameroonian drainage, which leaves it inherently more exposed to localised pressure than a species spread across several separate river systems would be.

The Sanaga basin, like much of West-Central Africa, faces the familiar pressures on its rivers and surrounding tree-savannah and forest landscape — deforestation, agricultural conversion, and the potential for further hydropower development on a river already dammed at several points for power generation. Because M. sanagaensis does not appear to be a significant part of the aquarium trade, hobby collection is not considered a driver of its Vulnerable status; habitat condition within its single home basin is the relevant long-term concern.
