Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius thomasi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1916, originally as Gnathonemus thomasi, from material collected in Upper Guinea. It has since been reassigned to the genus Marcusenius and sits in the family Mormyridae, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving branches of the teleost fishes, named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a matching pad on the roof. Osteoglossiforms are a scattered, deep-time radiation found today on four continents — South American arowanas and arapaima, African mormyrids and butterflyfish, Southeast Asian arowanas and Australasian saratoga — and M. thomasi belongs to the African branch, the electric-sensing mormyrids.
The genus name Marcusenius, erected in the nineteenth century by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill, honors Johann Marcusen, whose early anatomical studies of African mormyrid fishes helped establish the group. The species epithet thomasi honors Northcote W. Thomas (1868–1936), the British anthropologist and colonial ethnographer whose West African fieldwork produced the holotype that Boulenger described. As in many mormyrids, external anatomy varies little between related species, and modern workers increasingly lean on the fish's own signature — its electric organ discharge (EOD) waveform — to confirm identifications the eye alone cannot always settle.
Morphology
Marcusenius thomasi has the compact, moderately deep body typical of many Marcusenius species: a short, blunt head without the elongated chin appendage that makes its relative Gnathonemus petersii so recognisable, and a small, weak, near-toothless mouth. FishBase records specimens to about 7.9 in standard length, a modest size even by the standards of a family whose larger members can reach 11.8–15.7 in or more. Coloration is a plain brown, darkening toward the head, with darker markings on the fins — practical camouflage for tannin-stained water rather than a fish built to be looked at.
As with every mormyrid, its most important organ is not visible from the outside. An electric organ near the base of the tail produces a weak, continuous, species-specific pulse — the electric organ discharge, or EOD — that the fish reads through electroreceptors covering its skin. In the near-total darkness of turbid, tannin-stained African rivers this electric sense substitutes for eyesight, letting the fish map its surroundings, locate prey, and recognise other mormyrids by their EOD signature. Mormyrids are also known among fish for the brain built to process that sense: an enlarged cerebellum gives the family one of the highest brain-to-body-mass ratios of any fish, a genuine oddity that has earned them the nickname "thinking fish" among neuroscientists as well as aquarists.
Habitat
Marcusenius thomasi is a West African endemic, recorded from Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea-Bissau, roughly between 12°N and 6°N along the Upper Guinean coast. FishBase lists it as a freshwater, demersal species occurring in rivers, intermittent rivers and freshwater lakes across that range, rather than as a single-river specialist.
Its home water is the dim, tannin-stained, sediment-laden river and floodplain habitat typical of West African forest drainages — warm, in the region of 75–82 °F, and generally soft and on the slightly acidic-to-neutral side rather than mineral-hard. Precise field pH and hardness measurements for this particular species are not documented, but the setting matches the low-visibility water that mormyrid electrolocation evolved to read.
Feeding
M. thomasi is an insectivore/omnivore with a FishBase trophic level around 2.5 — a small-prey specialist rather than a broad scavenger. Its mouth is weak and carries few teeth, built for picking soft invertebrates off or out of the substrate rather than crushing anything hard-shelled.
Where it has been kept, it takes mosquito larvae, bloodworm, white worms, black worms, Daphnia, Tubifex and Cyclops, offered live or frozen. Feeding is largely a nocturnal, close-range affair: the fish leans on its electric sense as much as its eyes once darkness falls, so food offered after lights-out is taken far more readily than food dropped into a brightly lit tank.
Mating
Very little is documented specifically for Marcusenius thomasi's courtship and spawning behaviour — no source consulted here records field or captive observations of this species pairing or spawning. What is understood about mormyrids in general is that the electric organ discharge plays a central role in courtship and species recognition: individuals are thought to modulate their EOD pattern to signal readiness or identify a suitable partner of their own species, a system that substitutes for the visual or acoustic courtship displays used by many other fish groups.
Beyond that, the details for this species are simply unknown. Data on wild spawning triggers, site selection and pair behaviour in M. thomasi are sparse to non-existent, and nothing should be assumed about them beyond what is documented for mormyrids as a family.
Breeding
Marcusenius thomasi has no documented captive breeding. Mormyrids as a family are essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby — even Gnathonemus petersii, by far the most commonly kept species, has only a handful of credible captive-breeding reports — and this obscure, rarely traded West African species has no such record at all.
What little is known about wild mormyrid reproduction points to seasonal, flood-triggered spawning tied to the rains, with some species thought to scatter eggs among flooded vegetation and offer no further parental care, but the specifics for M. thomasi are not documented. Anyone encountering fry or juveniles of this species should assume they were wild-collected rather than captive-bred.
In the aquarium
Marcusenius thomasi is an uncommon, specialist's fish rather than a mainstream aquarium species — most mormyrids seen in the trade are Gnathonemus petersii, and M. thomasi turns up only occasionally, if at all, under its own name. Anyone taking one on should treat it as a dedicated project rather than an impulse buy for a general community tank.
Care follows the family playbook. A minimum tank around 39.4 in is recommended, kept dim, softly filtered, and never medicated with copper-based treatments, to which mormyrids are notably sensitive. Water should be soft to moderately hard and slightly acidic to neutral, warm (75–82 °F), with subdued lighting and plenty of cover — driftwood, leaf litter and floating plants — that echoes the tannin-stained rivers it comes from. It should not be kept alone: mormyrids are social but can spar with their own kind in cramped quarters, so a proper group needs generous swimming space and enough hiding spots that a subordinate fish can get out of sight. Tankmates should be peaceful, unhurried fish that won't out-compete a nocturnal, weak-mouthed feeder for food.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Marcusenius thomasi as Least Concern, an assessment reflected in the January 2020 FishBase record cited here. It is not currently considered at risk of extinction across its West African range.
That range is nonetheless under real regional pressure: FishBase flags mining and deforestation as threats within its West African watersheds, both of which degrade water quality and river habitat even for species not yet individually classed as threatened. As with many small, poorly studied West African freshwater fish, the Least Concern rating reflects an absence of documented decline more than an abundance of population data, and the trajectory of its habitat is worth watching even though the species itself is not currently a conservation priority.
